    RPGs and preservation

Everything with a copyright has a copy (or several copies) deposited with the appropriate national libraries - you sell a text in Scotland and a copy goes to the National Library.

    The Cephus Engine verses Traveller

Then there is the issue of discontinued licences. Pelgrane press has lost the licence for Dying Earth - it is no longer in their interest to expend money and time defending products they can no longer make money from. Paranoia has several versions and (except the current licence) the owners of a...

    The Cephus Engine verses Traveller

As a side note, I think several companies turn a blind eye to unofficial sourcs of the core books knowing that a pdf that gets players generates hard sales laer. Plus once people like the core they will buy supplements. Who protects what is interesting. Does the company protect the earlier...

    Why D&D?

Some nights the humour will rule, some nights the grim intensity comes upon the players. The trick is being sympathetic, moving the story and having fun. You CAN NOT play Dying Earth (Pelgrane Press) straight - you will temp and be tempted. We are allways "knowing" - my current Heroic Greece...

    Why D&D?

Because it was the first and biggest. Not my style of game now and I keep converting DnD players to other games.

    Rules Discussion

Think Starship Troopers as the book was written - Fascist. Not dragging real politics into this place but you "can" have some damn nasty cultures in an RPG. Ringworld RPG has some very nasty subtexts about gender, trading and subservience.

    The Food and Drink Thread

Today was the "end of lockdown meal treat" - Fish and Chips from Anstruther Fish Bar - bliss.

Interesting new ideas for world building?

Ringworld is always a good one for Sci-Fi, a Dyson Sphere would be mind bogglingly BIG. I dream of building an air ring - see the Integral Trees by L Niven - you can have a torus of air around a stellar object - strange mechanics but fun. Tempted to try an "aquatic" world set on a Jovian moon...

    What are you watching?

Midway - in pieces because I cannot stand the ghastly over hyping, ridiculous combat scenes, the TERRIBLE plotting. It;s a lesson in TROPE before history.

What are the most useful pieces of GM-ing advice you've gotten?

They think that? well it's true now!

Just started a Heroic Greece game - the Classical ans Archaic peroiods have a great vibe, full pantheons and mythical beings.

    OSR and new mechanics

To me OSR is playing a bit simpler, a bit more cinematic and a LOT more have fun. Just now using a new mechanic with HARP Fantasy set in Heroic Greece - but it ain't the mechanics, it's the style and the people.

What are y'all up to these days?

Covid shut down face to face - so the new (three sessions in) HARP Fantasy using Discord is go - all new to HARP but we are having a good time - meanwhile I'm trying to learn Campaign Cartographer to get maps onto Roll20 for the upcoming night attack.
