So, just in practical terms when designing, what does skipping rolling imply?
For example, it's clear that both GMs and players like rolling ( gambling is fun, clacketyclackclack is fun).
It's also clear that there is a bunch of stuff where people are unhappy rolling (under certain...
Hmm. Crooked Dice also make some Simian Minions miniatures that would be good for PCs/NPCs to go with those 3D printed ones form Etsy.
There are a couple of other makers of Not-PotA minis too, if I can find them I will post names of companies.
Battle Valor Games
Eureka miniatures ( but in a...
Joking aside, -Borg may be a fine game design.
It's really just the amount it is suggested that gets me. (Also, IIRC, I don't like the art style associated with the original).
I'm a bit sad about a few different games that don't seem to get mention much any more.
Black Hack is one. I really like most variations I've seen on it. It combines my love of B/X with some innovations from other old games, along with a couple new twists (or at least ones I wasn't familiar...
I mean, it seems like the real perfect pairing is Apes versus Alpha Complex! :hehe:
No, wait...that actually is a good idea (runs off and starts scribbling notes...)
That sounds very similar to how I ran CoC in earlier editions.
The only big difference was the use of the Resistance chart, but that is very similar to your point about opposed rolls anyway.
Heh, I like PbtA stuff, but I have that same, weird, gut level negative reaction to all things -Borg these days, for similar reasons.
Ofc, I recognize I'm being unfair. I haven't even looked at the game properly. I'm just entirely sick of hearing about it.
That's fair.
So how do we define and name that subcategory that actually gets used in gaming, rather than the entirety of pulp?
A catchy term with some boundaries might prevent this recurring conversation in a gaming context.
@Baulderstone ;
Yeah, I was thinking more of the heroic pulp type for sure. That kind of thing you referenced I mentally compartmentalize as grist for Gangbusters.
I never got around to those, but given the convo in this thread, I gotta ask:
How often does the main character get gunned down by mooks?
(I mean, if he's a bit like The Phantom, a persona that gets passed along as the previous person gets killed, that would actually be kind a cool)
I agree with part of this. I too hate bad substitutes.
I get around it by starting with the minis and working outward from them . Of course, it’s also an excuse to buy new minis that fill in some particular gap for an adventure or scenario.
Mostly I’m just glad I dodged electronic games of all varieties with a small, brief exception for a couple versions of Civilization in the 90s.
OTOH, my (non-GW) minis is collection is absurd and I wish it was bigger still and I did briefly get into CCGs in the early 90s as well.
Financially...
GW is my go to example of something I have a Love/Hate relationship with.
As critical as I can be of them, there is some part of it all I will always have fondness for.
I doubt I will ever jump back into any of their games at this point though, or buy any of their current minis ( yes I will...
