I've brought up this topic before but I thought it might be worth starting a thread about.
Simulating Physics: people often use the term "physics" so I've kept it - though it's awkward. What I'm referring to here is that rules that attempt to model actual proceses of reality. So for example...
What is there in the way of setting or supplement books that detail in depth a single alien planet?
I'm not talking so much about planets for interstellar planet space opera games, although if a planet is detailed enough to run a whole campaign on I'd be interested.
Blue Planet leaps to mind...
I'm preparing to run City of Lies using the more recent Legends of the Five rings game and I've noticed a few things in the system that I've encountered a few times recently, in particular in 2d20 games but also as a more general feature of more recent games.
1) Universal conflict systems - are...
The thread on the scope of D&D discusses Duels a bit and I thought it might be worth it's own thread.
Are duels an underused possibility of rpgs? Do they need a different system then 'regular' combat? Would a game feel unfinished if it's only combat system was a duelling system?
What are the...
Ok. I'm basically putting the finishing touches on a rules hack at the moment and it raises the above question.
There seem to be two main paradigms in traditional rpgs.
1) Dextery/Agility/Coordination or whatever you call it is used for attack rolls and Strength is used for damage. Often in...
Mass combat systems seem like something a lot of games try to do and often struggle with.
What games, (are there any?) really succeed at this?
Often they seem to run into problems with being too complex, or too time consuming, or just too detached from everything that is a regular part of the...
MOD NOTE: Tangent moved from the Morale Thread
I think the way heavy armour slows you down is valid. I don't think it's so much of an issue in 5e unless you're using the variant encumbrance rule.
It's one of infuriating things about modern D&D, the way that the whole game is written around...
In the Dracula Dossider by Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan and Ken Hite, the pcs investigate the involvement of British Intelligence with Dracula. This involves the PCs coming across the book Dracula Unredacted, which is an original version of Dracula, with annotations from at least 3 different people...
I've written up some new exhaustion mechanics for 5E because I find the existing exhaustion system too punishing. I want exhaustion to be something players feel, but to be not so bad that they turtle up and refuse to continue.
So here it is, please tell me what you think.
Exhaustion Mechanics...
By which I mean "mechanical" character growth - not character development?
The skill trees thread got me thinking.
D&D started the trend for exponential character growth and most of the big games out there on the market seem to follow suit to some degree. (Call of Cthulhu and...
I've decided I hate the way games resolve perception.
The way I see it rolling perception runs into these problems.
1) It costs resources (if stat or skill - or god forbid both) for something that just doesn't do that much for the player - it avoids a bad situation (surprise) that is often not...
We are running a donation drive this month to help offset the costs of running the Pub and to avoid running intrusive ads in the future. If you would like to help out please visit this thread for more details. Thank you!
