I know players that threatened to quit the game if an animal companion dies so I don’t doubt they would quit if they lost a limb. Not everyone wants the same experience and that is A-OK with me.
I am one of those players that enjoys the possibility of being maimed and having to overcome that but in the situation you described the new limb has opened up all kinds of great possibilities so it isn’t like You just did a quick retcon. I see no problem with it.
@AsenRG my experience with their games is solely with the Macho Women with Guns line, TimeLords, SpaceTime and WarpWorld.

You aren’t wrong but I just accept it as setting up how tough he is, I wanted a popcorn flick and mostly got one, I didn’t expect gritty realism. I definitely can understand how that would take you out of the film if you had different expectations though.

i think most of use consider the afterward in OD&D as giving the referee freedom to do as they wish by telling them to “decide how you would like it to be, and then just make it that way!”
