Character a Day 2023: Day 9: Dishonored

Name: Lyndon Ward Description: Broad of shoulder with chiseled features, Lyndon Ward appears the powerful hero. His black hair chaotically frames his face, his grey eyes piercing and always scanning for threats. His demeanor, however, is more befitting where he grew up- quick to violence and quick to make decisions- a moment's pause can be the difference between life and death. Where others might turn to violence at the drop of the hat, he'd already move before the hat was even touched.
Background: Lyndon Ward grew up in a poor, working class family. His father was a whaler- not a member of the gang, but one of those that went to sea for months at a time in order to harvest the resources those great sad beasts provide. His mother raised him alone for the most part, supporting them with the charms she possessed, with his father appearing sporadically to impose his alcoholic authority on the household. The last time he arrived, his son was alreayd out in the streets, his wife dead of consumption. With his father's bulk and his mother's hustle, he found himself rising in the ranks of the Howlers, his reputation for merciless brutality and swiftness of violence removing as many obstacles as his own deadly skills.
Personal Truths: Mercilessly brutal fighter who is quick to violence, Orphan in all but name seeking to never rely on another again

Strix is a ghost mutant, a mutant who appears human (although genetic scanners will still detect her mutations). She served as a watchman at a Purist outpost, helping mutants escape, until she was forced to undergo a 'routine' genetic scan by a rival. She fled into the badlands, eventually uniting with some she helped escape, and they have banded together for protection.

Comments:

Random character generation in this game is insane.

I used the 'Experienced Player' character type table, since it has all possible character types ('Beginning Player' doesn't include "Mutant, Freakish Horror," and 'Master Player' doesn't include "Clone, Comfort" and "Bioreplica, Pleasure.")

This is my second character for this challenge today; even though I was determined to let the dice fall where they may, my first character was simply not going to make it. I got a comfort clone, bonkers Appearance and poor-to-average stats in all the rest, 'slave-whore' caste, with only one skill - Erotic Arts (just what it sounds like), no weapon or survival skills at all. (Oddly, this is a possible result for an 'Experienced Player' but not a 'Master Player!') Anyway, that character was obviously not going to survive past the first encounter in a mutant-infested post-apocalyptic wasteland, and that first encounter could only be unbearably creepy. This one is workable, but all of the skills came from being a Watchman caste.

A few years ago a friend tried to run a campaign. I rolled up a combat bioreplica, basically Roy Batty from Blade Runner. Another player got a crocodile-man with a brutal bite (although not great at swimming). The third player got literally a basic human dirt farmer with a shovel.

The game is an absolute passion project. It is not fire-and-forget - the core book was published back in 2011, and the creator is still pumping out adventures and supplements. I wish I loved my family as much as the author loves his game.

Jules is a typical junior college student except he has the power to animate and transmute inanimate objects. His powers manifested at puberty starting with the ability to his GI Joe soldiers. Practice has upped the size and added the ability to alter their shape and chemical makeup. He also gets a vibe from the objects around him when danger is near. He's currently limited to objects under around 220lbs. It remains to be seen whether he will use his powers for personal gain or to aid society. He's basically a good kid so baring some interference I think he'll make the right choice.

Ok, gotta try deadEarth, that just sounded so cute and I found a bundled download.

System :: deadEarth
Version :: 2nd

strength -1, moves 1, resilience 1, age 50, height 72 inches, weight 144 lbs, renown 0, shielding 43%, gender 'who cares', money $800

skills: hilariously running and weight training at 6d6, boxing and brawling at 4d6, all weapon skills but the paired sets at 3d6, a bunch of basic "conscious human" stuff at 3d6, medical doctor at 4d6, a bunch of skill prerequisites at 4d6 but they're all still basically "grew up not locked in a basement and attended at least primary school" stuff.

mutations: boils, good memory, tiny torso, sense magnetic north, regenerate lost limbs in d6 weeks, caffeine addict, drain renown on touch, ONCE swap natural aptitudes with the next player character touched, ONCE gain a bleed to death sickness at 1 HP per day the next time your skin is broken, totally blind but has bat-like sonar and probably the ears too, +25% radiation resist to everyone in 25 feet, KO for d6 days after rolling on the radiation table, cannot perform strenuous tasks for extended periods, geek, get good (reroll 1s) in computer ops, computer programming, math, physics, electronics, broadcasting and you have to make a bemuse skill roll or be incomprehensible to anyone but another geek... too bad we didn't take that skill.

tactics: run the fuck away

Meet... Bobat Fukt, the old creep that survived the bombs in a fallout shelter and speaks only in L33t sP33k. Bat head, blind, sonar, slow, weak, frail, and he makes everyone nearby resistant to radiation as well as being able to do some decent first aid.

batface.jpg

generation
Right, 3 d10s for d100 & d1000, some d6s...
moves, 2d6, 8
resiliency, d6+3, 6
strength, starts at zero (1 is human normal & 3 is max normal human)
age, d100 and a chart... 75 = roll again and subtract d6 radiation manipulations, 56...
age = 56 & modifiers... -9 moves, 1310+(d6 x 100=100)= 1410 skill points, -5 strength, -7 resiliency, 4-1=3d6 radiations...

I'm thinking this sounds like "dead"

... and "every year after 40 apply a -1 modifier to either resiliency, strength, or moves"... So another -16 assorted on top of the current hits? Gonna wait on applying this.

height, 48+6d6 inches, 72 = 6 feet tall
weight, roll 5d6 and multiply by height on a table... 13 yields... double height, thus 144 lbs.
height and weight impact stats, checking the table... +2 moves and -1 strength
max carry weight is 30+(str x 10) and currently stands at... negative 30 pounds... Yeah...
choose a gender? who the fuck cares at this point?
there are 100 skills, roll d% six times and then it's 50/50 to mark it + or -, 93 is +ballista, 60 is -medic, 64 is -mining, 35 is -electronics, 67 is -pharmacology, 20 is +construction
roll 1d6 and add or subtract to just about anything, six... let's take that off of age so we get age 50
age = 50 & modifiers... -5 moves, 960+(d6 x 100=100)= 1060 skill points, -1 strength, -3 resiliency, 3-1=2d6 radiations, and that theoretical -10 assortment
skill points 2d6 x 10, 50 more for 1100 total
you can buy rolls on the radiation tables for 10 skill points each or buy skills, see the skill chapter for more info
renown starts at zero
money is 3d6 x 10, $800... and you have to haggle with the GM for gear?... I guess we'll look at the gear section at some point.
radiations, roll'em! 7 rads gives us...
939: boils... randomize d6 (5) body parts, unsightly but harmless (r.foot, torso, neck, torso, l.bicep)
355: memory is a natural ability... I suspect we check the skills section for this
331: regenerate lost limbs in d6 weeks, OK that's nice
415: sense magnetic north, OK
716: caffeine addict, gain +d6 moves for d6 hours after consumption and -d6 influence if you haven't had any in the last 6 hours... so functionally a permanent -d6 influence then?
249: random body part shrinks by d6 x 100 percent, 500%, torso... wtf?
018: rite of blasphemy, sacrifice 1 renown or d6 guile to reduce a touched target's renown by... one I guess?

OK, gotta check some body parts, choose some skills, maybe consider equipment, then see what the final stats are.

Skills. OK, natural abilities you reroll 1s or 6s if you're good or bad at something, but you only reroll once so you keep 1s & 6s on the second roll. And the first 10 SP get you base 3d6, then 20 more gets you to 4d6 and double cost each additional d6. And some of these are basic things you'd expect to be base stats or derived values in other games.
From 1100...
60sp: Boxing(30) 4d6, +1 resiliency, requires Brawling(30) 4d6.
70sp: Haggle(10) 3d6 requires Appraise(30) 4d6 requires Math(30) 4d6 rr1 and Streetwise`
120sp: Medical Doctor(30) 4d6 requires Medic(30) 4d6 rr6 requires Biology(30) 4d6 and First Aid(30) 4d6.
150sp: Running 6d6, +2 moves, adds 1 move per even dice skill level 10+20+40+80
150sp: Weight training 6d6, +2 strength, like running but for strength
10sp: Memory 3d6
10sp: Charisma 3d6
10sp: Climbing 3d6
10sp: Drive non-motorized 3d6 (includes skates)
10sp: Escape 3d6
10sp: Hide 3d6 requires Senses
10sp: Jury-Rig 3d6
10sp: Memory 3d6 rr1
10sp: Navigate 3d6
70sp: Lie(10) 3d6 requires Guile (30) 4d6 and Reason` and Streetwise(30) 4d6 requires Intuition`
100sp: Resolve(10) 3d6 requires Running and Reason(30) 4d6 requires Intuition(30) 4d6 requires Senses(30) 4d6
10sp: Search 3d6 requires senses
10sp: Stealth 3d6
10sp: Swimming 3d6
10sp: WS Ballista 3d6 rr1 (rockets, grenade launchers, & recoil less rifles)
60sp: WS... six others not including paired weapons 3d6
...totals 910... current stats at str 1, move 5, resiliency 4... -10 for age over 40 gives us... str -2, move 1, resiliency 1, max carry 10 lbs.

Fuck this shit. We're buying ten rolls on the radiation tables.
855: fruits of labor, add +1 str, resil, or moves for each skill over 6d6... which is none as that costs 310 skill points, we could dump medical and haggle but, pffft.
611: modulation, swap your natural abilities and inabilities with the next player you come in contact with... I think that should be character but...
086: lethal injection, next time skin pierced and blood exposed to air get sick and lose one hit point a day until dead... maybe the doctor skill can help?
710: proton cross-section... roll d6, 2, oh, modifies shielding rating, low roll gains 2d6, +10%
043: radiation resist, +2d6 shielding, +8%
637: bat blind, total light blind but gain bat-like sonar, windows are a bitch
895: security blanket, you and everyone within 25 feet gets +25% shielding... well they have a reason to keep you alive now.
074: radiation numbness, after any roll for rads for d6 days -d6 moves and -2d6 senses... basically a d6 days of KO after taking any rads for this bugger
156: winded, cannot perform strenuous tasks for extended periods, no rules text
423: geek, get good (reroll 1s) in computer ops, computer programming, math, physics, electronics, broadcasting and you have to make a bemuse roll or be incomprehensible to anyone but another geek... too bad we didn't take that skill.

And now since that took like two and a half hours, the 30ths one

30). Ms. Scarlet or Ms. Xīnghóng

All this set of characters are based on the "anime" of The Neo Frontiers. The full anime series Neo Frontiers is not supposed to focus on any particular character but follows several characters throughout the course of the series. Although each one gets to be a star in one episode some just continue to follow their life. They are all interlinked around the high school "stage" characters. They will be at the level of when they first appear in the "anime".

Name: Ms. Scarlet or Ms. Xīnghóng
Core Trait: Esper Agent of The Neo Frontiers Era (Series 1)

Ms. Scarlet (which is the translation of Ms. Xinghong) is an OGA agent on Mr. Black's team. In series 1 we mostly see her smirking at Mr. Blue and some quick martial arts moves. Since we saw the traditional fingers on the temple, we can assume she is an Esper. (In OVA and series 2, we see her as a retrocog and the ability to see through illusions (which could be some form of anti-psi).

In the OVA and Series 2, we see much more of her. She and Black are in Executive Ministry as covers I guess. She is responsible for The Big Reveal on Camera of the Alien Conspiracy in the OVA.

Description: She is a woman of athletic build, a little of the tall side. I assume Chinese descent (I would place her from HK). She usually wears a stylish black suit with a red tie (because the animators seemed to color code the OGA agents.) She has shoulder-length hair black hair worn loose most of the time. To tie into the color coding/ code names, she wore a red cheongsam at the end of the series. Note: She wears a long anime styled red wig to protect her identity for much of the OVA.

Note: If you want to use the Martial Arts Rules 13.0, you can. Feel free to modify her and Sakura.

BTW, what are the MAR 13.0 like:grin:?
1) The Martial Arts is a separate Area of Expression (skill). Unlike combative which generalizes to hitting anyone with anything or just being aggressive, MA is limited to the traits attached to it. Note: Martial Arts are not limited to unarmed combat. You can apply appropriate weapon traits to a MA (hence "Karate Weapons". Certain MA's like Fencing or Kyudo-jitsu, or Power Sword are only armed (and you must take a trait to use them unarmed).

2) Take the MA AoE, you get one School or Art for free. Additional Schools/Arts can be taken as traits. (Take the Frankenstyle trait and you can combine traits from more than one school you have access to.)

3) Each trait you normally take is a "stance or strategy" done by that art... represented by three traits that cascade out of the primary trait. Now you can have several strategies based on a given art. (You normally can use only one stance or strategy at a time, but for a penalty, you can use more than one.)

4) Cascading Traits are usually tertiary traits - that define "special abilities"/ Martial Actions, but they could be secondary traits giving conditions for a bonus (fighting a given style, on your back, on loose terrain, etc), or a primary (+1 Attack, +1 Defend, +1 Dodge). Most tertiary traits define unique moves (like throw or nerve strike), combination actions (grab/throw), or effect bonuses to certain actions, and such... depending on the art/ style. (Thus there is a list of what is appropriate for a given Art.)

So a Strategy for Tai Kickboxing would be Block/Knee strike (combine two actions as one), Block (bonus to the block), Bonus Damage (Knee Strike has bonus damage if you can pull it off, this adds more to it). So having that tactic, you are waiting for defensive action to counterattack. If you don't want to wait, you could just throw a knee strike and get just bonus damage).

If you want to see some write ups, I have some on RPG.Net... scroll through this thread.

1) The Martial Arts is a separate Area of Expression. Unlike combat which generalizes to hitting anyone with anything or just being aggressive, MA is limited to the traits attached to it. Note: Martial Arts are not limited to unarmed combat. You can apply appropriate weapons traits to a MA. Certain MA's like Fencing or Kyudo-jitsu, or Power Sword.

2) Taking the MA AoE once and you get one School or Art for free. Additional Schools/Arts can be taken as traits. (Take the Frankenstyle trait and you can combine traits from more than one school you have access to.)

Some of it reminds me of GURPS.

So, wait, let me see... if you have the tertiary trait for Muay Thai, you could act at a penalty for employing them both at a time, but you'd get block and knee strike as one action, and the knee strike would have a bonus damage?
But if you have the Frankenstein trait, you could combine your supposed skills in Savate and Jiu Jitsu, and after you throw an opponent with Grab/Throw as one action, you could get a bonus kick while he's flying towards the ground, as part of the same action?

You should look at Martial Hero/ Ninja Hero. That and Bushido were the main inspirations.

I assume you have read the basics already?

If you want to see a martial arts character, here is Guppy from last year.

Correction: If you have several strategies of Muay Thai you could use them, with a penalty for mixing strategies. But that has advantages as it gives you more options (but you have to balance which ones you will use in an impulse to avoid excessive penalties).

Using the listed strategy, you would be waiting for the counter-strike action for the devastating knee strike, Or you could just throw a Knee Strike (and get extra damage) Or you could just opt to block at a bonus. Depends on your situation.

And Yes. Franken-style would allow you to combine two different arts. So you could - on a given impulse - activate both - and do the grab/throw move (as one action) and then do a devastating kick- what we in America call a Mule Kick - low rear kick to get them when down - (power blow) from Savate (as one action) - you can take more than one action in an impulse/ turn. The more you do, the lower your initiative next impulse (if it drops below 0, you can initiate no action). And also Franken-Style would let you take a strategy trait of doing that as one strategy (which is a good strategy).

If we want to discuss this more, maybe we should import this to the martial arts thread?

Is that a Hero supplement? I never got into Hero...seemed redundant with GURPS being my main game for a while.

OK:thumbsup:.

I thought that's what I said as well? Combining the two for bonus actions and bonus damage in exchange for a higher penalty.

Thanks, so it's roughly as I'd expect it.

No need in my book. I'm just mildly curious:thumbsup:.

Nobody expected him to excel like he has. These days he works off book, doing the kind of shit nobody knows about. The crew he finds himself on now is unusual. Hardly anyone even knows how to shoot a gun. But it's good fun, and all that matters.

Backstory: Lt. Barrow (callsign "Whisper") grew up in South Dakota, about as far as one can get from the ocean, yet wound up in the Navy anyway. He was fascinated as a child by the B1-B jets he saw flying overhead from the Air Force base near the city where he lived, and decided early on that he was going to fly a jet too someday. Eventually, he made his way into the Navy, a commission, and flight school, becoming a Hornet pilot. Barrow is known for his cerebral and methodical approach to problems, which a bit of a departure from the aggressive hotshot fighter jock stereotype, but his skill as a pilot is unquestioned.

System :: The System
Version :: E1

Well, here we are at the end of the 2023 challenge. The last character
for this month was rolled up in an obscure freebie called The System,
which bills itself as a universal RPG suitable for all settings and time periods.

It's well-organized and seems balanced. As far as universal systems with 30-page
rulebooks go, a fair comparison would be GURPS Lite but, compared to that
The System seems both overcomplicated and strangely empty. Ten attributes
(plus another eleven derived stats) is too many; a page and a half of skills is too few.

Anyway, here's my character:

Sam Wilford Overton is a night watchman at the small town of Boggy Marsh.
He's reasonably competent at his job and cares a lot about the town and
its people. Off-duty he's often to be found playing darts and sinking pints
at the only pub in town. He's generally fairly level-headed but can be
manipulated into doing silly things by saying, "Hey Sam, I bet you can't..."

Truths

The God of Pride is terrific to behold.

Looking upon the god summons emotions within any mortal in their presence by spending 1 Fragment to extend their aura for the scene. The player chooses whether their god emits a fear or awe effect when they select this Truth. The god is surrounded in a soft light of love and beauty, one truly awe-inspiring and often connected to their Dominion. A god of spring would appear flushed with health with leaves in their hair, while a god of war would stand proud and draw out feelings of patriotism from onlookers. Any mortals who look at the god in this form automatically receive a Convinced 1 Condition per minute they remain in the god’s presence, making their words much easier to accept. Other beings with a Spark receive a Simple (1) Discipline + Intuition resistance check.

The God of Pride has the natural tools to get the job done.

Several gods of renown possess multiple arms, legs and even heads, and so does the modern god with this Truth. By spending 1 Fragment, extra appendages grow from the god’s body, granting certain bonuses. The god sprouts two additional arms from their sides, granting them a +1 Crafts bonus and enhanced combat ability. They can choose one of the following two options each Round of Battle: Gain +2 Fighting to attack or parry attacks, or they may attack their target twice with no penalty.

False pride withers in The God of Pride's Presence.

Simply being around the god lowers everyone’s adrenaline and urges to fight or cause chaos. This Truth lowers the Initiative of everyone besides the god themselves within Near Range by -2, and any attempts to use Influence for intimidation purposes suffer a -1 penalty since everyone is less aggressive.

Blessings

Just Ignore Me: Independent contractors know how to work within others’ spaces, leaving no trace of themselves behind beyond the results of their labor. Gain +1 Stealth to cover the god’s tracks.

Community Leader: The Companion is not only part of the community, but is happy to help them because they are always there for the other members. They can get the first Lead Follow-up per Session from a Group Bond for free (they still must pay for other follow-ups after the first).

Soothing Aura: Something about the Emotional god’s presence calms the people around them. They receive the Soothing Aura Truth for free.

Benefits - Coffers: The Theology has opened their funding to the god, granting +1 Wealth and +1 level for Relics.

Curses

That House: Every independent contractor has a House that sticks in their mind as a place of impossible horror: sticky carpet, the unseen hissing animals, the odd smell. Gain +1 Pantheon Die when an encounter reminds the god of That House and causes them to freeze up in the memory.

Loyal to a Fault: They are undyingly loyal, but sometimes loyalty to one may betray the loyalty to another. Gain 1 Pantheon Die when they must make a choice between loyalties, losing something in the process.

Overcome with Emotion. Gain 1 Pantheon Die if the god’s Emotional Dominion surges through someone else in the scene, and this causes issues.

Curse - Many Over the Few: Gain 1 Pantheon Die when taking on a task given by a superior that, while good for the Theology, conflicts with the character’s individual or pantheon goals. For Elders, this would apply for a questionable task given by an equal.

Other Entitlements:

Theology Rank 1: Initiate. An Initiate is still relatively new to the concept of divinity but is growing their influence within their Theology. They are the most numerous member type in any Theology, spending most of their time upholding their particular ideals and taking action, often with their Theology’s funding. They may even have caught the eye of somebody who feels they have potential.

Influence: Being a prominent member within a Theology provides power over initiates, whether through adoration or fear. The character receives a +1 Influence per Rank they have over other gods in the same Theology. For example, a god with Rank 3 would gain +2 Influence against a god with Rank 1.

Token of Trust: While there are responsibilities with the position, being a respected member of a Theology can also allow them access to power untold. In times of need, they can request the use of a Relic with a Level equal to or lower than their Theology Rank level by making an Influence + Theology Rank roll, with the Difficulty set at the requested Relic’s level. One should be careful of what they demand. If they return the Relic unharmed, then all is good, but if it’s destroyed or compromised, their Rank lowers by -1 Level instantly.

The Cornocopia - Provides pub snacks whenever somebody is hungry

Background

On meeting him, some other Gods are surprised to find out that Harry is a God of Pride. Those Gods are foolish. There's more to pride than bluster and boasting. The pride Harry represents is that of a job well done, of raising your family as well you can, of doing the right thing. It's the kind of pride that doesn't need external validation.

To be fair, confusion round Harry's membership of the New Imperium is more understandable. He certainly doesn't dress like a member of the aristocracy. He doesn't hold himself over the mortals where he lives, let alone other Gods. He's a normal working class bloke. A skilled tradesman. Married with two kids, one of whom works for him as an apprentice (they don't know about his divinity which he regrets, but bad things happen to family members that know in this setting). He makes a good living and would make more money if it wasn't for his habit of doing plumbing work for those going through hard times at a discount or even free. He likes a pint or six down his local, the football (West Ham if you were wondering) and does the National Lottery every week. Nothing like a King at all.

But if you spend some time around him, you start to notice little things. The way he knows the name of everyone in his neighbourhood and they all stop to greet him as he passes. The quiet respect that he's greeted with, from the local newsagent to the kids hanging round on the street corner. The way that "Harry says..." is considered a clinching argument in neighbourhood disputes.

And you realise Harry isn't a King. He's subconsciously following a much older archetype. Harry is the tribal chieftain, first among equals. He rules over his neighbourhood not because of right of birth or through force, but because they choose to follow him.

At this point most Gods outside his pantheon get a bit nervous and try and politely try and get Harry to pay attention to someone else's territory.

Notes

I wanted to make a God of Pride a bit different than the stereotype and I'm really pleased with how Harry turned out. If I ever run Part Time Gods he's a definite NPC.

Character a Day 2023: Day 10: Mork Borg

This entry will be different - I'm using a character generator to make the character, then trying to fit it together afterwards.

Name: Aartem Kytsev
Class: Gutterborn Scum
HP: 4/4
Omens: 2 (d2)

Background

As a child, Aartem grew up kicked and beaten around the kitchens of an inn in Schleswig- he didn't know this was because he was a byblow of a noblelady sold to the inn keep. He kept him in clothes and food, and used him for tasks, but never showed any manner of family inclination towards Aartem. Because of this he never saw an honest days' work as a real option, and as he became older abandoned his chores regularly to make more money than his even regular chumps around the inn made in a week of work with a fast blade and a dark alley.

He's both arrogant because he's never been caught, and worried that one day his luck will run out, though it hasn't so far. He's covered himself in (for some) blasphemous tattoos to show just how much he doesn't care what others think more than any belief. As for he himself, he believes in no one, other than the skull of one of his friends he killed when he thought he was betraying Artem. He cleaned it himself, and carries it with him, still calling it Siggy. He tells it everything- he can't trust anyone but the dead.

Mr. Dead is a professional Hit Horse. You're lucky if you even see him coming. Usually he just appears next to you blasting away with his gamma hooves. Then as you burn from radiation he fades out of existence. The few survivors have said a pitch black horse was that only thing they saw before being overcome with radiation.

Mr. Dead is a lovely tan horse adept at blending in with his non mutated brethren. Watching. Waiting for his moment to strike.

Day 30

Today I'm trying to build the same superhero character in a couple of different systems, to see if it's any easier in one or the other.

Meet ANGELIC!

angelic.jpg
(source)

Eric Connally led a mundane life. He got up, went to his tech support job, and went home. He'd get together sometimes with friends from high school for board games, and spent at least one night a week volunteering (alternating between the animal shelter and the soup kitchen), but spent most nights at home with his cat. When a glowing being appeared at the foot of his bed one night and offered him power to make more of a difference, he said yes, certain it was a dream. A blast of pain and a sudden transformation told him it wasn't.

He could fly. He could heal, and sense strong emotions, and even block bullets with his wings. But most of all he could fly. Sure, he looked different, but what did that matter compared to being able to help more people, and compared to just being able to fly? Maybe the being was some sort of angel, or maybe Eric just transforms into this form because it's what he subconsciously thinks a powerful magical helper should look like. And if he concentrated he could always change back to Eric. Eric soon discovered that if his adrenaline spiked - fear, excitement - he'd instinctively transform, but he's spending more and more time as Angelic, making what he believes to be a bigger positive difference in the world and just experiencing the simple joy of flying.

Concept: Angelic's attack is a wing buffet, just a melee attack that's more damaging than his good-but-still-human strength. His defence is parrying with his wings, and he can use them to block an attack aimed at a person nearby, putting himself and his wings between the attack and the target. Movement is obviously flight, fast but not supersonic or anything. For utility, there's an emotion sense that lets him feel when people need help, and his healing touch. So a support role, but not hopefully not useless as a combatant.

System One: Supers
Version: Revised

Resistances:

Advantages/Disadvantages:
Alter Ego 1D
Accidental Transformation -1D
Mental Hindrance: Honour Bound (minor) -1D
Mental Hindrance: Low Self Esteem (minor) -1D

Competency Dice: 2

Total: 25D (Super-Hero level)

Not sure how competent the character will be in play, but the scores look comparable to sample characters. He was built on the top of the range for Super-Hero characters (20-25D; Pulp Hero level would be 10-15D, while Global Guardian level would be 30-35D).

The Sharing boost for armor lets him use his armor power for one other person, representing how he only has so much wingspan. Flight at 3D lets him go up to 100 mph, which seems reasonable. Healing works by restoring 1D in a Resistance for every six points rolled, so 3D should usually restore at least 1D. Supersenses is more just putting points in for a plot device, since it's pretty low to be used as an actual detection.

---------------

System Two: BASH!
Edition: Ultimate

Brawn: 2
Agility: 3
Mind: 2

Hits: 100

Super Senses 1 (1)

Skills: Computers 2

Advantages: Instant Change, Quick Thinking
Disadvantages: Normal, Involuntary Change

Mental Malfunction: I must prove I'm worthy of the power given me.

This was built on 25 points for a Street-Level hero; the numbers in parentheses are the point costs for the powers. Again, seems pretty close to what I had in mind. While Supers distinguishes between Healing as an active power usable on yourself or others separate from Regeneration, BASH!'s healing is more like regeneration, with a boost needed to heal others. The scores seem along the lines of sample characters again.

Not sure yet how either version would work in actual play, but character creation was very similar. Both use a relatively small range band for scores, so the creation point pool was easy.

Well I considered calling it in on the last day with a Lasers & Feelings character but...

Normally this far into it I'm getting burned out on character creation. This year is different. I still have like 20 systems I want to make characters for. Time is the only challenge.

I didn't so much get burned out (maybe a little), as much as got sidetracked and lost momentum trying to read through Mythras. Wasn't really feeling it (never been a huge fan of BRP, though, there's couple things I liked about Mythras and definitely want to farm its magic for ideas; esp. Animism) and didn't want to force myself to slog through character creation when I could be doing more productive stuff. So I decided to focus on real life or working on my own system when I did game related stuff instead.

Definitely appreciate finally trying out the Character Creation challenge this year, cuz it led me to check out systems I didn't try before. Savage Worlds in particular turned out to be a huge source of inspiration (gonna try to sell my group on it next time we get a chance to play), and also got a lot from looking into other systems as well—even Mythras, despite not getting around finishing the one character I started to make (was gonna be a Shaman, of course ).

Day 31: HeroQuest: Glorantha

At last, we come to the 31st character (from me) for this challenge. I found myself with less time overall for this year's challenge, so I'm feeling pretty darn good right now about making it through, even if some of those characters were rushed or a bit thin. The truth is those characters that had little or no backstory much more closely resemble characters in my games. There was more than one time when I noted the irony of me sitting there and writing a backstory for characters in this challenge when I'd ordinarily not do so. I'm firmly in the camp of "the character's story is what happens at the table," but for whatever reason I often feel like leaving a character that's little more than stats isn't in the spirit of the challenge. So, I find that the challenge itself is more about pressing through my comfort zone than anything else.

It's been, as always, fun!

--------------------
Temperamental 7W
Love of mead 17

Background/Concept:
He is the only surviving child of Sharvor the Fletcher. One by one his seven siblings died from either disease, battle or just dumb bad luck. But Kervost has never been ill, and he always returns from battle or the hunt with little more than a scratch on him. While he can be temperamental and prone to violence, as all Orlanthi men are known to be, his generally boisterous and sometimes overly cheerful nature makes some within the clan suspect him of being a tad touched. Many in the clan whisper behind his back that Kervost is marked by the gods, destined for great things.

They may just be right.

Aside:
The character was made pretty much with Tormund Giantsbane, as seen in the GoT tv show in mind. He was made last night explicitly for day 31, so that I could end with one of my favorite systems for one of my favorite settings. HeroQuest / QuestWords is the reason I can't bring myself to run RuneQuest anymore. Well, insofar as Glorantha is concerned anyway.

Blue Kestrel Clan is an Orlanthi clan of my own making for my games. They're a community of highland mountain folk with a strong emphasis on hunting, fishing (in highland lakes, rivers and ponds) and agriculture. In more or less that order. They're known to have a slightly higher number of Yinkin devotees than is typical of other Orlanthi clans. Their hunters commonly utilize trained kestrels as hunting companions, whether for taking down small prey outright or for spotting and tracking larger game.

Over the years they've been relocated a few times as my mental picture of Glorantha shifts and changes, but they've come to settle, more or less finally, in the southern Indigo Mountains. This puts them a little further away than most Sartarites. This suites me fine, as I like that the distance removes them somewhat from the central conflicts, and their distance allows for certain cultural oddities and peculiarities to show up (basically, player characters), setting the Blue Kestrels apart in more ways than one.

Busy day today so I’ll just end with one of my all time favorite games, and luckily one I have gotten to the virtual table more often lately!

31) Kendal Grant

All this set of characters are based on the "anime" of The Neo Frontiers. The full anime series Neo Frontiers is not supposed to focus on any particular character but follows several characters throughout the course of the series. Although each one gets to be a star in one episode some just continue to follow their life. They are all interlinked around the high school "stage" characters. They will be at the level of when they first appear in the "anime".

Well not all of them

Project Blackbird is based on the artwork of Project Eagle from Blackbird Interactive. It is a Mars Colony workup. I was working on Neo Frontiers when I encounter these, posted them up on a site, and there was a huge reaction. It is fairly independent of Neo Frontiers. You can use it as a background for another setting. (Though it can casually be used for the Neo Frontier of Mars). The idea was to have another chronicle (cops/robbers, sci-fi, drama, espionage/ rebels, etc) just set on a Mars Town/ City.

So technically this is in the early Neo Frontiers Era, but it is separate.

Name: Kendal Grant
Core Trait: Human Surveyor of Blackbird Era Mars (Neo Frontier option)
Colonist Late Gold/ Early Silver

Helium started as a mining camp habitat. Three things going for it: Mountain, Sunshine, and Closed Mine.

The camp was built on a set of "mountains" east of both Bradbury and Wells. It seemed a good vein and had a "trail/ pass" that easily led down for ore trucks - Rust Riders all - to bring things to Bradbury. The mountain position and altitude had one other advantage, it protected the camp from most of the dust storms that passed through.

The location of the camp had a south facing cliff and a wide arc view. You could see both the sunrise and the sunset here... and to be subjective... it was quite spectacular. The sunlight was on the camp almost all the day most of the year. This made solar production useful (though almost all habitat clusters relied on a pebble nuclear system as their primary). It also made green housing easier.

While the Rust Riders did make regular runs, the supply purchases were biting into the margin. So farm domes and windows were installed. Then more personnel were brought in to provide goods and food "locally". Miners started to bring their families over from Bradbury or from Earth.

The primary vein ran unexpectedly empty. This made Vale Resource Acquisition contemplate closing down the camp. The locals (and the Mars Habitat Corporation) started to buy elements from Vale. Surveyors managed to find nearby mineral veins and resources, enough to keep Vale active in the area - and most of the hab people employed.

Helium is slowly becoming a "resort" of sorts for Martians. It had excellent sunsets/ rises, a good amount of water (enough to spare for an actual pool!), green open spaces, and resources. Hilton bought into the idea. Now between mining, food production, and Mar's first "resort", Helium is doing okay.

Kendal has been a hired surveyor for Vale and other companies since the beginning. Mapping is just part of the job, finding things "boots on the ground" made a surveyor valuable. Kendal has regular work. This also allows an indulgence in a hobby.

Kendal is a life miner, one of the dreamers who hope to find native life on Mars (or access to the deep seas underground). Most of this life will be found in caves, so spelunking is useful. Also, caves are good for Habitat construction and resource extraction. So it could be a win-win.

As more and more of Mars is being properly surveyed and explored, there is less and less need for surveyors. A lot of surveyors have gone home. Not Kendal. Kendal is a lifer... a martian... Earth is no longer home.

Kendal is based out of Helium and has been since it was three hab cans. It is still a town, but it has the makings of a real city. It just needs to grow into its potential. It is practically civilized. Now Ellie's Cafe Rice Cakes (filled with goodness) are Kendal's primary breakfast. There are general and craft stores to get good gear (and personal things). There are bars and people to interact with (given the tiny "resort" it is more than the same old 6200 faces).

Kendal has taken to bringing Sun out on the job. Sun is a local teenager, a true martian born and raised. She's getting hands-on experience on how to be a surveyor and some life skills along the way. She has started taking some of the classes online. Who knows she may even go to Earth for a brief time just to learn. But Sun will be one of the first New Surveyors on Mars.

Note: Helium is on the east of Bradbury and Wells. During the Six Year's War (and the occasional Vesper Conflict), it saw no action from Chinese forces or from any of the "so called rebels" that were active in The South.

I just Google search and steal images of the web. I know that makes me a bad person, I should probably attribute the artist when possible, but normally I grab stuff from movies and tv. I don’t feel bad about using those images but if I grab from deviant art or something I have a twinge of conscience but usually get over it. Usually.

As it's not for profit, I just steal them off the internet. When I'm doing something for pay, I have stock art and also put creative commons in the search, but for games for personal use, it's not like it's going to generate money for anyone.

AI art, to me, still resides firmly in the uncanny valley.

Pvvvb... I'd have to trawl back through to check my posts but the two I remember...

LaForce was collage of internet open source bits with some generic image manipulation on the lightning to blend in nicely.

The deadEarth one was from the "dream by wombo" (A.I. free & unlimited but not great), with a screwed up image manipulation. I realized I should have just taken one of the zardoz thread images, swapped in a bat head, deleted most of the torso, stretched the legs up to pelvis the shoulders, and stuck that on a generic nuked city pic.

Pinterest tends to have a ton of decent art for character portraits, lots of it from actual RPGs, or fan art. Artstation is also a good one, but I usually end up there from Pinterest, since the site links images from wherever they're posted from. A few of the pics I've used have also been screencaps from games with custom character creation. But Pinterest tends to be my go to site.

Day 31

System: Cyberpunk 2020
Version: 2.01 (with the Wildside supplement)
Publisher: R. Talsorian Games Inc.

System Notes: Well, last one for 2023, so I figured I'd end with a classic and one of my favorites. I used the Wildside supplement for an alternate Fixer template and one of the three expanded Streetdeal/contacts systems it includes (I picked the medium-complexity one, where you get points based on the Streetdeal level to buy extra rolls with various groups or sources of information). I also went with random attribute rolls rather than the point pool method.

Name: Harlan Takahashi
Role: Fixer (Smuggler)
Age: 23

Intelligence 7
Reflexes 5
Cool 8
Technical Ability 3
Luck 4
Attractiveness 5
Movement Allowance 7 (Run 21m, Running Leap 5m)

Handgun +4
Hide/Evasion +6
Language (Spanish +3, Japanese +2)

Cyberware: None

Armor: Light Armor Jacket
Weapons: Militech Arms Avenger Pistol with 50 Rounds
Equipment: Cell Phone (1 Month of Service), Generic Chic Clothing, 1-Room Apartment in Moderate Zone (1 Month of Rent and Utilities), 35 Nuyen

Contacts (one extra Streetdeal roll per level):
Cyberware Black Marketers 1
Night City Street Gangs 1
Night City Yakuza 2
Police Information 1
Weapons Black Marketers 1

Special: can make a Family roll (as the Nomad role skill) at +2 once per month due to earning a Nomad family’s trust in the past (from lifepath generation)

Backstory: Harlan grew up as an orphan in a corporate arcology, his parents having disappeared under mysterious circumstances. When he reached adolescence, he ran away to Night City, learning how to live by wits on the streets. He realized that a quick tongue and a way with people could often help one live longer than being good in a fight, as there’s always someone bigger and stronger out there, and also that moving unnoticed among the movers and shakers could benefit one’s longevity as well. He learned how to become a smuggler, moving merchandise in and out of Night City, and establishing a network of contacts along the way. His preferred suppliers and customers are the various Nomad families that live in the hinterlands, but he’s up for anything if the money is good. Unlike many in Night CIty, though, Harlan eschews installing cyberware in himself (though he will certainly deal in it), as he feels it will make him lose the human touch that a successful smuggler and intermediary often needs.

"I can get you where you want to go. For a price, of course. Everyone has to keep an eye on the future, right?"

Although born in the depths of the city, Iyodrian grew up listening raptly to her parents' tales of life in the wild. (Little did she know that her parents had never ventured outside Marienburg and were just passing off stereotypical stories of "Elf life" as their own experiences.) As soon as she could, she left home for a life on the road as an outrider. She quickly discovered, however, that it was nothing like her parents' stories.

Comments:
Every detail was randomly rolled down to the name, and the character coming out the end was a fairly reasonable, bog-standard fantasy RPG staple, basically an elf ranger, instead of some twisted ratcatcher. Sure, the insanity and crippling injuries can follow in play, but right now at least this is almost boring! I took the Elf talent Aethyric Attunement in case I got a spellcasting career (which would have made the name Swiftbow wonderfully inappropriate), but oh well.

#32 February 1 Christopher Bell

All my recent characters have been based on the "anime" of The Neo Frontiers. The full anime series Neo Frontiers is not supposed to focus on any particular character but follows several characters throughout the course of the series. They will be at the level of when they first appear in the "anime".

Well not all of them.

Name: Christopher Bell
Core Trait: Human Rust Rider of Blackbird Era Mars (Neo Frontier Option)

He served his country when there was a country. A bomb went off and killed off his civilian life. Mustering out and having nothing left on Earth, he joined up with Vale Resource Acquisitions and went to Mars. (He had nothing to lose and it was the first wave - so a high chance of dying.) He became more than a truck driver connecting habit cans. He became a Rider of the Rust, a Rust Rider. Rust Riders are the folk heroes of Mars. (Much like The CB Truckers of the 70s, romanticized.) They help people out, getting needed loads to desperate habitats. They risk their lives for just a tank of gas. They rescue folk. They give lifts. They help when the corps are tough. They help hold the outposts together. Sure, most of the time it is a standard haul from a mine to Bradbury. But the few times it is not, it becomes a local legend. If the story is good, it becomes a planetary legend.
Nobody is more legendary than Bell. He has been "the local legend" since he first did "The Triangle" (A dangerous bit of rust/ red soil between major outposts) before anyone else. He has moved needed oxygen during dust storms. He has made sure Christmas Post is delivered. He has put more kilometers on more six wheelers than anyone else. In fact, stories about Bell have become the basis for the general Rust Rider mythos.
