Day 16: Barbarians of Lemuria

He's a pirate. First mate to captain "Reaper" Royston. He grew up poor and miserable, and he's taken to a life of taking what he wants and doing as he pleases to make his life less miserable. He loves sea to his very bones. He revels in the thrill of piracy, the chasing and taking down of prey. And he loves prey of another sort: pretty redheads. Whether they're married makes no difference. Thus, he is sometimes called Byram the Sea Dog, and the Scourge of the Reds.

System :: Mythras
Version :: Imperative 3rd Edition

Given the popularity of Mythras here on the Pub I thought I'd see what all the fuss is about. I generated a gentleman thief named Malachi. Picking attributes and skills was smooth, and I like the way some skills take contributions from multiple attributes. The wheels sort of fell off a bit with weapon proficiency, which seemed vague and badly organized to me. Still, one of the more logical chargens I've done so far.

Backstory: Kyle Fitzallen was born in 1963. His parents, both university professors, surrounded him with books and the trappings of academia in his youth, and strongly encouraged his scholastic studies. Even as a child, he soon displayed a knack for getting people to do what he wanted by persuasion rather than threats. He went on to study Russian in college, and was recruited by the CIA after he graduated due to his mastery of the language (good enough to pass for a native in many cases). After fourteen years, Kyle was starting to think about leaving for the civilian world when the War broke out, which soon put an end to those plans. As he was already used to operating in Europe, it was a foregone conclusion that he would be sent there, working in support of NATO to collect intel and perform missions. Although the situation has deteriorated significantly from when he was sent into the field, Kyle still thinks the war can be won, and is willing to do whatever he feels is necessary to help bring about its end.

Character: 17
System: UnderWorld

Name: Old Meg
Breed: Homeless
Traits:Resilent, Perceptive, Veteran
Skills: Contacts (Surface), Scrounging, Contacts (Underworld), Negotiate, Savvy, Survival
Secondary Skills: Carousing, Observation, Stealth

Special Abilities: The Homeless possess the unique ability to use UpWorld technology at any level of the UnderWorld, regardless of that area’s Radiance Count, or the Radiance Level of the technology being used. Homeless can take guns, laptops, cellphones, and other modern accoutrements down into the deepest levels of the UnderWorld, and they will continue to function.

Equipment: Shopping trolley of various items (including UpWorld goods), Shiv, Lots of layers (counts as padded armour)

Charms:

Begging Hat: The Begging Hat is a beat-up old hat with a charm placed upon it that attracts money. The user lays it down, and throws a threecoin Head Count. The hat will magically attract small amounts of money, subway tokens, and even food if the throw garners two successes or more. (Minimum Radiance: 1)

Pack o’ Smokes: This charm summons transportation. The user takes a regular pack of cigarettes, and taps them three times on the heel of his hand. The user then takes out a cigarette and lights it. Transportation of some form will arrive before the end of the cigarette, if the user can make three successes on a three-coin Head Count. (Minimum Radiance: 1)

Soup Stone: This is a charm that will allow the user to create a pot of soup by dropping any stone into a pot of boiling water. Its successful use will feed one person for every heads result on a three-coin throw. (Minimum Radiance: 1)

Background: The UpWorlders, and not a few UnderWorlders, assume that Old Meg is quite mad. And she may be. She certainly makes for an eccentric sight as she pushes her shopping trolley along mumbling to herself and wearing enough old coats to survive the Antartic. The shrewder of the UnderWorlders recognise that mad and stupid are not the same thing. The sharpest among them note that for a "madwoman", Old Meg doesn't half know how to get the best of a trade. And the sharpest of them all (maybe one in a thousand if you're being optimistic) wonder exactly how old Old Meg really is and what she's seen behind those blank eyes. In her most lucid moments Old Meg denies she's anything but what she appears and scoffs at any suggestion of unusually prolonged lifespan. And none would doubt her publically. But still, nobody quite remembers a time when she wasn't there, pushing her trolley along and mumbling to herself.

Day 16

System: Against the Darkmaster
Version: 1

Part of the fun of VsD is the option to randomly create the Big Bad of the campaign! I'm doing that first, to know who my hero will have to strive against.

First is the epithet, three percentile roles to get the [adjective] [noun] of/from [noun] that the Darkmaster is known by.
(d%x3=61, 17, 81) Immortal Champion of Shadow

Next is the Coveted Artifact.
(d%=94) Mirror - those who use it can see the past, present, and future, but the Darkmaster can see them; if the Darkmaster ever sees its reflection, the mirror will shatter and the Darkmaster will be instantly slain.

Next, servants!
(d%x3=10, 14, 74) Lieutenants are Dark Knights, Minions are Dragonspawn, and Spies are Wolves.

Finally, the Dark Place, the Darkmaster's stronghold, also [adjective] [noun] of [noun].
(d%x3=59, 01, 79) Ruined Caves of Obsidian

Obsidian goes well with Shadow, Dark Knights go well with Champion

The free peoples of the Known World are once again threatened by the rise of Ayan Tairn, the Immortal Champion of Shadows. All believed she was defeated in the great war that ended the First Age, but signs show that her agents once more stalk the lands, seeking to gather power to open the gates that will allow her to stride forth once more. And shadows gather again around the Ruined Caves of Obsidian, which were once the shining halls of the Dwarven kingdom of Goldendelve.

I'm going as random as allowed, including Kin and Culture. That will give me two Drive points to start rather than just one!

First is stats, rolling percentile six times against a table to generate a score between -20 and +35. I get: +25, +30, +25, +0, +0, -10.

I'm supposed to assign scores to stats now, but some Kin have stat placement requirements, so I'll see who I am first. Kin is (%=94) Half-Orc, and Culture is (%=90) Hill.

Half-Orcs get a negative modifer to Bearing; I don't want to put my -10 there, but I also don't want to spend a decent positive score there. I'll put my positives into physical stats, put the -10 in Wits, and be big and dumb.

Hill Culture is herders and farmers living in highlands and rugged hills, not prairie folk on gentle rolling hills (that would be Pastoral). They are rough, unsophisticated, and family-focused. That fits with a big, not-so-bright Half-Orc.

I am going with Warrior for a Vocation, of course. I focus on Polearms since I started with a higher skill in that from my Hills background.

Next is Backgrounds; as a Half-Orc I get 5 Background Points to spend, enough for one Major and two Minor Tiers. Given the image I'm going with, I have to spend at least 1 point on a Loyal Companion. I'll put 3 points into Vigilant (Major) so that I can fight normally when surprised, and put the last point into Battle-Hardened (+15 HP and +10 to Max HP for my Kin).

With no wealth, I start with just my basic starting equipment per my Culture: short spear, shield, and leather jerkin, and standard adventuring gear.

Meet AKEGI!

Akegi comes from the Highlands, a harsh and unforgiving land where all in the community must pull together to survive. Her parents were Man and Orc, perhaps an uncommon pair in more civilized environments but not worth a second glance in the Highlands. Her adopted brother was a Stone Troll, found abandoned as an infant by Akegi's parents. Akegi and Valda were close as natural-born siblings, and as Valda grew the rest of the village came to appreciate his strength and good-natured willingness to help. For all the hardship, it was a good enough life.

It ended when the lowlanders came, slavers drawn by rumors of an almost civilized Troll. They fell upon the village, butchering all in their path. Akegi fought but was struck down by a blow to the head that left her bleeding and almost dead. When her wolverine companion finally managed to nuzzle her awake, Akegi saw her village in flames. Most of the adults and some of the children were dead; the tracks said that the survivors had been taken south.

Akegi set out north, following the lowlanders' path until it vanished onto a major road. She began to roam, seeking those who stole her kin, selling her sword to pay her way. One day she chanced upon two mercenaries she had fought beside prior, now facing off against a pack of strange draconic humanoid monsters. Akegi came to their aid, and together the three drove the Dragonkin back.

Akegi learned from her new companions that the creatures served Aran Tairn, the Immortal Champion of Shadows from out of legend, and were out seeking sacrificial warriors to fuel the creation of Dark Nights to serve the Immortal Champion. Akegi realized that the raiders who took her brother were most likely agents working at the behest of Aran Tairn for just such a purpose, and that her brother must have been too enticing a potential recruit.

Akegi set out with her spear and shield, her wolverine companion, and her new allies to put the lie to Aran Tairn's claim to immortality. She would not let Aran Tairn take her brother, or anyone else.

I just wanted to say "OH NOooo!"
Eff yeah. He's for sure some time to flub a drive roll in combat and go sliding. Give him 1500 xp (4-6 sessions) and he can start saying stuff like "You pay the Bill first". Double that and he's a badass. Right now he's a vamped regular soldier type in a pimped ride.

Funny thing. I have a random hero generator. For npc exalt heroes at a moment's notice if I need them. I did a test run, threw a random gen level 3 paragon fighter at an Atlas run by two generic elite soldiers. It was close a few times, until the hero chopped a hole in the cockpit and got inside. That was about a 2k xp post starter character but without backgrounds like a magic sword or a jetpack.

So I decide to make a Hellene...that should be natural when you pick Hellas!
And his name is Todor, because I picked it from the table. "Hellenes generally do not identify themselves with distinct family or last names", as the book says...
Epithet: Bloody-minded Todor.
Also, he's son of Vasilis.
Bloody-minded Todor, son of Vasilis...has a nice ring to it:shade:!

Leadership Ability
Due to their confidence, Hellenes are natural leaders. Hellenes receive a bonus equal to twice their CHA (minimum of +2) to all Command and Diplomacy rolls.
Tyche
Being the favored of the gods, Hellenes are allowed in a small way to enforce their personal will upon the universe. They can force a re-roll of any dice action that affects them directly a number of times a game session equal to their WIL (minimum once per game). The roll need not be made by the Hero and may affect rolls made by the GM or other players when it pertains to the character. The re-roll only affects the Hero and may not manipulate fate for the benefit of others.

Lifepath:
Born in the spring of Hel, on Planting Day, in Argos.
His parents are dead, he was raised by a relative...who was a King, no less!
Wealthy talent, +5 Glory
Family Status says "entire family killed in a great war", meaning he was growing up mostly by himself, apart from maybe a few friends who also lacked extended families.
Well, almost: he's got one younger and one older sibling - but both...worship the ground my character threads on:shock:? OK, here's something I wouldn't have written without a lifepath:grin:!

As a special gift, my character got his father's hoplite sword. I guess it was post mortem, "bring this to my son" gift?
Well, small wonder someone agreed to: Great-Grandparent on father’s was the offspring of a Goddess:tongue:!

Gain 3 more glory, total 8 so far.
Rolling for Divine mark...
The God’s Sigil Upon his Person (+10 Glory and roll again)
18 glory? Cool!
His mark is a Strong Body. I had a Str bonus from chargen already, but 1 more never hurts...

As a kid, my character helped an old hermit on the side of the road. He blessed him and called him a future king. I never saw him again, though.
Favoured by a god...or goddess? I guess that would be Athenia the Seer, his great-great-grandma!

I'll just take a sample Destiny: Slay the Titan who killed my family and claim his wife as my own:devil:!
But if he fails, he just might suffer his Fate: Kill the love of his life...:shade:

His profession: Hoplite. The ward of a King cannot fail to live up to his obligations! And it also makes his Combat Rating equal to his Str.

Advanced Militia Training
Medium Cuirass armor (Hoplite Mesh), Hoplon shield, Spartan infantry spear, Hoplite assault carbine, military clothing
100dm base

His first lifepath was Noble...and he rolled, unsurprisingly (that's the highest-probability roll in this lifepath), Relationship. Probably with a princess. It just might be the reason why his next Lifepath is Legionnaire.
...but the dice said "close friendship with a noble" instead.

Legionnaire (+3 years of age):
Special Event: Defeated an Echidna. Gain +1 in any one combat skill.
...I guess Assault Rifle:grin:?

Another roll on the same lifepath:
Scholarly Pursuits "Was allowed to study for a week inside the temple moon of Delphoi. +1 INT."

Still...
"They tried to get me behind a desk. That's no fame for a Hero! I shall volunteer for combat missions!"

Warrior:
"Great fortune"?
Stopped a war between two poleis and was rewarded by both governments. +4 Glory, and a home on one of the worlds (roll on Planet of Birth chart to see which world).
...Cool. I continue with this lifepath.

...relationship again. Ah, nurse, I'm not sickly, I just want to see you:tongue:!
...the relationship has borne out children? Well, only one. Still, good for 2 Glory more!

So that's 20 glory!

Disadvantages...are mandatory?!?

Relationship: Troubles with Wife's Family: 3
Internal: Overconfidence 1 (hey, I did kill an echydna).
External: Terrible secret 1 (i.e. not that terrible)

Spending 30 points: 10 to get his Combat Rating to +4, 5 more to get his Charisma to 1, 5 points in Pankration, 5 in Evade, 1 in Parry, 4 in Deduce Motives...done.

He's got 7 Hero Points. With 20 Glory, can only use up to +2 per roll.

Heroic Ambitions:
1) to prove that the Naval captain Regios is the betrayer of Sparta
2) to win the heart of the Delphoian priestess Metea
3) to show Achilios the Spartan his own beating heart.

His talent is Danger Sense. He's got Advanced Hoplite Training as well.

Bio: As in all lifepath systems, the bio is in the chargen:tongue:!

Background: It is the year 1890, and to the Institute, she is royalty. Indeed, if rumors of her family's legacy are true, she may be descended from Fionn mac Cumhaill, himself. For this reason, the Institute exists to train her, equip her and aid her in her calling. That calling is to hunt down the creatures of the night and those from beyond and rid our world of them. One day, when the time is right, she will lead them. But for now, she operates as one of the Institute's Demon Hunters (Fomoire), unaware of what her companions suspect.

Notes - The Different Incarnations of Abigail Snow:
Abigail was made using the Pyramids, Pullp & Paragons from Mythras Companion. She's a Pulp tier, point-buy (90 points in attributes) character. Her skills were allocated using the pyramid method. Only skills invested in are shown here.

This was actually the fourth time I'd built Abigail. I always start by rolling a die to predetermine the sex of the character - evens for female, odds for male. Very often, I won't have a firm concept in mind and will play around with different random roll tables to see what shakes out. This time, when that die came up even, my mind went straight to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but in the 1800s. Then I thought of a few other sources of inspiration, such as the Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The Librarian(s), Warehouse 13, The Dark Tower and, initially, King Arther. This last I changed to Fionn mac Cumhaill so I could anchor her in Irish mythology and legend, which is largely a matter of preference, but also tends to make me think of a more otherworldly & supernatural setting.

At any rate, the first system I built her in was Savage Worlds, going straight for the ass-kicking aspect. I absolutely hated the result. My concept was too strong and Savage Worlds far and away too limiting. So, then I thought Fate via Dresden Files. And, frankly, that worked alright. But I'd already done a Fate Accelerated character and, if I'm being totally honest, I kind of hate Fate at this point in my life (I vastly prefer straight Fudge, which I've done twice already for this challenge). So I remained dissatisfied. Then I went to Dark Streets & Darker Secrets. That, too, works after a fashion. But I felt too much of the concept remained abstract and didn't translate in any way to the character sheet. Nothing on the character sheet connected me to her. I could make that work in a real game, but I really wanted something more concrete, and class & level games just weren't going to get me there. After building the character three times, she'd really gotten into my head. At last, I decided to bite the bullet and pull out my Mythras books. I am, finally, pleased with the outcome. I'd be more than happy bringing Abigail into a real Mythras game, and I actually kind of want to play her now.

Day 17 Jonas Howerhousen

All this set of characters are based on the "anime" of The Neo Frontiers. The full anime series Neo Frontier is not supposed to focus on any particular character but follows several characters throughout the course of the series. Although each one gets to be a star in one episode some just continue to follow their life. They are all interlinked around the high school "stage" characters. They will be at the level of when they first appear in the "anime".

Name: Jonas Howerhousen
Core Trait: Human Entrepreneur of the Neo Frontiers Era

Jonas Howerhousen is often on the cover of magazines and print media. His face flickers on screens everywhere. He is a famous scientist and businessman/ entrepreneur. He is an innovator in the Meken Field (mostly for his control systems/ computer work). He has built up Blue Sky up from a small Worx to a worldwide, multizone, conglomerate that does more than make some of the finest Meken and Mekenoids in the world. They build quality vehicles with the same precision and innovation (including spacecraft and prefab spacer domes). He has diversified the conglomerate into every aspect of life - synthetic materials, energy production, food production (and retailing), housing, one of the largest sea-crete makers, and retail consumer products - clothing, bedding, household items.

His heart does seem to be in the right place. He wants to make the world a better place (and make some profit, but not too much - don't want to seem greedy). He has taken the Neo Frontiers concepts to heart and wants to push boundaries. His employees all seem happy and well paid. He funds research. He is funding and working with a variety of companies and departments to improve Blue Sky's reach and Peoples' lives. (Note: he always says People, not Humans. He is pro-biosynthetic citizenship and limitedly pro-meken citizenship.. if AIs could legally exist.)

He does own (or his corporation does) The Blue Sky Arcologies and Malls. (While we only see one and this is "the first", it is implied that others are being built in the same design.) He seems very concerned about pollution.

There will eventually be a Blue Sky everything.

Note: While he is fairly idealistic, not everyone under him is quite so "blue sky". So there will be a degree of corporate shenanigans done by Blue Sky.

He is Kathryn's "Legal Guardian"/ Sponsor. Technically, he is her owner, but he uses more polite terms. She will be the replacement for her mutter, Ms. Puppe in a few years. He is unaware of her growing intelligence. She seems to surprise him with how acute she is. (However, her specialty is people so she is supposed to be "better at people" than most people.) He would not be afraid of it and would try to protect her from the reactionary laws about AI.

System :: Cascade Failure
Version :: Beta 1.2

Cascade Failure is another freebie, built on the standard D&D framework but with some interesting ideas regarding morality, technological development, and railroading. It seems pretty light-weight at first glance but comprehensive, and the rule book looks great. It has the polish of a professional product.

One thing I like about it is that rolls associated with your character's personal ambitions get a bonus, making it easy to keep the game flowing. All the GM needs to do is dangle an ambition-related plot hook in front of the player and watch them go for the juicy bonus, something that'll tempt even the most RP-averse murder hobo.

Cascade Failure is set a few decades after a horrific war that killed 95% of the people in the Galaxy. The survivors, of several species, are picking over the blasted ruins of cities or clinging to life in clapped-out space habitats, trying to salvage enough technology and supplies to survive. It's a cool, if slightly cliched, post-apocalyptic scenario with a lot of potential.

I rolled up a character from a methane-breathing species, with some psionic powers, who's looking to make a name for himself by recovering a powerful pre-War artifact among other things.

Myazaki Akira (Akira is the given name)
Male, Japanese
Concept: High School Student With Occult Leanings
Age 18 (it's pretty important, because at this age he's got to be a student, and it determines his Skill Area points later)
Social Rank 1

This gives me the following derived characteristics:
HIT points 25
Serious Wound Threshold (SWT) 9
Death Threshold -9 (DT; he dies at -10 HP)
Def(ense) 14
ACT 2 (that's # actions)
REAction Speed 4

Due to being 18, Akira has 20 points to spend on skill areas and 15 Specialization points. Mind you, there are 32 skill areas to put points in, with between 3 and 9 skills to put points on (though Contacts actually has 10 separate areas).
Oh, and some areas have Prerequisites, which means you need the prereq at level 3+ (which isn't onerous, and is more like "no making physicists who can't do any math").

So I write first all skill areas I want and then spread points

His Kaiso is 2, I think.

Bio:
Akira is a normal boy who was preparing to apply for university, possibly as an English major. Or psychologist, if he could make it; but he doesn't think he can pass those exams... But that's not likely - unless he can get in on his ability in sports, that is. He gave up Kendo before getting his green belt to focus on Judo, where he is advancing steadily.
All this changed after the Kuro Accident. Not because of the event itself, as far as he knows. But because of Tasha, a gaijin girl that he went out with a few times...
She was brash, attractive, an exchange student, and she seemed to fancy him for some reason he couldn't fathom. He was gathering his confidence to ask her to be his girlfriend, when that drunk driver happened.
The police said it wasn't Aso-san's fault, because he hasn't been driving, it was being driven by an AI. And furthermore, the AI had reacted, supposedly, but the wheels had slipped.
That was a year before the Kuro Accident. Since then, Akira had been considering murder. He knew, he just knew, that it was all a lie, the man had been driving, and Tasha was a victim whose soul was crying for vengeance...
But he also knew that he couldn't kill a man and run away. He wasn't even a bad boy - his life had been a bit sheltered, actually - and he didn't know how to avoid the police detection...other than what he knew from movies, of course - but he also knew the cops had seen the same movies. And he supposed they had better movies, too. Movies he didn't have access to, non-fiction movies from professionals, for professionals.
And him being sent to prison would destroy his mother.
So he was praying to Tasha's spirit asking apologies for not having avenged her...yet.
Seven days after the Kuro Accident, Tasha returned, gave him a kiss - his first kiss, actually - and told him to stop praying. She was going to deal with it.
And she was going to come back for him.

Dammit, now I kinda want to write that story. But it's not going to work for an adventure. Maybe if I make him an NPC.

Note: Kuro is actually a pretty good game with a very decent system. It's a detailed system...but think about it as "your character's learning credits" and it suddenly makes total sense to be as detailed. At least it made sense to me.
The adventures for it, however, are pretty bad. As in, the heaviest railroad/canal barging that I've seen, worse than what White Wolf used to produce.

Backstory: The man named Falcon had a family name once, but it's been years since he's used it. He came from a merchant family in one of Nippon's larger cities, and left home in his mid-teens to join a mercenary band -- first as an errand boy and assistant armorer/bowyer, and a bit later as a warrior. Falcon is no samurai himself, being just a common foot soldier, but he views himself as their equal in skill at arms (if not in the finer courtly arts), and someday he hopes to achieve enough glory and prestige to be allowed into the ranks of the Buke (the military aristocracy) himself, to claim his rightful place in society.

Bio:
Of half Ki-rin descent, Beautiful Rose has been living with her mother on the road ever since she was born - which should have been in the Kingdom of Qi, as far as she can tell. There was a short time when they weren't, but once she grew up, they went back on the road.
They are travelling, never accepted for long, not even among actors and other suspicious people of the Jianghu. But it's easiest to fit in the Jianghu.
Still, she doesn't mind that life much. Her mother has taught her her style, and they're offering their services to people in need of protection, from wives of officials in need of a bodyguard, to simple villagers needing someone to dissuade a roaming gang of thieves. Additionally, they've been selling medicine - and she knew her mom has spotted a client for that when she saw her uncovering her face. For some reason, people who generally disliked "foreigners" (a weird idea for Rose, since she had been born in the Middle Kingdom) tended to believe medicine sold by one was going to contain "barbarian magic".
And it did, in a way - her mom was selling her skill in herbalism, the rudiments of which she had taught Rose.
But nonetheless, they have been travelling to find a murderer. The murderer whose mace had cost her her father, the elusive Snarling Tiger.
They did find him, but when they did, it turned out that her mother had overestimated her style's effectiveness, or underestimated Snarling Tiger's toughness and Iron Shirt skills. Their blows and throws didn't hurt him, and then his companion arrived: a young boy, wielding a sword with delicate, precise movements.
It was him who eviscerated her mom while they were already trying to retreat.
Rose followed her mother's last instruction and ran, while the deathly injured woman found in herself the power to grab the enemy, and held him until her daughter had managed to gain distance...
Now Beautiful Rose has blood vengeance against not one, but two dangerous xia. She fully intends to settle this, but she realizes her skills need a lot of improvement before she could defeat even one of the two men, let alone both of them!

13th Age

There's a 13th Age Megabundle on Bundle of Holding right now, so I'm making this one to see if I want to get it. I was in on the Kickstarter for 13th Age, but have never actually played nor read it. There are some things in the megabundle I don't have (and Pelgrane's library is still down), but there's some things in there I know I don't have. So this will let me know if I want to get it.

Name: Mara Colke
Race: Human
Class: Rogue
Level: 1

Mara Colke was raised in the shadow of her mother. She never names her, for fear of being associated with her legacy- she was a famous performer, welcome in many courts for her beauty, grace, and legendary voice. She plied her trades for the Emperor, gathering secrets for his intelligence arm. But in reality, she was in the bosom of the Prince of Lies, destabilizing the empire with her whispers. This ended as one might expect, though she made sure that Mara was spared her end. Mara grew up resentful for this, and though she was just as skillful as her mother- perhaps more- she eschewed her abilities, going for the more straightforward profession of a common footpad.

Her one unique thing will be that she has a unique otherworldly singing voice, blending her own with the voice of her dead bardic mother.

Yi Long inherited from his father the Flawless Blade of Tang and not much else. Yi Daoliang the Falling Star had been a renowned swordsman, and young warriors travelled from hundreds of li away to challenge him, hoping to win a season under his martial tutelage. The Falling Star, named for the force and brilliance of his cutting strokes, always made sure that his son was always studying and practicing.

Despite the obvious fact that Yi Long had no interest in following in his father's footsteps. He much preferred to spend his time gaming and drinking and chasing pretty faces over relentless training. Yi Long had a natural talent for incorporating movements from dances into his swordplay, developing his own style very different from his father's. Yi Daoliang was personally offended by the lack of efficiency and the emphasis on movement over power in Yi Long's fencing, but took some solace in the fact that at the very least Yi Long was perhaps on the path to becoming a half-decent swordsman.

Yi Daoliang was too proud to tell his son of his illness, and Yi Long was too busy wrapped in someone's arms to notice the signs himself, so his father's death caught Yi Long by surprise. He quickly lost his father's school to a skilled challenger looking to establish her own academy, but he didn't mind that. Soon after he lost his home in a game he was certain he should have won, but he didn't even really mind that. The only problem was that he still needed money to eat and drink, and he was running out of potential partners with whom he could stay.

Yi Long fell into the constabulary by chance. He was gambling in an underground casino, certain that he had figured out how the house was cheating and was ready to turn the tables on them, when the authorities burst in. Thinking quickly, Yi Long immediately denounced the hosts, helped grab the house master, and cooperated fully with the constables by explaining exactly how he had seen the staff cheating at the games when he had innocently wandered in looking for a bite to eat. Stonefist Xia Ke was impressed by Yi Long's martial skill and was ready to overlook his poor lying. Stonefist had been looking for new recruits, and offered a position to Yi Long.

Yi Long became a constable, thinking the work would give him plenty of opportunities to find the latest hot spots and to chat up anyone who caught his eye. He discovered, however, that he truly enjoyed helping people solve problems, and to everyone's surprise became an actual honest cop. Not a particularly savvy detective, mind you, but someone you could rely on. I'm probably going to buy that...but the description sounds sus:shock:!

"In Lot3CF, players take on the role of astronauts who have been abducted by aliens and made to compete in a marital arts tournament aboard a gigantic spacecraft called the Atomodon. Players can have their fighters train in six different Asian martial arts including Judo, Kalaripayattu, Muay Thai, Shaolin Wushu, Taekwondo and Vovinam."

...so why do you need martial arts training to participate in a marital arts tournament? Domestic Violence Not Good:shade:!

Dakons do not consider themselves beastman and rarely mix with other cultures. They progress as clerics but as they are creatures of science instead of faith they are unable to turn dead, instead they are skilled in medicine and can heal 1d3 hit points a day. They have access to clerical spells but they come from single use technological devices that need to be recharged/reset before they can be used again.

This is a Swords & Wizardry Continual Light hack that takes the premise that the Fiend Folio was the original monster manual. As such it leans into science fantasy. You can find it at the Blood of Prokopius blog http://bloodofprokopius.blogspot.com/

Loretta is Abigail Snow's best friend and confidant. She was rolled normally but awarded +1 luck and +1 each hit loc on the basis that she is, basically, a pulp sidekick. If Abigail is Buffy, then Loretta is basically Willow, but with more of a knack for sneaking and burglary. She's also more interested in men, which is a source of slight concern for the Institute.

As before, her skills were allocated on the pyramid from Mythras Companion. It's honestly my preferred method and personal default these days.

Too low of a score on Combat Style, other than that, I like her:thumbsup:!
Yeah. I wrestled with that. It's a consequence of the pyramid style of skill allocation. I'd prioritized the sneaking, misdirection and interpersonal skills and by the time I realized I hadn't raised her combat, all I had left was low scores to allocate. I didn't think it was worth scrapping and starting her over. But If I were to play her for real, I'd be tempted to do just that.

my current character, Brother Maynard, a goblin cloistered cleric. It took me forever to really get an image for him, but now I’m going with a Shinto-esque anime priest with ofuda (the paper talismans). He’s also an investigator and missionary of Nethys. I hadn’t really realized that his lore scribe and cantrip deck really play into the idea of the talismans until very recently

Day 18 Ms. Puppe

All this set of characters are based on the "anime" of The Neo Frontiers. The full anime series Neo Frontiers is not supposed to focus on any particular character but follows several characters throughout the course of the series. Although each one gets to be a star in one episode some just continue to follow their life. They are all interlinked around the high school "stage" characters. They will be at the level of when they first appear in the "anime".

Name: Ms. Puppe
Core Trait : Synth - Mekenoid Assistant of The Neo Frontiers Era

Jonas Howerhousen practices what he preaches. His personal assistant is one of his products (okay the over featured prototype). She has been flawlessly providing service for almost two decades, since he had a hand in building her. Some of her joints are wearing out and she is not as fast (mentally) as she could be. He is eventually going to retire her (which causes "her" no dread, as she has no real emotions, only simulated responses.). He might make her the domestic unit for his primary residence, he has yet to decide.

Most people assume she is a very prim and professional assistant who is all business. It takes a while of interaction for many them to realize she is an EEI. She is an EEI with a lot of extra memory and decades of learning. She is very good at her position and putting people at ease (as Mr. Howerhousen can sometimes put people ill at ease). Her consolidated learned patterns are the basis for the next generation of "assistant units".

Appearance: She comes across as a tall woman of moderate build with classic features and long brownish red hair. She seems to wear it in a "Corporate style" of pulled back with a modest but large hairbow.
She is well dressed in business attire. She has been taken to many a social function (okay we only see one, but we can infer them), where she has been dressed appropriately and had her hair "down" in soft waves.

Note: Puppe is Puppet in German

Don't have social for naval academy so college, admit 7+, success 7+, navy officer training corp 8+ & nope, honors (to get med school and start as a medical officer) 9+ & nope, education increase of 1d6-2 resuls in ed+1... bit of a waste of 4 years fir this guy but if you're rolling for a game you want the chances at officer status.

Age 22, term 1, roll to enlist in the navy 8+ and... fail. But then the draft sticks us in anyways. Hilarity. Branch 5+2= medical. Good, that has the best survival rolls (auto or 3+), though the least decoration chances. First year is training, auto survive, 2 skills (medic & joat), nothing else. Year 2-4 patrol, shore duty, patrol, promote E2, med 2 & admin 1.
Term 2, age 26, reenlist yes. Special duty! Cross training, gunnery 1. Years 2-4, shore duty x2 & training, all auto survive & no decoration posdible, promotes all 3 to E5, get med 3.
Term 3, age 30, reenlist into gunnery because we got training. Patrol x3 then special duty to gunnery school, throw 5+ vs 6 skills. This is where all the ship weaponry & screens skills come from. The patrols net promotes to E7, forward observer 1 & mechanic 1.
Term 4, age 34, lose 1 dex, reenlist into gunnery again. Three fucking special duties and a patrol. Gunnery school again, officer school ranks us to O1 & pilot 1, bribery 1, admin 2, we'll choose to be a medical officer and go back to using the medical tables since they're safer. Specialist school for vehicle 1. The patrol gets us promited to O2 & computer 1.
Term 5, age 38, lose another dex, reenlist as medical officer. Strike, training, patrol, shore duty. Promote O3, ship tactic 1, joat 2, electronics 1, gun combat 1. We tried some of the officer & general navy life tables this time.
Term 6, reenlist, age 42, lose 1 off all physical stats. Strike x3 and a shore patrol. Rolled 3 promotions but officers cap at 1/term. Skills went full navy life with a +4 mod and got +dex, +ed, & +2 endurance.
Muster out and didn't roll boxcars.
8 rolls on the muster table, crap money, 2x low passage, blade 2, +2 int.
