2023 Character Creation Challenge

Best Selling RPGs - Available Now @ DriveThruRPG.com
Well, apparently I'm not even doing a character a day, but I tend to do systems I like, have just gotten into, or are working with in some fashion. Doing a different system every day just seems like a lot of work (I'm fundamentally pretty lazy).

Same for me. If I have to pull out the book and effectively reread it, then it's a no-go for the challenge. I need to be fresh enough with the game to get through the mechanical bits quickly.

Yeah, I thought of trying a different system initially, but ultimately decided to focus on systems I like instead, and the discovery process of making multiple characters for a new system. Haven't been able to make more lately, cuz I've been focusing on my own game, which kinda keeps me from reading new stuff.

Same for me. If I have to pull out the book and effectively reread it, then it's a no-go for the challenge. I need to be fresh enough with the game to get through the mechanical bits quickly.
There are some rules light games that don't give me this problem, but generally this is exactly it - I'm not re-reading rules unless I have a reason beyond the character challenge.

I'm doing a different game each day, though some are similar to each other (i.e. the various OSR and Cepheus-based games I've done). Plus I'm trying to create characters for games I haven't done before as much as possible, or using different supplements for the ones where I have.

It helps that I have a strong bias towards lighter systems with quick chargen.

System :: Stardrifter
Version :: Alpha 0.04.3

Righto pubsters, today's offering is Stardrifter, a medium-weight space
opera game I found while scrounging around for more free systems. I'm
actually pleasantly surprised by this one. It's logically set out and
well-presented, with a lot of options crammed into a small package. I am
especially impressed with the way armour is handled. A few more
inventory options would have been welcome though. Another thing I liked
is that that many skills give you a choice of controlling attribute.
For example, cargo handling lets you choose between WIS or STR,
reflecting the difference between knowing what you're doing and being
able to shift huge crates with muscle power.

There's also rules for spaceships and spaceship creation, but I didn't
take a closer look at those.

I for once rolled really well for attributes so I made my guy a
swashbucking space opera hero inspired by the larger-than-life mid 20th
century protagonists. Think Captain Kirk, Buck Rogers, or Flash* Gordon.

Everyone, meet Slade O'Connor!

System: Destined (Mythras Superheroes)

Name: Karl Anderson
Karl Anderson came from outside Minneapolis, being not particularly exceptional save being fairly well liked in his heavily Scandinavian hometown. After a job fair, he went to work for the CIA for a good length of time, reporting on Russian activities to influence the Ukrainian government in Kyiv. Despite not being particularly good with the Russian language, he always seemed to stumble upon just exactly what was needed for his superiors.

This luck continued for himself when he was following someone through the streets and stumbled upon a nondescript door. He went through and found a small shrine to the norse deity Odin there, with a small modern whiskey flask. Curious, he picked up the flask and was then beset with visions of the norse god of war himself, informing him that Karl was in fact of his own blood and instructed him to take the flask and drink of it when he needed to influence those around him.

As he took it and left, he heard a shot and he went down. He nearly bled out in the street, but was taken to a hospital to recover. Unfortunately, his cover had been blown, and he was taken out of the action and to a desk job. Unable to bear this, he quite the agency and moved out west to see how he could put his skills to use

I was thinking of doing a system a day, but then decided that I should instead show the range of a system. And then decided to make them a party (2+ PC). And then I ran two one-shots with those characters, so I'd suggest that this was a good use of the challenge:thumbsup:!
Plans just have to morph as you execute them:grin:!

Since I'm not running a game this week, but playing one, I'm doing...roughly "whatever I feel like", instead.

And since I've been thinking of Talislanta...

Fine black iron chain mail over fine leather undergarments, velveteen cloak, kneehigh boots, hair confined in silver bands, dueling sword, a belt of knives for throwing, leatherbound spell book, graymane, 100 gold lumens in Zandir crescents.

Bio:
Jerspo is among the few Zandir who do not use magic. Sure, he has studied it, he just doesn't feel he's nearly good enough to actually use it.
Besides, his swordsmanship is considered magical by lesser minds anyway. He fought a Thrall once, in a duel over a dropped handkerchief, and lived to tell the tale.
Unlike the Thrall, it must be added. It was a live-or-die matter...
Some attribute this to luck. He scoffs and asks why they don't ever get lucky.
But for now, he is content working for a Cymrillian merchant, one who pays for his skill with ringing Zandir crescents. Granted, for a bodyguard it's creating a bit of a problem when his ward is accused of cheating at every city that you stop; but Jerspo's sword has so far proven them all wrong, so it cannot be true, right?

System Notes: Since Honor + Intrigue has already been covered in this thread, I don't see a need to rehash things, but just want to note that this is a conversion of the Flashing Blades character I posted here two weeks ago. Thanks to AsenRG for inspiring me to pick this one up!

Morvan finds it easier in many situations to dress and act as a man, and has become quite skilled at it over time, with only her closest friends and companions knowing the truth. Another who knows her secret is the master thief Oliver Chelac, for whom her parents occasionally worked. In gratitude for their service, he has granted her one favor -- anything in his power to do, no questions asked -- to be called in whenever she needs it.

Investigative Build Points: 0/32
General Build Points: 0/70

His Ex's apartment in Amsterdam

Background

Sam Whitman grew up in the system. His father was a crooked cop, and his mother died in the fallout when his father was found out. to say he had trust issues was putting it mildly, and growing up on the street his lack of respect for authority and his natural intelligence got him in trouble more than once. But it always seemed to go away. He was sponsored in a special program that only a few select children in the system were chosen for, and found his life change as he was cared for and in the best schools- but the damage had been done. His increased access only made his scams larger. He was eclectic, running cons and forgeries of everything from petty documents to artwork. It wasn't until later that he found out he wasn't as clean in his work as he'd thought- the company had its eye on him for a while, and pulled him in once there was nowhere for him to go.

He was a valuable asset for the agency, able to blend in most places and his natural charm and abilities helping once he was inside to pull off elaborate cons for various purposes, supposedly on the side of the angels. But even as he started to get more in touch with his side that wanted to help, he chafed at the authority over him. This was aggravated as he began to see strange things in his assignments. He became close to one of his sources- York- he didn't like that Sam worked for the company, but liked him, so they had a unique relationship that helped him work at an even higher level than he would otherwise.

Three things caused him to leave the company: First, he found out his balking and questions were causing problems for his mentor. Added to that, York found out that his mentor had been the one to groom him- paying because he felt guilty about dragging his father down. The final straw was Jessica. He'd grown close to her, but one of his ops followed him into what little personal life he had. He had to end up telling her, and finding out he'd been lying about so much was too much for her. Deciding he wanted out, he faked his death. But that's when things really started to get weird...

He wasn't good enough to go pro, though, and after graduating he fell into work as a rover (a sort of explorer/prospector/sometime-smuggler). A recent job went wrong and cost him a literal arm, and replacing it cost a figurative arm and a leg, which means he's going to be out here a while. At least he gets to see new places, and there's always the chance of a lucky strike on the next job.

Is that the Columbia Games version? We tried to play it and the lazy editing turned us off. It needed another pass or two before being put out on the market. A shame too because the setting was cool and the Harn system worked ok when the rules didn’t fight us due to shit editing. I don’t remember the specifics but they are things like the rules for first aid packs not making sense and other problems that were obviously due to the conversion from the original system to Harn Master.

That's the one. I haven't tried to play it yet, but had hoped it would be a decent system for harder sci-fi. Even just during character creation, which is pretty straightforward, there are editing issues. The most noticeable for character creation is the random table for education has 'drop-out,' 'high school,' 'college' (described as stuff like a two-year business diploma) and 'university' (for studies like botany, chemistry, etc.). Seemed fine, until I got to the Careers table.

Which had a minimum education level to enter a career: one of those four education levels, plus 'Military' as the requirement for the Pilot career. Not Mercenary or Marine, those only needed high school; only the Pilot career needed Military level education. (Although in the full write-up for the Lawman career it had Military education as an alternative to College.)

Not a big deal, nothing else keys off the education level (that I saw) so if someone wants to be a Pilot then sure, they had Military education. But why include a table that locks out a fairly important career option?

Shame, too. I had hope for it!

this is the first version of the above character. notably, he convinced a hero of the hindi god to break our word and plant a bomb on a nazi motorcycle and kill him, architected and masterminded the plan to break into a nazi castle and rescue 500 POWs and take them across europe, and escaped the bowels of a nazi ship filled with zombies, powered by souls, that transformed into a giant robot in the english channel. he's pretty epic

Day 26: Barbarians of Lemuria

Here I use Barbarians of Lemuria to model a character for a planetary romance romp. I've run out of characters that I'd pre-made for this challenge, and here toward the end I'm finding myself shorter on time. So, there's not really a backstory here. The basic idea is that he's a red Martian who served as soldier, excelled as both a scout & spy but who really came into his own exploring the world beyond his city's walls.

I made up the boons and flaws on the spot. Enjoy.

System :: Convergence Point
Version :: 1.9

26) Junior Hoilett
I can not remember his name in the series. I think it is Junior, but I could be wrong. Contact me if you have the right one.

All this set of characters are based on the "anime" of The Neo Frontiers. The full anime series Neo Frontiers is not supposed to focus on any particular character but follows several characters throughout the course of the series. Although each one gets to be a star in one episode some just continue to follow their life. They are all interlinked around the high school "stage" characters. They will be at the level of when they first appear in the "anime".

Name: Junior Hoilett
Core Trait: Human Sparker of the Neo Frontiers Era

We first see Junior briefly in the store scenes. He works at the store where Mango the Great buys his games and things. He treats Mango the Great as a "Rock Star", fawning over him. Kaede gets preferential treatment because she is with him. He mentions he has a new job being a sparker (electrician, a dangerous field in an age of solar activity) for a Data System of note. They both give him their condolences. It is obvious he is not just a clerk, but he knows about Data Systems (computers), ICTs, and wiring. (Note: He could of been in the Squadron Control Room with Roberto Yee in Series2. It is hard to tell.)

The Neo Frontier Era has been experiencing a Miyake Period (named after Miyake Event). Much more than a Carrington Event, it is a long term series of solar mass ejections and more importantly electromagnetic bursts. (Imagine a Carrington Event but lasting on and off for years). This is why we have buried cables (and lots of cables) and minimal wireless communication (and no cell phones/ wifi). The "Duck and Cover" of the Neo Frontiers (especially in Space) is an incoming solar mass injection. The odd cloud formations that many people complain about are not "art choices", they are aurora in the sky from the particle reactions.

Sparkers are the nickname for people who work with power sources and lines/ connections. Many of them monitor and work with power cell or fuel cell systems. Some of them work with pebble nuclear arrangements. They also do the electrical work and wiring. Given the frequency of solar flares and other things, working with longer wires or powered systems is actually a little more dangerous than it should be or would have been in decades past or centuries future.

Description: One of the only characters of African descent in the series. He is average looking with short afro like hairstyle. He dresses in Hawaiian styled shirts and shorts in the store.

System :: Dominion Rules
Version :: 3.1

I'm not sure why, but I found this system to be joyless and irritating.
Character generation was a slog, my rolls were absolute dogshit as
usual, and I found myself just not caring, so today's entry will be
pretty perfunctory. I know I'm being unfair but I'm not feeling it today.

Jan27_final.png

Sex cartoons. It covers everything from mildly suggestive to hardcore pornography. (I actually thought the latter was less interesting as a comic than a cartoon who was considered outrageous in the 50s but now was tame).
No, sorry - what I meant (but not what I asked) is "what does the subtype give you, abilities-wise"!

Other than that, from your write-up I got that you play characters from a cartoon/comic and that they're having adventures in a world that's mostly based on our own...though I wasn't able to conclude whether everyone was a cartoon character, or just the PCs:thumbsup:!

"Immune to Burn, Bleed, and Poison; but suffer double effects from fear effects, or effects which involuntarily move you" comes from that bit.

It's both, like Who Framed Roger Rabbit. You can even choose to play a human (or "meathead").

Also, thebigh thebigh I understand completely "not feeling" a system, but I actually found Dominion Rules to be quite...appealing? Expressive in a dull, "Warhammery mud-and-shit" way?

Anyway, I'll try to illustrate that with my next character. I guess I might have to make another Gothic Brides character.
So without further ado...

System: Dominion Rules
Ver: 3.11.

Helena the Sea Witch
Female, Elf

VIG: 1
AGI: 2
STA: 2
INTU: 1
INTE: 4
LUCK: 3
I got Favourable Rounding on the Character Generation table. Fits fine: Helena isn't someone who has lots of raw power, and yet she's very useful, "punching above her weight" in the party.
I also rolled a total of 18 on 3d, so I got to spread 6 points on her stats. Well, that's...almost qualified me to get Favourable Rounding again!

Combat Composite: 2
Priestly Composite: Irrelevant
Witchy Composite: 4

I had exactly 18 on stats, so I got no reminder. Just 45 AP to spend on skills.
I am going to set 12 of them aside for weapons, armour and Lucky Breaks. So I've got 33 to spend (only).

Which means that I need her skills now:
Alertness 2
Dance 5
Detect Lies 2
Medical Lore 5
Sorcery 6
Staff Fighting 3
Swim 2
Timing 3
Withstand Injury 3
Withstand Magic 3

That's me getting exactly 1 upgrade in each of them, apart from Sorcery. Not much, but it is a starting character. And I should get more APs soon, we hope.

Spell Points: 15 Better to not waste them...

OTOH, it seems that you get spells from the skills you've trained without paying for them. That is something good!

Bio: Helena had always had a strong relationship with the sea (random guess as to why she's called "sea witch"). She has been captured by the Church, but managed to escape, and nobody knows how.
What is known by most (in the area of the ruins, at least) is that she is now part of the team sent by the Witch Covenant to explore some suspicious ruins. They might be, of course, useless.
Or they might be the road to finding a way to destroy all demons.

"Immune to Burn, Bleed, and Poison; but suffer double effects from fear effects, or effects which involuntarily move you" comes from that bit.
OK, I guess...I can see that a smutty comic wouldn't have characters that bleed depicted on screen:tongue:!

(Vampire smut might differ, just ask Anita Blake:shade:!)

It's both, like Who Framed Roger Rabbit. You can even choose to play a human (or "meathead").
Does anyone pick human:grin:?

Day 26

System: Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures
Version: N/A
Publisher: Flatland Games

System Notes: This is an OSR game heavily inspired by authors such as Lloyd Alexander, Ursula K. LeGuin, and Susan Cooper, where the characters are village friends just starting out in their adventuring lives. Being a big Alexander fan (which shouldn't be a surprise), I figured this game would be of interest to me, and so far I think the authors have got the tone and feel right. It has an option to use playbooks for character generation, which is what I did for this character, in order to generate their stats and abilities (though you can use the tradtional method as well).

Dr. Dominic Parker was biking home from work one evening when he was struck by a drunk driver. Even worse, he was thrown into one of the ditches dotting his semi-rural suburb and landed unconscious in a pool of standing water just deep enough to drown in.

He wasn't going to let death stop him, though. He had a responsibility. His daughter's dog Dino was at home. Lucy couldn't take care of Dino anymore, the leukemia made sure of that. And after Lucy, Madelyn couldn't even look at Dominic any more, and he couldn't blame her; he had put the family through such financial stress to get a medical degree that was in the end absolutely useless. So Dino was alone and if Dominic didn't get up and get moving and make it home then the last remnant of his family was going to slowly starve to death and it would be Dominic's fault again for just lying here.

So Dominic got up. His bike was destroyed, so he walked home. And by the time he reached his door he knew something wrong had happened and he was undead. But Dino still recognized him, still slowly padded over for a pat, so Dominic knew it couldn't be too wrong.

Dominic could't keep working as a GP, of course, way too much interaction for his current condition. He wound up managing the local morgue, which didn't require too much in-person communication and gave him enough income to afford dog food and vet bills. And this work has brought him into contact with some interesting local characters.
