They have said that they are looking to move a number of their books off KS, especially supplements for established lines. Symbaroum's latest book was preorder only for example.
Yeah, I've seen that- that's just diversification of revenue, I thought, rather than a move off KS, which was one of the points in my post. Evil Hat does stuff off Kickstarter, but have firmly said that KS is one part of their overall strategy.

This KS they went big and offered tons of swag, which gets them into the history books, but is gonna eat up a lot of the KS money. I hope they priced in exchange rates, etc. so they can get paid well.

Next two KS they could still offer dice and dice bags, maps of the city, etc. if they’re going to make those coffee-table gorgeous, they they might get money for hardbound color collector’s editions.
The swag is similar to and possibly even smaller than they have done for previous KSs like Root and Urban Shadows. However, I agree that when numbers get as big as they are, there is a real concern that numbers can blow out easily which is why its nice to see them stick to their guns so far around further SGs.

Tomas Harenstam has raised this issue in a number of the monthly updates in YT. TBH I am mostly repeating back what he is saying  Its pretty exhausting and costly to have every book funded via KS with all the added SGs that come with it. So, moving supplements over to pre-order is seen as a sensible conservation of energy and focus.

I seem to recall that they considered normal preorder for further Forbidden Lands and Tales of the Loops supplements. I was actually surprised that the latest Forbidden Lands supplement was released on KS, but maybe that's because there has been a length of time since the last release.

I’ve heard the same thing from other people. Massive KS’s usually have massive SG’s which are a boon to the supporters, because the bigger the KS gets, the more “free” stuff gets added. It’s a pain in the ass for most RPG publishers because they’re not in the toy business and don’t want to be, especially with the labor costs on their end for whoever is doing all the processing/packing/shipping.

I wouldn’t mind Free League partnering with CMON to do minis releases for Mutant Year Zero, Forbidden Lands, Coriolis, T2000, etc.

Most of the ones that I know that look at Kickstarter as a supplemental revenue stream have (a) limited their SGs to expansions of the product to make it better rather than the physical items, and (b) limited their number of SGs to the ones that they already have planned if they get the money. I personally view the additional physical items as red flags and have backed out of more than one KS because of the amount of free stuff that they offer because of the advent of 'death by stretch goal'.

Yeah, unless they’ve proven they can handle the load, I try to stay away from big physical stretch goals, because shifting currency and tariffs has sunk more than one KS. If I go big on Physical rewards it’s probably a collector’s edition book (like TOR), or someone who knows what they’re doing (like Beowulf), or a big mini blast (like Monolith, Reaper and Cmon).

Yep. There are 4 between $6 and $7m, so those should all be passed, so its definitely going to get to #6. After that the pack opens up quite a lot.

This has now passed $7m and is the 5th most funded Tabletop Game KS.

Magpie has sensibly said no more physical stretch goals.

“Our next stretch goal will be to complete the long awaited Far West Roleplaying game because we have money to burn.”
"And then we thought better of it, when we realized we could get more tangible benefit from literally setting money on fire."

Now you’ve done it. Anything associated with Far West is bound to fail, badly.

You’ve just ruined the Kickstarter experience of around 60,000 people/backers!

When they find out you are in sooo much trouble.

I just hope Skarka doesn’t see this and kickstart ‘Avatar: Farther West’, or ‘Avatar: The Far West Bender’

Into the final 24 hours and it just became the 3rd most funded tabletop game KS with ~$9m and ~75,000 backers. It more than quadrupled the previous record for a tabletop RPG and looks likely to be the top 10 most funded and most backers KS as well.

There was some controversy with one of the last stretch goals- not sure if it's going to pick up steam and cost them...

It seems like every SG has resulted in complaints TBH. The higher number of backers tends to proportionately raise the volume of dissenters.

The numbers over the last 48 hour stretch have been very high ($500k a day), so the KS seems to be very well received overall.

What one? Looking at them I can't see anything that would incite a shitstorm although these days it doesn't take much.

I’m assuming it’s the One Shot Actual Play. A lot of people don’t give a crap about “Celebrity” RPG streamers, especially the ones there for the Avatar Swag.

I think chuckdee is referring to the choice of Satine Phoenix for the Actual Play. TBP has a number of posters who seem upset with the choice given her actions during the ZakS fallout. There is similar outrage with any Magpie Game TBH given Mark Diaz Truman’s actions at that time.

However, there was also an outcry from a few backers that an actual play SG was not good. However, there has been similar amounts of outcry with previous SGs because Kickstarter.

Uh? She was part of Zak's group once as she's a former porn star and so presumably they were already familiar with each other before she got involved in RPGs (or rather, the tabletop ones), but as far as I can remember she was pretty quick to dump him just like everyone else did at the time.

I guess she didn't dump him hard enough for the TBPers...

That's it. The entitlement is strong with this KS. People are canceling pledges because of Satine Phoenix, true. (And saying things that aren't true). But there are actually more canceling because the 8m stretch goal was an actual play, which is ridiculous.

That is ridiculous.

"Here's 20 things as a package deal."
"Yay!!!!"
"Here's one more thing at no extra cost."
"That's it. I'm out."

I'm not into actual plays in general but the deal is otherwise the same as if they hadn't hit that stretch goal.

There’s also people upset that raises for the developers wasn’t a public facing stretch goal. Automatically assuming that it means no one is getting extra money from the $8millon+

I think that kind of stuff should be handled behind the scenes anyway.

So they should have had no $8M stretch goal and then used the money behind the scenes to plan the actual play.

They said they had a $8m stretch goal but it would be the last one and that it wasn't physical. I am sure that there would have been even more fallout had they not provided something. Given the proportion of the backers who are likely not familiar with RPGing, an actual play seems like a good idea.

Let’s hope they are well organized in delivering to the backers, because if there are problems it could be a nightmare.

Well what if they hit $9M by some miracle. Do they then have to come up with a stretch goal for that too? Sometimes enough is enough.

They have already signaled there may be delays due to the cardboard needed for 160,000 books. Its good that they are communicating early and its an understandable issue.

It hit $9m a while back  They have said there are no more SG after $8m.

It seems like a nightmare to have to deal with sending stretch goal items out to 81,000 people. That amount of money is going to be needed just to deal with the additional logistics on top of whatever costs there are to manufacture.

Yeah. I am happy Magpie stuck their guns despite the constant calls for MOAR SG and criticisms that some of their "out of the box" SG with of no value. At the core pledge, you still get amazing value for what you pay for.

They have just confirmed Dante Basco will be joining the actual play (along with Jennie Kwan).
Just came here to post this- he's a pretty cool dude from everything I've seen of him.

The PDF of the rules has been released to most backers. Its a pretty dense 300 page rulebook and consistent with what is in the Quickstart. I like what I am seeing.

There is quite a bit of lore in there with the first 100 pages being devoted solely to setting material.

I don't have mine yet. Did this come through DTRPG?

Edit: The update says they are sending them out in batches, so I guess I'll cool my heels for a bit.
