(OOC: MacRegan will deputise him. Out of curiosity, what would be the response from the locals regarding an African American deputy? I know in Canada at this time there was a real deep-seated racism in parts of the country, and a grudging acceptance in others.)
I'm not interested in excessive realism, plus it would vary from community to community anyway so in this particular time and place: acceptance or grudging acceptance by most people, since many of the denizens of these parts came both for opportunities unavailable to them in the East and South and to escape social mores, conventions, and prejudice (the Mormons, for instance). Reactions will also largely depend upon how Eugene comports himself. And some people dislike any law enforcement or authority figures regardless of their background, so MacRegan may not always be immediately accepted either: for example, to many Mexicans la policía are bullies not to be trusted and badges are merely symbols of corruption and abuse of power. Thus it all depends on who you're dealing with and how you act.

"Now that were all deputies what sort of course of action are we going to take in getting justice for Old Cookie? Tybalt asks Regan but is opening it up for anyone to pitch an idea.
"Well, boss," Eugene speaks up, "whatever we're Doin', we beat be quick about it. Seems everybody we may want ta arrest has at least a couple of days' ride on us..."

Eugene is loath to suggest a course of action, feeling somewhat embarrassed that his last idea bore no fruit. He feels guilty for wasting the posse's time. But he will keep.tgise feelings to himself, for now...

After MacRegan and Wayne leave for their private tête-à-tête, Cisco excuses himself and heads outside. From Mariposa's saddle, he removes his duster and a pair of trousers from his blanket roll. He quickly heads for the barn and finds a convenient stall, where he changes out of his suit and into the trousers. He quickly but carefully brushes the dust from his slacks and frock coat, then neatly folds them and rolls them back up in the blanket and returns to his horse, tying the bundle to the saddle once more before rejoining the others on the ramada.

Cisco nods gravely. 'Cuidaré del caballo como si fuera mío,' he replies, working the action on the Henry to insure that the chamber is clear and clean. Setting the box on the edge of the table, he sets about loading the longarm. As he does so, Cisco calls to the Swede ( Baeraad Baeraad), motions him over. In a hushed voice, the attorney asks the cowhand-cum-cook, 'Are you, in fact, an experienced tracker?'

'Ty, how is it we came to arrive here at the ranch before y'all?' Cisco wonders, loading the rifle carefully.

Lars coughs delicately.

"Maaaaaybe not so much," he sheepishly admit. "But I'm not actually a cook either, and if I stay here they'll figure that out, so, er, maybe we can keep that between us until we're on the road...?"

occ Sorry, unexpected travel the last two weeks. Tons of driving (even made it into Texas). I'll get caught up as quick as I can.
As punishment I did listen to the entire unabridged audiobook edition of Warlock. I also bought the first book (chronological order) in the Sackett series.

ooc not good enough, I order you to listen to the full 13-minute version of "Southern Man" on repeat until you beg for mercy

Hernández remarks to Big Jim, in such a way that it's obviously intended for everyone to hear, "I sent one of the men to tell Lucky Joe we need him to take these folks up to Redford at the line camp."

Big Jim explains to Juan, "Lucky Joe will take you out where Redford is if you still want to talk to him." To MacRegan: "That's also the last place your horse-stealin' murderers were seen."

A few minutes later, a horseman approaches from outside the ramada, barely visible in the night due to his dark skin and clothing. He deftly hops from his saddle onto the low adobe wall and straddles it with one leg on each side, showing off his fancy boots decorated with their inlaid leather design of a longhorn bull on each side and big California-style silver spurs with big rowels and jingle bobs dangling off the spur straps. Your initial impression is that he looks too clean for a run-of-the-mill ranch hand. "I'm Lucky Joe. Y'all the folks I'm s'posed t' escort t' Redford's line shack?" he asks. "I hope y'all 'preciate I had t' get out the washtub f' this."

Lucky Joe

You're all sworn in and equipped with fresh horses and saddlebags...I'll continue once I know what you're doing.

"Thanks again Wayne. Lucky Joe, I am Inspector MacRegan. We're ready to go when you are. I'd like to get a move on so that we can take as much advantage of this darkness as possible. All right men mount up. We're heading out"

Corbin starts getting ready, but first speaks to Betsy.

"Listen we're heading out into the night in pursuit of men known to be the filthy murdering sort. Why don't you remain here? To be safe.

Plus that Canadian fella looks like he'll keep us up all night on the trail. You stay here and get some rest, I'll be back soon"

Eugene turns to Mary. "Can ya ride, girl? We're likely ta do some fast and hard ridin', and it's best if ya have yet own horse. Not that I mind, miss, I just think it'd give us a better chance of catchin' these men if'n you had your own..."

Character stuff: if we are being provided fresh horses and saddlebags I just like to specify if we can get some rope (in case we have to lasso something or one of us falls down a ravine) and canteens with fresh water.

Tybalt Checks his saddlebags and then gets on the horse "beautiful night for a stroll, 'lay on Macduff'" he says to Lucky Joe.

"Also there is a soogan and a full canteen with each horse."
Is Tybalt asking anyone?

Lucky Joe casually mentions, "Afore we go, there's fitty- an' hunnert-foot maguey riatas hangin' on nails inside th' stable if'n any o' y'all knows how t' use 'em."
OOC: Who is playing Mary? Is she an NPC?
Doc Sammy Doc Sammy is/was...at this point it might be best to leave her at the ranch.

Cisco swings up into the saddle. 'How far to the line shack, Joe? he asks.
"Five mile, mo' less," Lucky Joe responds. "Ain't no straight line 'n feels further 'n 'tis, rough ground 'n all. If'n y'all's ready, best time t' start was a hour ago as th' wise man said."

MacRegan gets on his horse and looks at Mary.

"Well ma'am, I have no power to stop you one way or another if you're determined to come along. I won't deputise you, and I am not promising you any pay from me. If your friend's want to split their part of any reward it's up to them. I'd rather you stayed put, but it's on your head."

He lights his pipe, and waits for Joe to lead the way.

"Alright. I will stay put here at the ranch and hold down the fort. Be careful out there."

"They are excellent mustangs and your own horses must rest as you have ridden them hard today. Also there is a soogan and a full canteen with each horse. It can get cold at night and you'll want water." With a stern look into each of your faces, he adds, "Kill as many men as you need to, but please don't kill my horses."
"Prometido! I also find horses are, in many cases, nobler than men...or many women for that matter".
He just might be thinking of the sister of a member of the group...

"Muy apreciado!", Juan assures him seriously. Bathing is serious business, and the man is obviously making a great personal sacrifice!

He nods to McRegan.
"Well, I guess you'd also want to come to Redford, then. Let's move!"

Is what Corbin would say to that darn woman if he could find her.

"One moment Inspector" he says politely.

Corbin talks to Hernández and tries to find out if he has seen Betsy.

"No la he visto, señor," says Hernández. "Bringing women to a place like this was unwise. You might check the mess hall or the bunkhouse."

Corbin asks for directions from Hernández and heads to the bunkhouse first.

Seeing Corbin wander off alone, Lucky Joe asks the rest of you, "We waitin' on that young fella or leavin' him t' hisself?"

Also, if anyone is getting a rope, say so or you won't have it later.

Meanwhile...

Corbin hears raucous laughter emanating from the bunkhouse. When you enter, you find it's little more than a dilapidated shack tightly packed with bunk beds with a small open central area occupied by a rickety table and a half-dozen wooden chairs. A half-dozen men sit at the table playing cards and passing around one of two bottles of whiskey. The second bottle is currently being guzzled down by Betsy Sommer, who looks quite drunk and sits on the lap of a big, burly ranch hand. The shoulder straps of her dress are hanging off her arms and whiskey is dripping down her neck and onto her dress. There's a second door opposite the one through which you entered, which you can see leads directly into the mess hall. When the men register your entrance, they look up at you expectantly, their faces borderline belligerent, waiting for you to speak.

Cisco makes a point of thanking Big Jim once more, tipping his hat to the cattleman. 'Justice will be served, Mr Wayne.'

The attorney sighs. 'Tempus fugit, Corbin,' he calls, doing his best to stifle the impatience he feels.

OOC: Duma, we're still right after dinner, correct? We can catch a few zs and rest the horses at the line shack before moonrise?

Juan looks impatiently, too. He's eager to earn a bounty already.
"Maybe I should go and help him search?", he suggests. And mentally, he agrees with Hernandez, though he limits that to a sharp nod when the man says it wasn't a wise move.

"What's the hold up?"
MacRegan asks. He whistles loudly and shouts:
"Come on saddle up and let's go! Joe, lead on."

"Corbin went to check on his woman, Mister MacGregor. I think he's worried, and rightfully so - who knows why she disappeared?", Juan notes.
"It would be better if we were to make sure she's safe before going. I mean, we're lawmen now... No podemos dejar a una mujer, no?"

"How's that? Who's MacGregor? Are you telling me his wife is called Mr MacGregor? What did you say? I don't speak Spanish."

Eugene chuckles at this exchange. He says to Juan, "Let's go round up Corbin and his filly, so's we can git. Though, I expect we'll have to take her back to Saguaro, she don't seem to be the trail-ridin' sort.""

Jesus says "I'll be right back with a rope."

"Sorry, Mister MacRegan...I sometimes confuse gringo names", Juan explains. "And I said, 'we can't leave a woman on her own'. I mean, what if something was to happen to her?"
He nods at Eugene.
"That's for her man, Corbin, to decide, but you might want to suggest it...OK, let's go find them both. He went towards the mess hall, no?"

"If'n we can't leave a woman here on her own, Then Mary rides with us, or goes home... unless, she'd rather stay, I guess. She looks like she can handle herself. I imagine in her line of work, she's dealt with rough hombres a-plenty."

ooc I will definitely be taking some rope...
OOC: Juan would, too. But isn't it time for the mess hall brawl?
(OOC: MacRegan will take a rope. He might need it to hang McCoy and Jones)
Jesus says "I'll be right back with a rope."
We'll handle this as Corbin wandering off while Eugene, MacRegan, Juan, and Jesús went to the stable to get their riatas, which we'll default to fifty feet unless otherwise specified.

It's about 7:15 p.m., the sun is setting and the moon will be visible over the mountains in the east in about 45 minutes. If you leave now, you can probably get to the line camp before moonrise.

Lucky Joe sits his horse and adjusts his hat as he comments, "Y'all remind me o' my time with th' 10th Cavalry back at Leavenworth. Whole lotta hurry up 'n wait."

"Too handy a tool too leave without it" Tybalt says to Lucky Joe as he pats his saddlebags.
