The TTA game actually looks kind of cool system wise for space games.

Background: The Engleford family are "new money", having been given their lands by Henry VIII. A minor gentry family, but with a longstanding friendship with Cromwell, they were among one of the first gentry families to embrace puritanism and among the first to declare themselves in favour of Cromwell's rebellion. Anthony is their rather sickly fourth son. It was hard for him to know what to do with his life. He wasn't healthy enough for the army and wasn't pious enough for the clergy. But family connections managed to get him a role as one of the very few official iconoclasts in England. He is now payed a stipend by Parliament to travel the country smashing idolatrous icons. While Anthony is a Puritan (and dresses accordingly) he's only averagely pious and his real passion is for the parlimentary cause. This leads him to approach his work with a certain ruthless efficiency. He doesn't go in for casual cruelty (and unlike some of his peers his animosity towards Laudians and Catholics is solely political, not personal), but calls for mercy also fall on deaf ears. While a dedicated believer in parliamentary supremacy he is no radical, also being strongly in favour of keeping the property qualification for the electorate. The reported rise in Leveller sentiments in the New Model Army concerns him somewhat.

You can't do a character creation thing and not do Traveller. Traveller chargen is crazy ridiculous fun. Everyone knows that.

The middle son of a wealthy landowner in Hesperides, a prosperous garden planet. Disowned after a quickly-hushed incident involving a barrel of brandy, several friends and a prize cow, secured a comfortable appointment at the Ministry of Agriculture through family connections (despite an absolute, appalling lack of qualifications) and advanced on sheer dumb luck, but managed to learn just enough to not be a complete idiot -- and to wonder about the larger universe beyond his home planet. A handy thing to wonder about, when an audit discovers you've screwed up a major planetary survey and your mistake will cost the government trillions; Lionel boarded the first free trader out of Hesperides and never looked back.

Lionel is tall and a bit scrawny, but handsome and dignified. Dapper dresser and sports impeccably groomed hair and moustache. Good public speaker when substance is not an issue. Does and says nothing to suggest that he's on the run, like that guy who's been fired for gross incompetence but his LinkedIn profile says "seeking new challenges" (e.g. "not starving to death")

Ash Daley was an extraordinarily gifted teen physically, which was matched with a keen mind. He was just entering the world of high school, and high school sports (Swim team and Football.) While on spring break he and several friends went camping in the woods.

During the middle of their break the saw a flash of falling stars drawing the teens to rushed to get the best view they could of the beautiful light. What caught Ash's attention though was a dark spot that crossed against the stars he knew. That dark shape intrigued him and his need to know what had blacked out a few stars momentarily on familiar star shapes he knew. He ran to get closer, and saw something crash in North Creek Lake, despite his friends admonitions against the early fall chill, he pulled of his outer clothes to swim out to see what it was. In the murky lake depths he couldn't not see much but for a golden glow, and he swam for it where he found a golden metal rod clutches in a strange creatures hands, pulling them to the far sure he discover a scared young alien clutching the rod. Not knowing what to do he examined the alien, and did what little he remrmbered from boy scouts--and surprisingly it worked! Giving the creature crucial moments to breath, before his friends could reach him he then carried the alien to a nearby cave, where he often used to hide as a kid and tried to create a fire--for warmth, but before he could manage the alien's parents arrived. Ready for hostile life-forms.

Instead finding a mere boy, trying to keep their only daughter alive and warm. Calming they saw to her care, and took pains to utilize what little language they'd learned from observing Earth to explain their crashed craft, and having no safe abode. Fortunately, Ash's mother was the local sheriff, and known more than once for picking up stray animals for their farm. Once he was able to convince them to use their devices to contact her, he had her come out and keep the other teens at bay. While she made sure both her son and the aliens were well enough. Once he was dressed warmly, and he told his friends his mother would handle the crashed drone parts he'd found, they dispersed, less interested in a mere drone breaking up. Though it seemed exciting for about ten seconds.

The aliens gave their proper names with difficulty, and thanks to the patience of his mother, her penchant for strays and his own kindness, they were taken to her home and given shelter in unused rooms. The aliens, a generally peaceful pair of scientists and their daughter melded into Ash's family life. When they finally managed to contact their home, they decided to stay as "observers" since their interest in Earth was advancing their understanding of the universe.

In reward for saving their daughter, he was given two gifts, one of the "Defense Field Regulators" the large glowing rods they used to generate protective shields for their craft, their daughter had managed to grab one to protect herself from impact when she was thrown from the craft on its breakup.

As well as their daughter's hand in marriage. He still doesn't know what to do with the latter as the very though confuses him.

He's figured out how to be more than he was, using the "Power Rod" to fly, protect himself, and project fields of force driven by his imagination and intellect. Not something the aliens ever expected their device was capable of doing until coupled with the humans alien mind.

For now he pretends to be and adult hero who has a hiding place somewhere in the mountains since his costume, and the rod help distort his identity. While following his high school life. His new "betrothed" attends school as well, using a holo-emitter to hide who she is and how alien she appears, surprisingly human enough though he's smitten, making almost every girl at school incredibly jealous, at the shy new transfer student who seem to hold his interest.

Bio:
A big city soup kitchen janitor who is a refugee from the Middle East. Gets along well with everyone, and takes a protective fatherly interest in the most at-risk who arrive. His words of wisdom are known to resonate with some homeless during their darker times (Tongues Celestial). Been known to even find and rescue them from urban dangers; says he learned how as a refugee.

"Speaks halting English, yet surprisingly fluent in other tongues (Tongues Corporeal). Been caught nodding to sleep on the job (Projection Corporeal), but otherwise gets everything done. Has amazing rapport with the mentally disturbed (Harmony Ethereal, Healing Ethereal), even going as far as finding and returning them to public services (Cherub attunement, Attraction Corporeal/Celestial). Would recommend." -- Soup Kitchen Director

"They need good home. But first need believe worth a home." /points to own heart

It's interesting to see it. Despite all the jokes, I've never seen somebody actually go through Char Gen and what the output would be like. It's like a nutty Harnmaster or something.

Remove the sexual stuff and it looks like a typical 80-90's character.
It actually reminds me of Zweihander with its obsession for randomly determining everything.

It's an early example of the "new old school" design subset who don't understand that randomness is the road, not the destination.

I'm coming to this late and am not sure if I will be able to do this every day...but why not. Here's my first character, for HOSTILE:

This is fucking insane and definitely not in a good way. These people clearly have issues. (And as with most authors of “realistic” rulesets, a poor notion of what they’re modeling.)

Even if you put the sex stuff aside, it's genuinely unplayable. Do give just one example, the bugbears are hated by all other races apart from Kobolds who just dislike them. You can see the issue in an adventuring party.

I used the dragonsfoot online generator for most of it since it's lookups and what not. I just copy and pasted the results here.

I was sorely tempted to use online generators for some games.

But I finally decided to get books (sometimes a PDF but you can’t have it all) and dice. And I’m glad I did. I really, really missed the sensory experience of rolling dice.

Manhood Length: 9.61 inches

Does the author explain why a manhood needs to be defined to a hundredth of an inch? Call me a pessimist, but if procreation was precision engineering, I'd say humanity wouldn't have made it out of the treetops.

Also, asking as a bloody foreigner: Does the word “manhood” sound juvenile to a native speaker, given the circumstances?

It's an early example of the "new old school" design subset who don't understand that randomness is the road, not the destination.

Hey, that would pretty much sum up “F.A.T.E.L.”, if it existed outside the head of its creator.

I've come across that word quite a few times reading Fringeworthy, by the way.

Bonus Points: 0/15

Attributes:
Athlete [5]
Charisma [4]
Luck [4]
Martial Arts [7]
Speed: [5]

Quote: “Nobody has the intention to build a wall.”

Back Story: Formerly a conglomerate of merry little princedoms where happy beer-swilling peasants thought and wrote poetry and danced the Beat-Hoven, Germanland is now divided into two equally oppressive superpowers: The Reich, led by Reich Chancellor Helmet Coal (inventor of the iconic spiked coalscuttle helmet), is constantly seeking forcible Reunification with the Black Forest occupied by Julius Caesar's Holy Roman Empire. Overlooking the four austere Hartz mountains at the center of the brooding woods looms the dark fortress of Neubeerstein. Here Kaiser Franz-Josef, Caesar's scheming satrap, holds court. To fend off the Reich, he has hung up an impregnable Iron Curtain that runs the length of the Eurozone.

Born to charcoal burner Horst and swan-maiden Annette, Fritz Walter Ulbricht enjoys a carefree youth in the Black Forest. But one day he returns from his vocational school to find his home ransacked and his parents gone, abducted by Reich Chancellor Coal. Devastated, young Fritz attempts suicide but is rescued by Colonel Dietrich of Bearne, a warrior monk who takes Fritz into his monastery on the top of the Brocken mountain where he becomes a master of the martial art of kicking balls and bricklaying (“it's never wrong to learn a trade, my boy”). On his deathbed, Dietrich bequeathes to him the Miracel Bearnaise (see below).

Previously on Diana: Warrior Princess: Helmet Coal's daughter Angie Mielke has stolen the sacred Euro-Vision, a crystal that, held framed by thumbs and indexes at the navel, enables the user to scry the flow of currency anywhere in the Eurozone. Diana is determined to recover it before Angie turns it against her own countrymen. Fritz helps Diana and her friends escape from Franz-Josef's Oktoberfest dungeons and they slip around the Iron Curtain via the Red Sea, which completely surrounds Angie's smog-shrouded island of Berlin.

Possessions: The Miracel Bearnaise, a mystic jar of indestructible glass which holds a never-ending supply of viscuous pale fluid. Pour a line of it, and a ten-foot concrete wall springs up. Kick it against a wall, and a ten-foot section of it will come down. 1 use of either form every 12 hours.

Weapons: None, he only uses his feet.

Notes: Fritz is very reluctant to use the powers of the Miracel Bearnaise. In fact, he has to be pestered into doing so every time, allowing him to utter his catchphrase before circumstances force him to use it anyway.

I doubt size is related to procreation as much as it is either related to direct measurement tests or as it relates to damage. I suspect it is the Phoenix Command of sex related RPGs.

I was actually intrigued by your Fringeworthy character sheet, BTW. Looks crazy too, but the good kind of crazy.

I know just enough German history to chuckle at this. Can't place the "Fritz" in his name, or divine who Dietrich of Bearne is supposed to be.

So much bewildering TMI from that "fatel" character. Were people generating adventures based on a PC's clean jerk, kinetic charisma, enunciation spoken words per minute, and highest potential math (geometry)? I can't even imagine... It's almost like a gauntlet thrown down in challenge forgetting what it was fighting about.

...I will try a superhero RPG. Which I like, but never play, because my players are soulless monsters.

I went with random chargen (for Attributes and Powers; when it came to Specialties I broke down and picked), which I'm philosophically opposed to in superhero gams, but decided to give it a try. Not sure whether the result below confirms my convictions, or whether I just plain suck at this and should stick to fantasy, SF and horror.

This — rather nauseatingly — suggests that Black Leaf's bugbear can be “reasonably” expected to arrive at situations where the players would need to compare his “manhood” to a vagina (or in whatever term FATAL's author thinks of lady parts) and a hundredth of an inch would make a difference. Or maybe the typical FATAL player is just like “hey, I have a 9.6 inch schwanz” — “hur, hur, mine is 9.61, you loooooser!”

Come to think of it, if the guys were still in business, I'd pay for a one-on-one session of FATAL between Bevis and Butthead. If I had the money.

I was actually intrigued by your Fringeworthy character sheet, BTW. Looks crazy too, but the good kind of crazy.

Character generation isn't that bad, really. It's just 4d6-4s till your palm grows protective fur and a number of d4s+x for skills. There's a d10 in there somewhere. The math topped out at averaging three stats. And lots of flipping through the book, because some derived values are there in the character generation section but others placed near the pertinent rules. While it certainly isn't bad kind of crazy on a FATAL-level, I don't think Fringeworthy is the good kind of crazy, either, but at a minimum it's organizationally crazy. The “damage” section takes up half the rules, because e.g. combat equals damaging a target, so it's the same as falling, only different, or being irradiated, only different, or having an infection, only different. There's pages upon pages with body charts for umpteenth hit locations, broken down by what I'd call penetration (from a graze to shattered bones), wound characteristics, hydrostatic shock (is that still a thing?) and whatnot. I was on the Outpost Games (somethink like a sister-in-law firm to Tri Tac Games) mailing list in the 90s, and ISTR one of the authors admitted that even Richard Tucholka himself never used the rules as written.

The way I see it, Tucholka had four brilliant ideas in the 70s/80s, one became Fallout, the other The X-Files, the third Stargate, and the fourth split between Andromeda and Voyager and stuff. Only he approached them from the wrong side and his works never became as successful. Shame, really.

I know just enough German history to chuckle at this. Can't place the "Fritz" in his name, or divine who Dietrich of Bearne is supposed to be.
Fritz Walter was the captain of the West German football team that won the 1954 world cup, restoring… I don't know, I won't call it national pride (though the right-wingers probably did) but rather a bit of self-esteem.

Walter Ulbricht denied intending to build a Berlin Wall right up to when he built it.

Dietrich of Bern is a highly mythologisized Theoderic of Verona, over the centuries warping into a paragon of knightly virtue. He even struts in at the tail end of the monumental cock up that is the Nibelungenlied to clean up the mess by offing everybody who's still standing.

So much bewildering TMI from that "fatel" character.

To be clear, Black Leaf posted a character for the game FATAL, arguably the world's worst RPG evar. I alluded to a game called — very much IIRC — FATE or F.A.T.E. (and no, not that FATE), a rather distant runner up to whose name I quite uncharitably added an L while describing it to a mate of mine.
So FATAL != F.A.T.E.L., and I'm sorry about the confusion.

MSH Again. I know I'm a day behind but I'll add one later today to make up for it. (I'll probably do H&S then..modeling, I think or maybe rank expenditure though rolling is fun)

Professor Christine Roth

Justin Lee was a reasonably intelligent young man with no interest in sports; very much an almost cliched introverted nerd. He was obsessed with chemistry and other geek obsessions. When he went to college, he studied chemistry, and other basic sciences. During one his study as a graduate student he was accidentally exposed to a chemical compound's fumes, originally intended to be used to help produce improved plastics, due to a failure of his protective mask (the fumes did indeed impact something flexibility. Trying to warn his professor, before his professor entered the closed, but not sealed off lab, and explosion occurred as the fumes came in contact the electrical sockets of the room. The result destroyed the lab, transforming him into someone who could heal rapidly from wounds, whose body was extremely malleable and who could stretch like an elastic band.

The explosion damaged the lab, and experiments across all the labs were put on hold as the fumes were cleared. Dr. Roth suffered minor burns but also healed faster, though without the other powers. Dr. Roth had a strong moral code, and suggested Jason take up the life of a hero, encourage him to take on combat skills she felt would be needed, as well as to help aid him in the use of his powers. Jason, was not opposed to this idea, in fact he was thrilled by it. (He followed superhero news and a part of his geeky obsessions.) Now empowered he took up Dr. Roth's suggestions and took on the identity of Mr. Malleable. While not the most physically healthy, his resilience and recovery are enhanced by his powers.

Currently he continues his education, under much more restrictive constraints (though it was neither his mentor, nor his own fault that the fumes had the impact they did, while the chemical on its own, had little effect without mixing with certain natural contaminants even in clean room labs.)

I think you hit the nail on the head. It's a pretty juvenile game from what I've heard.
I suspect the game was intentionally written to shock and offend.

It absolutely does in this context. It's the kind of term a 70s British sex farce would use.

Has FATAL a “standard” or “author intended” mode of play?

There's some very generic GM advice. (Remember it's a role playing game. Think about the character's personalities when writing adventures). There's also a pretty bogstandard adventure. You go and investigate why a hamlet have disappeared. (Spoiler: A wizard did it). There's also a fair few references to "strumpets offer themselves to the PC if they can use their enunciation dexterity to recite a tongue twister. Maybe it was different elsewhere, but back in my student days I don't remember that being a great chat up line and it makes me suspect the author has never actually talked to a real life woman.

I think you hit the nail on the head. It's a pretty juvenile game from what I've heard.
I suspect the game was intentionally written to shock and offend.

That's probably the case, although personally I find it too stupid and puerile to be actually shocking. It just tries to hard.

Some people think it's a joke game, but I suspect not. Mostly because it's 901 pages long.

Now for a game that doesn't suck, the little known but very good CABAL. I'm creating a cabal on my own here, but it's something you'd do as a group if you were playing it.

Background: This is a game where I think it pretty much provides one for you.The Order of the Golden Shield is a reasonably new and underresourced secret society dedicated to fighting demons. The reason it's loyalty is lower than can be expected isn't because of a lack of loyalty to the cause per se. It's because this kind of organisation tends to attract people with their own agendas, from gung ho glory hunters to occultists looking for personal power.

Today I'm presenting a character for Flashing Blades.

H&S2E:

We decided to just generate a thumbnail first, but use spending ranks. The Editor's pitch is a street-level, gritty and grim, campaign. Very different from four color and higher powered gaming.

So our thumbnail is:

{Name} invented/created a/an {Device} which has/gives {Powers} and also gives {Abilities}

Since we don't know ranks or powers/abilities yet, we think on it. Decide our hero is a neighborhood defender of some sort but why? We look at the drives for inspiration.

I decide I like Community for the pitch. She grew up here, she loves the GOOD people who run the local corner grocery store, and the little Lebanese resteraunt across the street from it, and the variety of local places. Now we know she's smart, because she invented a device that gives her powers, and additional abilities.

While thinking, I decide she calls her the Scarlet Specter, and that she invented a device--a cloak and cowl that lets her turn invisible. (Name borrowed from a friend.) Of course the cloak is scarlet.

Abilities offer superskills, and also devices, or Unusual body features, the latter makes less sense, but is doable. I decide to make her a superskilled acrobat. So even when seen she can dodge in spectacilar ways.

Now, we've got a name:

Scarlet Specter (Felicia Fox) naming herself The Red Fox would be too obvious though I'm tempted.
Drive: Community.

Now her attributes start at Average Human.

So
Might: Average Human
Agility: Average Human
Toughness: Average Human
Intellect: Average Human
Knowledge: Average Human
Resolve: Average Human.

I know she needs to save some ranks for later, for her device and skill. So I spend very cautiously. A Street level campaign gives 12 ranks.
So we up a few things

Might: Exceptional Human (She is an athlete)
Agility: Exceptional Human (Got to base that superskill on something.)
Toughness: Spectacular Human (She grew up in a tough neighborhood.)
Intellect: Spectacular Human (She built a cloak of invisibility)
Knowledge Spectacular Human (She's studied a lot of different things!)
Resolve: Spectacular Human (Again she grew up in a tough neighborhood, but weathered it into an adult!)

That's 10 Ranks.

Average-Exceptional is 1
Exceptional to Spectacular is 2.

Now, in a way this is kind of "tricking" the system. Ordinarily powers start with no ranks, and it has to be bought up. But Superskill is a special case it must be equal to the base ability +1, so she gets for one rank. Superskill: Acrobatics at Spectacular human, putting her up their with gold medal gymnasts!

That leaves her one rank left for her cloak. Wanting to be a bit better than "Average" we drop her Knowledge to Exceptional--she's not world renowned for her knowledge, just above normal. So she gets Exceptional Invisibility.

Scarlet Specter (Felicia Fox)
Drive: Community

Might: Exceptional Human
Agility: Exceptional Human
Toughness: Spectacular Human
Intellect: Spectacular Human
Knowledge: Exceptional Human
Resolve: Spectacular Human

Powers and Abilities:
Exceptional Invisibility Cloak
Superskill: Spectacular Acrobatics.

Now if I wanted, I could drop an attribute and move her Superskill to beyond normal human range--which is possible with one or two powers (max) according to this Editor.

But I'm good here, she's pretty complete.

Ekhano was born into the wealthy Lysoran merchant house Korophilop. He was not a good merchant and his family quietly exiled him to a factory in the Beshaar desert, where he spent most of his time bow-hunting and carousing with the local Beshari prince. This is why he escaped the massacre that wiped out house Korophilop (corporate takeovers were really hostile in those days). Crossing the Gulf of Satarla back to Lysor, his ship was captured by pirates, and he was sold as a slave to high priest Canphor the Divine Light in Zalut, who gave him the name Sami. Being smart, nimble and, most of all, literate, he quickly rose to the position of temple scribe. This meant copying and research in the city's libraries, where Sami learned the ancient language of Ygdarri in the process. The thaumaturgical background radiation of Zalut, the City of Magicians, caused his latent talent to manifest, and his owner — who had fallen in love with the attractive youth — broke tradition by sending him to his magician friend Argilipius as an apprentice instead of putting him down. Sami diligently studied arcane lore and upon graduation, where he acquired the -sius suffix, left Zalut on his journeyman voyage.

I was going to create a Savage Rifts character but it seems DTRPG pulled my (pre-SWADE) Savage Rifts Player's Guide and I am mad as hell. I'll make it up to y'all later today, or maybe tomorrow.

Tri Tac, 1992.

“There is no best of three rolls or picking the ‘best’ of 6 dice.”
Fringeworthy, p. 007. Yes, page double-oh-seven, I'm not kidding.

Cool. I played a fair amount of Fringeworthy back in the late 90’s. My favorite part of the game was seeing how the detailed damage mapped out. And the often horrific results.

Funniest moment was sone one bringing in a new character. First session, first encounter and sone nasty big creature hits the character in the groin, destroying the family jewels snd then the character promptly fails Death Shock. Boom, dead.
