. . . a holiday, far away . . .

I took a break of a couple of weeks, to cleanse my palate, detoxify, whatever you want to call it. It wasn't enough. I find myself wanting to put posters on Ignore every time I look at the board. My posts are getting sharper, not smarter. My bad uncle in Yonkers is talking in my ear, telling me to bring the car down.

I love roleplaying games; they're not quite like anything else in the world. I love both sides of the screen. I used to like talking about games, but not so much anymore. I'm getting old; there are so many other things I could do with my time, and trying to have good faith conversations seems so hard, much harder than it should be.

I've participated on many forums, for something like twenty years now,. I've known a few of you longer than I've known my kids. And yet, I kinda dread visiting the Pub.

In the past, I've gone dark without fanfare. Walked away from EN World, Big Purple, alt-Tangency/Pundejo's Playhouse without a peep. I want to say thank you this time. I've learned a lot, shared a bit - I hope some of it was helpful. You made me think, and I appreciate that so much.

And thanks to our hosts. This place is the best, full stop. Believe me when I say, it's not you, it's me.

I hope the time away's good for you. I like your approach to games, and the ways that you think about them; it's refreshing simple and pleasing. Find yourself in Aberdeen, and you're always welcome at my table.

That's a pity - it was a post of yours on COTI that brought me here. You've always been at the more cogent end of the punters here and I think the pub will be a little the worse for the absence of an old pirate.

I've given up on sites I enjoyed, because they were part of a time in my life I didn't want to revisit. Sometimes it's best to leave while things are still good.

Will miss reading your posts, but first and foremost you need to do what's best for you.

I feel you man. I also recently took a long break from here. A little to much drama on here, at the time.

Hope it's not permanent. Even though we don't share the same taste in games. I've always enjoyed reading your posts, as far back as the time I lurked on the Site.

Till the winds blow you back into our lives again. Sail well.

(Psst, it's been a global star chart thingie. ;) A lot of communities have had recent kerfuffles and bristly interactions of late, as anticipated by my sextant readings (and hence calculated absence). Don't read more into these feelings beyond we are but motes floating upon an ocean of stars with its own currents. We flow about them.)

I think a lot of people dial up or down to whatever the relative level of drama there is on a forum. Most people here were at the Site or the Big Purple where the drama could get up to 11. They come here years later, where, let’s face it, there’s nowhere near the drama. The Pub probably averages a 5 for drama on a bad day. For some people, a 5 here can feel like an 11. I own the place so I can’t take breaks but what I usually do when I get stressed is visit other sites and then I realize that this isn’t so bad, even on those worst days.

Since I don't know what drama we're talking about I can at least say the drama is staying confined at the moment and I like that.

Something I don't like about relative comparisons is the other locales can go to 20 and us going to 8 would seem ok by comparison. I'd like to stay under 4 on an absolute scale

I think 99% of the drama here is contentious threads that cause certain members to get a little snippy with each other. I don’t want to discount how people feel though, especially with the last year we’ve had IRL where stress is through the roof.

The drama comment wasn't meant as a passive-aggressive attack or to stir up debate. You and the rest of the staff here run a great forum. Honestly I don't even remember what the drama was, or if it was just something I perceived as such. Hope this clears it up.

Black Vulmea Black Vulmea If it wasn't clear last time. Wish you all the best, on whatever pirating endeavours you next embark on.

I'm a lurker here, but this is why I've been gravitating here way more than any other RPG forum. No drama. It feels more like adults talking.
