Golden Heroes: New Hope OOC

Best Selling RPGs - Available Now @ DriveThruRPG.com
Okay, it is possible I could start this game before the end of the week. However, my wife and I will be out of town Fri-Sun for a little weekend getaway so if I don't get it started by Thursday, look for the first IC post on Monday, March 25th. Once Gringnr Gringnr posts up his sheet and background, that will just leave Bunch Bunch to finish up as well.

Loving the characters and backgrounds everyone! It's one of the things I love about Golden Heroes. Rolling random powers makes for some interesting heroes. This should be fun!

Will get to this as soon as I am able, later tonight or mañana.

I've been doing in on paper in my spare time. I'll try to get it up tonight

I'm just fascinated how everyone will get together! Not really a 'you meet down the pub' sort of thing, is it? :smile:

Well we could all be separately tracking bad guys who decide to meet at a public to plot their next mission.....

Another tried-and-true option is a threat manifests itself in a public place like Central Park and everyone just happens to respond to it at the same time. :thumbsup:

Looking over the character sheets, there are a few other terminology changes between C: S and GH. I will list them here, with the C: S name first, and the GH name second.

Armour Class=Defence (C: S lists Armour Class as A, B, C, D, etc. In GH, this translates to a number. A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, etc.)
Knockback Threshold = Pushback Threshold
Panels = Frames
Pages = Rounds
Panels per Page = Frames per Round
Health = Hits to Kill
Stamina = Hits to Coma
Battered = Hospitalized
Dazed = Staggered
Damage References like 2d6S or 1d6-6H = 2d6HTC or 1d6-6HTK

Campaign Ratings
Competence = Practice
Popularity=Total Public Status
Fame = Publicity
Investigation=Total Detective Points
Social Circle=Expression
Confidence=Total Personal Status

Also, in GH, Total Public Status, Total Detective Points and Total Personal Status are just the sum of the total of the five ratings in that group. These can be multiplied by 3 to give a percentage chance of using them in meaningful ways in-game. In C: S, the five ratings in each group are totaled and multiplied by 3 to give the rating. This difference isn't really a difference, just a different way of listing the rating. For example, Investigation in C:S would be derived from Methods, Approachability, Fame, Power Use, and Contacts. Using the Genie as an example, his total of those ratings is 15, multiplied by 3 to give Investigation rating of 45. In GH, this is determined the same way. Only difference is Fame is called Publicity in GH and Investigation is Total Detective Points. Using the Genie again, his total is 15. That would be what is listed for Total Detective Points. We would then multiply by 3 when attempting to use the Detective Points in game. Both ways give a 45% chance of using them, and are just listed differently (plus the couple of terminology changes).

Just an aside here, but I think Blacky the Blackball should receive some kind of honorary ENnie.

I have updated my second posting of setting information, the one that starts describing the districts of the city. I have added a section at the bottom with additional general setting information. Check it out here.

(Suggested) Campaign Ratings:
Backing: 1 (unless we're starting as known heroes)
Heroism: 4
Public Relations: 4
Identification: 4
Practice: 1 if we're all brand-new, otherwise 4 or 5 assuming he's fought some local supervillains
Total Public Status: 14?

Methods: 3
Publicity: 3
Approachability: 3
Power Use: 1
Contacts: 1 if new, otherwise 5?
Total Detective Points: 11?

Conscience: 4
Success Rate: 0 if new, otherwise ?
Public Response: 2? depends on Public Status
Expression: 5
Security: 8
Total Personal Status: 19 or more?

Backing: I will allow anywhere from a 1-3, leaving it ultimately up to you as to what you want for your character.
Practice: I am okay with a rating of 1-5 for this, your choice as to how much practice you've had.
Contacts: Also fine with 1-5 for this, your choice.
Success Rate: 0 or 1 for this I think, your choice.
Public Response: Depends on final public status

Otherwise, all other totals look fine to me.

Backing = 2
Heroism = 4
Identification = 1
Public Relations = 4
Practice = 1
Total Public Status = 36

Methods = 3
Approachability = 2
Publicity = 4
Power Use = 2
Contacts = 4
Total Detective Points = 45

Conscience = 3
Expression = 2
Success Rate = 0
Public Response = 2
Security = 5
Total Personal Status = 36

Success Rate: I will allow a 1 here if you'd like, or you can leave it at 0 if you desire. If you change it, it will change your Total Personal Status to 39.

You can leave the Total's as is, but remember that in GH, the number is one-third the number listed in C:S, although there is no difference as C:S is just taking into consideration the multiplication by three that GH does on the fly when using these ratings in game.

Backing = 3
Heroism = 3
Identification = 3
Public Relations = 3
Competence = 1
Popularity = 39

Methods = 3
Approachability = 3
Fame = 4
Power Use = 1
Contacts = 5
Investigation = 48

Conscience = 2*
Social Circle = 4*
Success Rate = 0
Public Response = 2
Security = 8
Confidence = 48

All of these ratings seem fine. If you'd like, you can add 1 to Success Rate if you'd like to say Gravitas has participated in one adventure prior to starting, otherwise leaving it a 0 is fine. If you do change it, Confidence goes up to 51.

Keep in mind my earlier post where I went over the name changes between C:S and GH for a few of the Campaign Ratings here.

Gringnr Gringnr and Bunch Bunch, you guys can feel free to suggest totals for your Campaign Ratings like the others did and I will go over them once you have them posted to make sure they look good. Other than that and a couple of characters getting finalized, we should be about ready to go.

Hope to get more time to fill this out but here is my character sheet as it stands

Red Trident
Evan Williamson
Male , 6'2", 220lbs, Right Handed

Equipment
Trident
Padded Unstable Molecule Costume DC5
Line slinger

Sorry still busy but here's the highlights
Runs the Ookwo Martial Arts Center
Ookwo is a form of martial arts heavily emphasizing the use of various polearms.
His master found a child and refocused him as a model citizen encouraging him to protect his community
He found his master dying attacked by unknown assailants.
His masters dying words were to protect a red trident he had hidden in the dojo and carry on teaching Ookwo.
While meditating with the trident it unlocked new powers in Evan allowing him to reach farther than humanly possible and slow opponents down by crushing them to the floor by concentrating on it.
He seeks to find his masters killers and defend his neighborhood.

I'm thinking his name will be the Red Trident (changed my mind about a Spear). Probably use a costume a bit like the black and red Daredevil costume.

Obviously with a Trident instead of batons.

Works for me. Can't really edit previous post at the moment, but will do so later.

And I just found out that there's a second GH clone out there (Squadron UK).
SqUK was actually a revised edition of Golden Heroes by the same author, Simon Burley. Burley believed that after decades of inactivity, the rights to GH had reverted to him. He wrote to Games Workshop, telling them he planned to publish a revised edition. Hearing nothing back, he published the first edition of Squadron UK in The mid-2000s. This was pretty much a straight update with new art, though the basic combat resolution was changed from rolling on a table to rolling D20+Weapon Class+Defence Class of target, hit 18 or better. It was reviewed well and sold well enough (it was PDF only) that Burley wanted to publish it professionally. His prospective publisher wanted to use the GH name, so Burley again write Games Workshop. This time, he got an answer- a "Cease and Desist" order. So he went back to the drawing board, and in the early 'tens, the second, totally not illegal edition of Squadron UK was produced. It retains much of the original, but there are definitely new design elements in it as well. On balance there are things about it that I like, and things that I don't, compared to GH. But it's close enough that you can essentially play the same game with a few tweaks, many of which are allowed for in the Squadron UK rules, which are more flexible in many ways than those of GH. It adds a skill system, which I like. And character advancement is improved, IMO. While old school GH is my jam, I could see playing SqUK.

If you are interested in hearing a bit more about what Gringnr Gringnr wrote above, Simon discusses it in two episodes of the always excellent Grognard Files podcast:

Back to the game, and far be it from me to be interfering with other PCs, but for Dumarest Dumarest and Bunch Bunch then sounds like an ideal opportunity for a pre-existing team up: Double Devil and Pitchfork! Skill sets seem to be very complimentary as one is a ranged specialist and the other is a hand to hand master. They make life 'hell' for criminals :smile:

I've looked a little bit at SqUK. Of the three options, I prefer Golden Heroes, Codename:Spandex and Squadron UK in that order. I like C:S better than SqUK because C:S is a near direct clone of GH. The second version of SqUK went a little too far with the changes in my opinion, although I understand why it had to with the problems Simon had with GW. Seems ridiculous that GW gets to keep a stranglehold on the rights to a game they have no intention of doing anything further with and haven't done anything with in over 30 years.

It adds a skill system, which I like.

Regarding skills, this is something I meant to mention a little earlier but forgot.

Obviously there is no real skills system in GH. There is the Skills power but that is an indicator of someone being essentially a master in whatever skills they end up with. For everyday skill purposes, I will assume competence with any skill that you can justify that makes sense for your established background. Double Devil knows about the movie business and being a stuntman, for example. Gravitas knows business. The Genie probably has a good knowledge of ancient history and is likely charismatic.

Additionally, the Campaign Ratings system works as a sort of skill system as well. Any of the Total Public Status, Total Personal Status and Total Detective Status can be rolled for certain situations like dealing with the police or governmental officials, using your investigative abilities, charming the public or getting their assistance, etc.

For all other situations, I will eyeball it and decide if it makes sense for your character to be able to do it. Everyday stuff like driving, pulling general information from a computer, etc. will be considered easy enough for anyone to do unless there is something in their background that would prevent it. For most things like this, no roll will be required. If there is some sort of consequence of failure and what is being attempted is not necessarily easy, there might be a dice roll involved. This might be a simple percentage roll, "Roll under 50% to succeed" or a d20 roll, "Roll under your Dexterity on a d20".

Generally this should be pretty seamless. Just describe what actions in game that you are taking. Most times, a roll likely won't be required. If I feel one is needed, I will ask for it at that time.

Do it.

Dooooooo eeeeeeeeet.

Works for me
Pitchfork sounds like a bad "Southern rock" band name. Now I'm picturing long greasy hair parted down the middle, bell-bottom dungarees, and a Gibson Flying V painted with the Confederate Navy jack.

"Free Bird, ya'll! Yee-haw!"

Red Trident not Pitchfork.

As mentioned earlier, the wife and I are leaving town in the morning for a quick weekend getaway. I will return Sunday evening and will either make the first IC post then or sometime on Monday. If everyone could finish up any last details on their characters and backgrounds by then, that would be excellent!

Will try to finish tonight may be tomorrow evening though

I just need to update Double Devil's Campaign Ratings and am otherwise all set.
