GW The Old World is back?

Best Selling RPGs - Available Now @ DriveThruRPG.com
I probably should have just driven down to a nearby game store yesterday and bought the books rather than preordering them through GW's site, 2 weeks ago. I knew the store would get a good amount in stock, and I doubt that they've sold out. Shipping of the preorders also appears to be delayed, with rough weather conditions occurring in the SE of the US.

But I'm not in a desperate rush to get the books in my hands immediately. It'll be a slow burn for me to put an Old World army together. I have very few WFB models remaining from when I played 6th edition, 20 years ago. So, it'll take time to assemble a force once I've got the models - and I'm rather dependent on GW putting out an Empire box and individual kits to get the models I need.

I've personally become rather tired and frustrated by the whole FOMO deal that is frequently our norm these days with rpgs and other items. I think it might help me back less projects on Kickstarter because I do find myself just tired of the churn of it all.

Do I have the disposable income and desire to get these items? Yes, yes I do. Am I tired of often feeling stressed about not getting it if I don't back it right fucking now? Damn skippy.

So when I see these things go up for sale and are sold out within minutes, I tend to have a reaction towards the company or developer that's negative. The Oldhammer and a recent Kickstarter are reinforcing that for me.

Can a rigidly structured modern GW game recapture the wild gonzo thrill of Warhammer's early days?

Nah. Oldhammer remains Oldhammer. But TOW could capture the feel of Middlehammer, which I think is what most folks under Middle Age are looking at as far as nostalgia.

Legacy Army pdfs dropped this morning. So far, Skaven list making we very happy.

Master Assassin with Weeping Blades for 140 pts, WS 8, BS 7, I 8, 3 xS4 attacks with AP -2, Poisoned & Magical attacks doing D3 damage each.

That's enough to take out a vanilla High Elf or Vampire Counts Lord

Looks Like Deathmaster Snikch is Back on the Menu Bois!

So about Kislev and Cathay.

* Fans of Warhammer: The Old World should note that there aren't any current plans to bring Kislev or Grand Cathay to the tabletop for the foreseeable future.
Plans changed, I guess.

And I know GW say a lot of things, but this sort of "yeah not happening any time soon" isn't common, especially as they seemed pretty hyped about them in the past.

There's a whole power struggle thing going on behind the scenes right now, I wouldn't trust any of the contradictory things being said on social media till it gets straightened out. If not, TOW's success could actually end up killing it.

So, in other words, it's a typical behind the scenes GW mess. heh. Or what we'd call a Friday...(glances around...yeah it's Friday)

Having investigated further, ah yes. Accountants ruin everything.

I have never ruined anything.

I have made people rethink clearly stupid decisions.

As a fan of The Old World (circa 1990) they just need a new accountant who can advise them that releasing all of their older GW Specialist Games (which seem to sell out as quickly as they produce them) would be a good idea, if only I knew one...

Wouldn't object to another release of Space Hulk. Assuming I can get the order in before all the scalpers do.

They've been good over the last two years of instituting caps on orders and doing PoD - so the orders determine how many are made, not counting The Old World's launch disaster (which was only partly GW's fault), which at least isn't a limited production run but intended for ongoing availability.

But they still cultivate FOMO in a way I find rather uncomfortable.

If I was to advise them, it would be to run regular kickstarters for reprints of classic boxed games and expansions, in the manner that CGL has been very successful at with BattleTech. Space Hulk, Dread Fleet, Warmaster, etc. Mordheim alone could fuel an eco-system of Kickstarters. In the context of a KS I am ok with FOMO, because it's available to everyone who wants to participate.

Yeah, this whole artifical FOMO is one of the reasons I dropped Kill Team for Deadzone. Its too easy to get sucked into thinking you NEED TO BUY IT NOW. People were losing their minds trying to find the latest KT box set over Christmas and yet my local FLGS had at least 2 copies of it just sitting on the shelf last week.

On issue with that is unless you constantly watch Kickstarter or are on fan sites you can easily miss kickstarters and these days that’s harder than ever with more and more crowdfunding sites popping up so you can’t only watch Kickstarter and feel confident you won’t miss out.

If they were doing this you wouldn't have to be watching KS, just Warhammer Community or whatever. Maybe an email subscription? There are lots of ways to avoid Kickstarter FOMO.

Yeah, but Kickstarters from large games companies (like Catalyst) get regularly discussed beforehand online, and you can sign up for notifications, so a person would really need to be out of touch with the hobby to miss one. And even if they miss one, they can get caught up the slack in the sequel campaign, if it's not one and done like cmon. Not to mention game retailers these days often invest in KS.

GW are possibly big enough not to use Kickstarter or any of the rivals to crowdfund.

Sure there's a visibility issue there, but cutting out the middleman and keeping it in in-house is something they are capable of (or should be) and they are more than capable of driving the necessary traffic if they decided to do it.

Sure, they don't need to use it, the same as Mantic, Catalyst, etc. don't need to use it, but it's a valuable sales tool that simultaneously provides a pre-investment from customers that determines accurate business logistics and generates direct customer engagement and the effects of FOMO (without the more frustrating aspects of boutique sales). Most importantly, It significantly reduces the financial risk of reproducing a specialist product that GW is unsure would be viable in the marketplace.

I meant they could run a crowd funding campaign from their own website, not use Kickstarter. Should have been more clear.

Oh yeah, like HasLab. I could honestly see GW going that way actually now that you mention it.

I'm so disgusted with the artificially induced state of FOMO these days, that I'm tempted to get a tattoo that says "FOMO is the mind killer". When they can alienate whales like myself, they're doing it wrong.

This is about where I'm at. I think I'm going to pass on the Old World.

Which is shocking.

Same. That looks so good. I'm not rebasing anything (I already went from square to round bases, I'm not going back in the other direction) but a new army that wasn't in WHFB 8th? Maybe.
