I want to like RPGMatch because it seems like a good idea, but it does a terrible job doing what it says on the tin. It'll tell me someone's 91% compatible, but when I look, I discover they don't play when I can, don't play the games I play, and don't engage in my preferred play style. So... what are the points of compatibility?

It could be a question of the size of the user pool. It's new, so there aren't many people to choose from. But that doesn't explain all the weird matchups.

How about you? Any luck at all?

I think a part of the problem is its matching "times" and "games" with equal weight, making it so you have a higher percentage if your times match, rather than games matching, and it might be better if they were weighted. Which is a problem. I've had no luck, but I'm quite busy with games so that's what I imagined.

I signed up for it. The closest user to me on the entire system is 150 miles away. So, in-person gaming matches aren't really an option. And since I'm not really interested in online, it's kind of a bust.

no, zero, nothing. moreover I suspect large part of accounts are... not human-intensive. you can PM a lot of them and you won t get any answer.

Finding players is one of the reasons I'm currently sticking with Roll20. Thankfully I DO play online.

For local in-person play, a global player database is going to have to offer something really compelling to attract enough players to be useful. Far better to seek out local options for finding players. When I moved to Oregon, I utilized a local mailing list to connect with players. Another option may be game specific forums. When I decided to try out Burning Wheel, I connected with several players on the Burning Wheel forums.

I created a profile when there was a previous thread about it here hoping I might find some compatible local folks I could invite to my current game running in a local store. The match results I got were such nonsense (people in other countries with no games in common, etc) that I never bothered to go back and would’ve deleted my profile but couldn’t find a way to do so.

I like the idea behind it, but their algorithm needs work. If there’s nobody else on the site who’s compatible with me I’d rather they told me that (and I might continue to check in from time to time to see if anybody showed up), but saying I’m 91% compatible with somebody I’m very clearly not compatible with just makes it annoying and worthless.

Yeah, just signed up and it seems ... less than useful. I have very few matches, but I'm getting 60% for someone on a different continent, who plays different games to me, and with whom I have no time overlap. It's weird.

Not a sausage but I blame myself. It matches me with D&D folks because I clicked I'll play anything. But the list of games seems to arbitrary and thrown together and it's such a laboriously tedious interface.

I was thinking it was using astrology or weather prediction in the older days (before satellites) as its criteria

This is the first I've heard of the site. Let's see what it's like creating a profile...

I suspect that I might not be the generational target for this site. Besides that....

From the 'matches' I skimmed through, the style of play selections and the age range seemed to contribute the most to a higher match percentage. Games Played seemed to have some slight influence. And location had no relevance at all when it came to matching. (There was a gamer in London that I matched 80% with, and a gamer that lived in my county where the match was 55%).

It’s odd that they have you put your available days/times and what VTTs you use (with an option for none) but don’t seem to factor those into the match results. You should only show as a good match with people who use the same VTT platform and are available at the same times, regardless of all other factors. And if you don’t use a VTT (like me) you should only show as a good match for people in your area (probably add a question for how many miles you’re willing to travel for a game) who are available at the same time.

But doing that would eliminate a lot of matches for a lot of people, and apparently the guy running the app decided he’d rather show people high match scores than matches that are actually accurate and useful. Yeah there might only be 1-2 people (or zero) in the LA area who play the same games/game style as me and are available to play at the same times, but that’s fine - I wouldn’t want to add more than 1 or 2 more people to my group anyway.

Another option might be to allow users to toggle whether time/date availability and VTT platform are match factors, to maybe allow those who want to to see what’s potentially out there to help inform what VTT they want to use or what times to make themselves available for, but not spam up the match results for everybody else.

Just logged in again.

Games played has zero relevance. Matched high with D&D and Fate players. They’re not in my list at all and I don’t have “I’ll play anything” checked.

Time zone has little relevance.
Availability within the time zone depends on the OTHER guy. I put evenings in (I’m in GMT+1) and was matched with folks in California (GMT-8). So it’s 9 am on a weekday for them when it’s time for the game to start? Conclusion: they didn’t put any effort into the the times and just selected everything.

At this point it’s just a waste of time.

What's the problem? Just pick what 90+% of people would put down anyway: "hetero", "fuck off" and "WHAT?!?"

I mean, those are among the options, right:tongue:?

"Cha might seem like my dump stat but I always roll a 20 to Perform"
"...due to my Con!"
:shade:

At this point it’s just a waste of time.
Alas, sure seems that way:thumbsup:!
