"...so...what happened in that alley?"
Finn looks about a bit nonplussed. "This probably isn't the right place to go into detail, chief. The short version is that we were ambushed by a cybernetic assassin with some sort of prosthetic suicide bomb. Actually, that's almost the long version, too. Your people have her, I hope? I'd be glad to further discuss the matter with you over dinner, or if you can wait till morning, breakfast."

Finn then gestures a thumb at the officers. "As for these guys - who are they, my new security detail? I hope they know what they're in for - ambassadors on Titan tend to get attacked by fanatical teleporting cultists and cybernetic suicide bombers. You guys are trained for that, right?"

OOC: My jaw literally dropped IRL haha

Lassie chuckles slightly, before handing it back. "Let me at least put something on, if this is the case." He eventually returns dressed. "Alright let's get this show on the road. No time to dilly dally. I suggest we go over everything at the station."

"Alright let's get this show on the road. No time to dilly dally. I suggest we go over everything at the station."
Finn's shoulders slump in weariness. "You're only saying that because you got a shower. But..." Finn hesitates. "I suppose time is of the essence."

"Let me at least put something on, if this is the case."
"Yeah, in my time as police chief I took a more formal approach to dress code" the old chief of police says with a wry smile

"They are indeed your new security detail" the chief of police says in an exasperated tone.

The guards look to each other nervously after Finn makes his remarks.

"We were briefed, but well we usually just break up bar fights..." one younger guard says a bit nervously.

"Alright let's get this show on the road. No time to dilly dally. I suggest we go over everything at the station."
Finn's shoulders slump in weariness. "You're only saying that because you got a shower. But..." Finn hesitates. "I suppose time is of the essence."
"Alright then..." the chief of police signals to the guards "...let's get going"

OOC: Police station coming up later today

Lassiter and Finn are walked through the Admin complex, led into an elevator then along more corridors.

"Better not to go in through the police station's front entrance with your new entourage ambassador. The name's Nilsen by the way" the old police chief says as he guides them down a sterile white corridor with a glass viewing window on one side.

"We brought some people in from medical and pathology, you'll know Dr Blix..."

He looks in through the glass, gritting his teeth slightly.

"It's hard to get the info we need without killing her. But she has a cranial implant and other sophisticated stuff in her. So either Jovian or supplied by them..." he says turning to Finn and Lassiter waiting for a reply.

OOC: How is Blix's temperament in there?
EDIT: I was pretty tired when I wrote this and realise I completely misunderstood and thought Blix was a suspect!!

"We've spoken to her at length, she's been highly useful. Whether we've been played due to a Jovian connection remains to be seen, but it's good information to have."

"Can you trace her arrival on the colony? When did she first appear on cams?"

"Surely there are some other threads to pull," Finn muses. "Who is she? Where did she come from? Who has she been in contact with? Either she's an off-worlder or a native, but either way, she should show up in a database or security camera records.

"And is she conscious? Responsive? How badly hurt was she?"

"Four months ago. She shows up in Lake town. Was working as a mining technician"

"Who she is for certain is...well not certain. Her records say she is Hina Walker. Migrant from Jupiter, sonic drilling equipment technician. Moved here four months ago. As for contacts mostly just her coworkers and flatmates in Lake Town.

She was conscious. We've sedated her as when she regained it she tried to fire that thing in her arm again. Needs time to build a charge. The space needed for that thing's power supply has come at the cost of plenty of her organs. She edging pretty close to the robot end of cyborg to be honest.

No major permanent damage but you really did a number on her with that needle gun. Good choice. Fried some of her circuitry. I'd say her coordination will be poor for a while"

"What were her stats in terms of work performance? Starting to sound like she was planted here as a sleeper agent."

"Hmm, sounds like a Jovian agent. They probably won't own up to it, but you should pressure them over it." Suddenly, realization hits Finn. "Shit, that's kind of my job now. I better figure out how to file a formal complaint on behalf of Mars. Has a new Jovian ambassador been appointed since Renner? I was going to look into that anyway as part of the investigation, but now we have something else to talk about."
She edging pretty close to the robot end of cyborg to be honest.
"Well now," Finn says, looking at Lassiter with a twinkle in his eye. "Robots can be hacked. And I think we know a guy."
No major permanent damage but you really did a number on her with that needle gun. Good choice.
"More like a lucky choice," Finn admits ruefully. "We spotted the tail and I was looking for a way to subdue her peacefully. It...sorta worked out? I mean, I'm an ambassador now, so things are looking up."

"What were her stats in terms of work performance? Starting to sound like she was planted here as a sleeper agent."
"Better than the average. Promoted quick enough. Sleeper agent was my thinking as well"

"Has a new Jovian ambassador been appointed since Renner? I was going to look into that anyway as part of the investigation, but now we have something else to talk about."
"Yes. Staying in an equally plush apartment. I'll send you the details. The name is Jesen Torrente"

"Well now," Finn says, looking at Lassiter with a twinkle in his eye. "Robots can be hacked. And I think we know a guy."
The police chief raises an eyebrow.

"This 'guy' above board?"

"More like a lucky choice," Finn admits ruefully. "We spotted the tail and I was looking for a way to subdue her peacefully. It...sorta worked out? I mean, I'm an ambassador now, so things are looking up."
"Hmmm" he says with a blank expression.

"Yes. Staying in an equally plush apartment. I'll send you the details. The name is Jesen Torrente"
"Thank you," replies Finn. "I have a number of things I'd like to discuss with Ambassador Torrente as soon as possible, so that will be very helpful."
"This 'guy' above board?"
"Beats me," replies Finn with a shrug. "He's a freelancer and I didn't ask to see a police record. But I know for a fact that he's one of the best on Titan, and he has experience hacking into cyberware. Go ahead and vet him, but if you don't have anyone who can do the job, we'll have to weigh all the pros and cons."
"Hmmm" he says with a blank expression.
"C'mon chief, I'm just joking around to lighten the mood. Don't worry; this is an emergency situation, and once we all get through it, Lassiter will get out of your chair. You know, neither of us asked for this, either, and we're pretty freaked out, too. We didn't come here to make trouble in your nice mining colony."

"Alright, alright. You're right. So what's your next step? I'll help how I can"

OOC: Wow, it's Thursday already? I don't know how that happened so quickly.

Finn pulls out his tablet and nods to Lassiter and the chief. "Chief...chief. I'll let you guys focus on the physical evidence for the moment. I should probably send out a bunch of messages in my new role and make some arrangements for the next step. But I hope you'll catch me up.

"Oh, and Lassiter, don't forget we have an appointment with Edwards tomorrow. I'm hoping we can take care of that first thing."

Finn steps to the side and composes a few messages:
  • Lev Tsirelson, asking if he'd be interested in working for the government. It's not a sure thing if he says yes because there's a screening process, but if he only has minor issues, I'll look into getting those complaints "expedited" in addition to whatever payment we can work out.
  • Jesen Torrente, requesting an appointment ASAP to discuss the current security situation.
  • My authorities on Mars, complimenting them for their decisive action, promising to be careful and keep Mars interests at heart at all times, etc. I'll also promise to send daily updates, and request daily updates on my orders and other priorities.
  • Administrator Koga, requesting a meeting in the afternoon with her and the current chief.
  • My uncle, thanking him for doing what I knew only he could do.
Finn also wants to reach out to some of the underground contacts that 4M put him in touch with, and ask for a meet sometime tomorrow.

The response is quick.

Well I've hacked a few entertainment services in my time, I'd probably be hammered on that account. But nothing black market or like seriously bad. So yes I'd be up for it. Especially after what you last came to me for

Administrator Koga, requesting a meeting in the afternoon with her and the current chief.
Koga gives her usual courteous but curt response, simply acknowledging that yes in fact they can arrange a meeting in the morning.

OOC: Koga's office a short walk from where Edwards is being kept so there's no risk of missing her just to let you know

The others currently have not responded

Finn also wants to reach out to some of the underground contacts that 4M put him in touch with, and ask for a meet sometime tomorrow.
Finn gets a response straightaway on the encrypted channel.

Ambassador Shah,

We have been ready and eager to hear from you. Come meet us at the Little Moon Moussaka restaurant whenever suits you. Preferably at night, but ultimately your discretion.

Your new employees

OOC: Apologies, very busy work at week and I neglected this site as a whole! Will read over and update ASAP

Lassie absent-mindedly rubs the back of his head while Finn works in a flurry sending messages. "Chief... Chief? I am going to keep calling you Chief because I don't intent to be in this position long. Chief, is there a medical unit I can visit? I've recently come to feel a little under the weather and I want to get that sorted before diving into closing this investigation."

"Of course. We'll get you to Titan general right now Sir if you wish"

Finn calls out to Lassiter without looking up from his typing. "You sure you want to do that? Don't know what their procedures are here, and you might get sidetracked for quite some time. I've got some cold medicine back with my things, if you want."

"I'd rather not go out to general hospital, I think." Lassie says, shooting a side eye at Finn that goes unnoticed by his partner. "I was thinking more discrete and in-house, not to cause a fuss."

Finn passes Lev's contact information to the chief for vetting. "Can't hurt. We can't let this get any worse by mindlessly compromising security. If you're OK with him, I'll ask him to come by tomorrow."

Finn pauses to let anyone else interject. "If there's nothing else for now, I want to get some rest. We've got big plans for tomorrow, Lassie. Chief, we'll be in close contact, so let's keep each other in the loop."

If nobody has anything else, Finn will head to his new quarters with his security detail. On his way, he'll shoot Lucas a message.

"Stay frosty, brother. There may be more work soon if you're up for it."

"I'm sure Blix can see you here then Sir" the chief of police responds.

OOC: Depending on what Lassiter does, I can skip forward to tomorrow. Edwards first thing I assume?

OOC: What's the potentiality of in some way stemming Lassie's issue?

OOC: What's the potentiality of in some way stemming Lassie's issue?
OOC: Given his knowledge of Chemistry and Biology Lassiter would know the odds of curing this are low. Only Blix is working on it at the moment.

Finn observes Lassiter lost in thought. "Hey Dr. Blix, can you spare a moment? Lassiter has some personal questions."

To the chief, he says "Let's give them a little medical privacy. Besides, we've had few chances to talk and I wanted to circle back to you sooner than later. Since we're working together now, maybe you could tell me what your own investigations have come up with. I mean, to the extent you're comfortable..."

Finn tries to lead the chief away from the lab.

"Of course" says Blix "I think we've learned all we can from our mystery cyborg in there anyway"

Blix takes Lassiter back to her lab.

"I looked over your medical profile while trying to see if there was anything I could do. Of course that was linked to your general profile, so I saw you're not entirely ignorant of the difficulties here.

I did however sequester this immuno-booster"

She present Lassiter with a syringe containing a blue liquid.

"Jovian tech, we have very few in stock, but it will probably keep you going a bit longer. Maybe cure it, but that depends on whatever this virus actually is"

The chief walks with Finn away from the lab.

"Shah, while we walk and before you head to get some rest, tell me one thing..." he glances around and gestures to the personnel forming Finn's guard to back off for a second. To his own surprise they don't budge.

"Sorry Sir, you know the drill" one says.

The chief continues "...hmmm, quite a change in who you're taking orders from. Fine, well Shah what I wanted to ask. That 'thing' you met. Be honest. Is it an alien? Not Jovian tech?"

Fine, well Shah what I wanted to ask. That 'thing' you met. Be honest. Is it an alien? Not Jovian tech?
"I can't say anything with certainty as of yet. But there are two things that make me suspect it is. First, the Inner Way has supposedly founded their cult around this thing. Of course, you can't trust zealots, but there it was, right where the founder is said to have met it.

"Second, if the Jovian cartels can create a sentient teleporting monster...well, I feel like we'd be living in a different kind of world already. There's no evidence that they technology itself has a biological element, so it would be quite a feat to put all these things together in one package." Finn concludes.

"I don't know, chief. It seems like it would almost require more extraordinary circumstances for Jovian tech to explain all that than an alien. But what do you think? And what would you want to do if it is?"

"I don't know, chief. It seems like it would almost require more extraordinary circumstances for Jovian tech to explain all that than an alien. But what do you think? And what would you want to do if it is?"
He looks deeply worried.

"I've been coming to a similar conclusion. I think Shah...something like that...it isn't a case of what we want to do. Too much hinges on its intents"

He looks around.

"Get some rest, then rip into that Edwards jackass in the morning. I'll be watching. Eager to see what he reveals"

OOC: Smith Smith I'll take Lassie going to the next scene so however you want to convey the conclusion of meeting with Blix is fine with me. Either a post or an OOC summary.

OOC: The next day...

Finn and Lassiter are escorted into the police station's brig the following morning after a decent breakfast. Finn's heavy duty guard attract plenty of stares and gawks as he makes his way through the small office that forms the center of the police station. They then head down some stairs into a two story prison complex.

Finn estimates at most 30-40 cells looking around and half are empty. Once again he gets a few looks, this time from the prisoners.

"Had to put him at the back. A violent cultish lunatic is a bit more heavy duty than most of the guys here" the Chief says leading the pair to a cell at the back of the complex.

As they approach Edwards swings around with a shit eating grin.

"Shah and the Marshall. No surprise" he says, putting down a book he had been reading.

OOC: Basic look is this, obviously with just one guy in the cell. Also guards aren't robots. He has leg restraints on.

OOC: I missed the other posts, but Lassie would have applied the stim and thanked Blix in a respectful manner, and offered to get her dinner and drinks in some small recompense.

Lassie nods towards Edwards. "How are you finding your new quarters?"

OOC: Lassie is looking for mental strain on Edwards, signs of him cracking.

Lassie nods towards Edwards. "How are you finding your new quarters?"

OOC: Lassie is looking for mental strain on Edwards, signs of him cracking.
Edwards looks fairly unperturbed and simply glances up and down at Lassiter.

"Makes my research a little slower. Though it's good practice thinking things out in your head rather than always dumping everything on a computer. Keeps you focused on the fundamentals"

Finn turns to Lassiter with a bored expression.

"Let's not take too long. I still have a lot of packing."

Turning his attention to Edwards, Finn speaks.

"Hey. I hope you don't mind if we ask a few questions. Let me catch you up a little, first. I don't know if you have a lawyer or someone getting you the latest news."

Finn pauses for a beat in case Edwards interjects. Then, he continues.

"Anyway, we found quite the trove of data between the Inner Way sanctum and Renner's head. Coombs was a lot more cooperative when we showed him footage of Cantos' experiments. We uncovered the process in her lab and Coombs was able to fashion a kind of...variation?

"I can't say I followed the entire explanation. Maybe someone else can give you the technical explanation. Anyway, the way he explained it, she's now kind of...cut-off. Inhabiting some kind of fully-disconnected timespace. It's a loop, but not a loop. Does that make any sense? Heck, maybe it's over your head, too! That Dr. Coombs is smarter than he looks.

OOC: Side note - maybe we should ask Coombs if he can do something like that...

"The long and the short of it is that we don't have to worry about your boss anymore, but as a side-effect, we don't have her around to interrogate. But you're still with us.

"So I don't know if that's a bit of a blow or not. I understand if you don't want to talk to us since we're the guys who took you down. We're headed back off Titan by the end of the day. A long trip for a short case! It's all probably pretty sudden for you.

"Anywho, I have a couple of gaps I'd love to fill in for my report, if you are in the talking mood. Let me run them by you...
  • How and when did you get involved?
  • What was the role of the Jovians?
  • How were you supposed to deliver that bioweapon?
  • How did the thing in the sanctum react to your work?
  • How did you trick the Jovians?
  • What was Cantos' ultimate plan?"
Finn delivers the interrogation in an off-hand and casual manner, almost approaching friendliness. The implication, he intends, being that Edwards is entirely unthreatening and almost beneath his concern.

Edwards expression hardens as he listens to Finn.

At this point he then takes out a polished mirror from his pocket and looks at it for a bit, before putting it back.

After listening to the questions you can see he's not exactly worried, but thinking. At the very least he is taking this more seriously.

"Alright Shah. I'll speak to you and the Marshall alone. Turn off the cameras and get your guard and the chief to step back"

"Alright Shah. I'll speak to you and the Marshall alone. Turn off the cameras and get your guard and the chief to step back"
"Oh, I don't know Edwards. You're already telling me so much."

Finn glances at Edwards' little compact. "Mirror, mirror, who's the most delusional one of all? Let me ask you, Edwards: whatever you're planning to do, is it worth dying for? Can you be teleported back to life? How does that work?

"Look, if you don't want to tell us anything, that's fine. But come on...at least tell us about the Jovians. You don't owe them anything, and if we let them get to you now, you won't be part of the big magical apotheosis, when it comes. You want that? Be useful to us for five seconds and we'll keep you in solitary. If you're not useful to anyone, I don't see the point of spending all these resources."
