Also, it's not itself that remarkable, the cover of Warpworld had a deep influence on my roleplaying for many, many years. The system was dreadful. It takes "overcomplicated" to a whole new level, the setting was the mess, but the illustrations spoke to me.
Could not agree more - my attempts to run it for RPG newbies in college probably destroyed more potential gamers than anything else. It did introduce my favorite slang term for elves, Keebs.

Couple of random pics I got ages ago for inspiration for a setting I never quite finished or followed through about alien and surreal world-hopping adventures set in a world made up of pocket dimensions...

Inspiration for central cite of spires in that setting. Not quite how I envisioned it, but similar feel and elements.

Architecture feel for that city (mix of this and above)...

A hint of Rodney Matheus for aesthetic...

Could go on for ever with Rodney Matheus, but you get the idea (hopefully).

EDIT/PS: Some pics wouldn't load, so had to upload.

This piece by Jean Giraud always made me want to run some kind of science-fantasy game that's a mishmash of Dying Earth and Heavy Metal. As for the system I originally thought DCC RPG would be a good fit, but these days I think I'd use Mythras: take the sandestin magic system in Lyonesse sprinkle in some Luther Arkwright psychic powers and/or some M-Space ships and firearms.

This is the image that encapsulates the campaign I have in my head that I can't quite get out: DqTsPiiXgAADxYD.jpg It has been clunking around in there for years. There have been many iterations on paper, never run. I love the ruins in the McBride Rolemaster covers. I want a fantasy megalithic Petra, replete with demons and undead, full of the artifacts that brought the civilization to ruin. My current iteration is called "The Well of 10,000 Souls". Long ago, a king sought immortality (nod to Numenor). To that end, he engineered a massive human sacrifice that of course went horribly awry, opening a portal to the Pales (the Rolemaster Demon realms, I love that name), out of which spewed forth legions of demons and undead, who slew all they found, leaving the civilization in ruins. This portal became known as the Well of 10,000 Souls, and is the source of all the regional asshattery. Most of the demons and undead returned to their own plane, being bored due to lack of prey, but some stayed behind to rule their new kingdom. The Well stands open, a source of new horrors from time to time, and also being a perpetual threat, as no one knows if the horrors will return in force one day. Derivative, I know, but I love that kind of :crap:.

Ah, so that's where "keebs" is coming from:devil:?

I think I heard it once and suggested replacing it with "kebabs". I heard the Dark Lord nodded approvingly upon hearing of my suggestion, reportedly during lunch:skeleton:.

For what it's worth, I like the elevator pitch and would give it a go. You should finish it.
Aw, thanks! I've actually been looking for a system to use for it. Ordinarily I'd use Rolemaster or its derivatives but I'm kinda flummoxed. I'm looking for medium crunch with a cool way to incorporate the discovery of ancient magic. I'm inspired by the Arcane Companion from Rolemaster or Talislanta's Archaen Codex. Looking at Novus and Wayfarers right now.

Sadly the game is a bit … dull

Sorry to hear it fell flat for you. It's hitting the spot for me upon reading it. The character traits and moral codes reflect the genre. The art and graphic design ooze enough flavor to keep me inspired and in the right mindset.

The card resolution mechanics seem cool. The meta game aspect of counting cards as a method of weighing risk enhances the mood for me. Optional rules for playing blackjack or using poker hands seem like they would work really well to combine both mechanical and story weight in certain situations.

That image is so, so disturbing. I am not sure I am tough enough to play in that game.
Yeah, that's a game that gonna get seriously dark. Reminds me of this...

We're gonna need shotguns...lots of shotguns.

What do you call this genre of art?

1970's Crazyass Sci-Fantasy?
Science Fiction cover art circa 1960-1980?

Man, this movie premise is easily in one form or another 20% of all Cyberpunk adventures. People tend to miss this one when they talk about foundational Cyberpunk works, but it was massively influential on Anime as well as Maximum Mike himself. It's Neo-Noir with an emphasis on visual style and music as much as the gritty, underworld characters.

Let's play it out with some Ellen Aim and the Attackers...

Not drawn art, but perhaps art nonetheless. Actually for a continuation of a campaign interrupted by the plague.

...and it doesn't want to process the image link nicely. Ah well.
