The Chronovisor: the "Time Machine" Hidden In The Vatican

From the 1960s until his death in the '90s, Father Pellegrino Ernetti, a Benedictine monk, scientist and exorcist, claimed that he helped create a time machine called the Chronovisor, which he used to observe the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.



The Chronovisor is said to be a device that gives the user the ability to see through time. Though the existence of the Chronovisor has never been proven, a 2002 book by Vatican priest Father François Brune claims it not only exists, it was used to view the crucifiction.

According to Brune, the Chronovisor was developed by Father Pellegrino Ernetti, a Benedictine monk. Ernetti allegedly kept the device secret until the early 1960s when he confided in Brune and told him that 12 scientists, including famed physicist Enrico Fermi and former Nazi scientist Wernher von Braun, helped him to build it.

Made of cathode rays, antennae, and metals that received sound and light signals on all wavelengths, the Chronovisor purportedly allowed the team of scientists to document events of the past. According to Ernetti, the device had several antennae, three of which were made of “mysterious” metals that picked up sound and lightwaves across their entire respective spectrums. A “direction finder” on the device was allegedly tuned into the specific era one wanted to view, while a screen displayed it and a recording device captured footage.

The Chronovisor was thus more of a window into the past than a time machine. Ernetti said it worked like a television, catching echoes from days long gone that had been “floating” in space — and he claimed to have seen some astonishing things.



Ernetti recounted how he witnessed Marcus Tullius Cicero’s speech to the Roman senate in 63 B.C. “His gestures, his intonation,” Ernetti effused. “How powerful they were! What flights of oratory.”

From the founding of the Roman Empire to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Ernetti alleged that he and his team had taken a peek into some of the most important events in the Bible.

On May 2, 1972, an Italian publication called La Domenica del Corriere published his claim. Titled “A Machine That Photographs The Past Has Finally Been Invented,” the article covered Ernetti’s shocking statements for all of Italy to read.

Alongside the admittedly dubious claims, the magazine published an alleged photograph from the Chronovisor that Ernetti claimed captured the Romans crucifying Jesus Christ.



Ernetti maintained until his death in 1994 that the machine had been hidden away by the Vatican in order to safeguard it from falling into the wrong hands. Interestingly, the Vatican decreed in 1988 that “anyone using an instrument of such characteristics would be excommunicated.”

Shortly before he died, Ernetti wrote an open letter adamantly reiterating that the device was real. He claimed that “Pope Pius XII forbade us to disclose any details about this device because the machine was very dangerous. It can restrain the freedom of man.”

Most of my life--certainly since moving to the US in the late '90s--whenever something spooky or scary happens (power outage, unknown wildlife encounter at night, creepy sounds from the basement... or in one case, what sounded like rats in the walls that turned out to be pieces of a house collapsing!) and then the banal, mundane reality of whatever was terrifying becomes apparent, I'm always more than a little disappointed that it wasn't a Cthuluvian beastie or other some such yog-sothothery.

Historical Book Burnings

I. The Burying of The Scholars
For over 500 years, Ancient China experienced a golden age of writing and ideas. Despite the various wars and power struggles from 770 to 221 BC, scholars managed to come up with some of the most fascinating philosophies of all times, including Confucianism and Taoism. Then, in 221 BC, the wars stopped, and all power was consolidated under Emperor Qin. Qin and his advisors didn’t trust the scholars, and, starting in 213 BC, ordered thousands of priceless books burned. All history books were destroyed so that Qin could write his own version where he came out looking the best. This carried on for three years, until Qin decided to bury over 1000 scholars alive in addition burning all their works. No one knows how much irreplaceable information was lost during this time.

II. Nalanda
For 600 years, Nalanda was one of the best universities in the world. Located in India, it attracted students from as far away as Greece who came to study in one of the greatest libraries the world had ever seen. It extended over three buildings that were up to nine stories high. The hundreds of thousands of books inside those buildings covered subjects as wide ranging as grammar, logic, literature, astrology, astronomy, and medicine. But many of the most precious texts were among the most important in Buddhism, and those religious tomes may have been what Bakhtiyar Khilji and his Muslim army were intent on destroying when they sacked the university in 1193. According to legend, there were so many books that they burned for three months. The loss of the religious texts effectively ended Buddhism as a major religion in India for hundreds of years.

III. Maya Codices
Despite not actually having predicted the end of the world in 2012, the Maya were a relatively advanced civilization. By 100 BC they had a system of writing, and for the next 1400 years they recorded their history as well as astronomical observations and calendar calculations. Then the Spanish showed up. For three months in 1562, Spanish friars tried to Christianize the Maya through torture. In order that no one could ever return to the old ways, they also burned all samples of Mayan writing they could find. Said Bishop De Landa, "We found a large number of books in these [Mayan] characters and, as they contained nothing in which were not to be seen as superstition and lies of the devil, we burned them all, which they regretted to an amazing degree, and which caused them much affliction." Today only three of these works remain.
