Real World Inspirations for Fantasy Locales

Not sure if I posted this yet but I went to see Danvers State Hospital, which is now an apartment complex, sometime around early October. It is two towns over from me. This is what inspired Arkham Asylum. These pictures don't quite capture the scale of it how the buildings look like they are engulfing you when you stand in front of it (also many of the historic elements were destroyed to when it was sold to developers). There is a whole display though that gives the history. Something I wasn't anticipating when I first saw it was how remote it feels (it is in Danvers which isn't exactly wilderness, but the area surrounding it is all trees and hills). A lot of red brick buildings in the North Shore have this gothic inspired look. A number of churches where I live look pretty similar.

Not a location, per se, but I knew a group of dudes who named every ship in their D&D games after porn stars. The Amber Lynn, The Trinity Loren, and so on.

Perhaps not a location so much as a state of mind... but you can get to fantasy from enough of it:
