I think ebay would only take it seriously if WoTC stepped in and claimed an issue, and I assume they don't think it's worth the time to bother. I think if anyone pays for those things, knowing full well they could easily grab an illegal pdf and print them themselves if they don't care about copyright, that's on the buyer.

The funny thing is there's a listing going on at the same time as this for a still sealed copy where the seller of that one is only asking $300 with no takers. But this person thinks their opened copy is $450.

For reference, it looks like they've been selling in this opened condition for about $70 to $80 lately.

Not providing a link, but came across a listing today claiming it was for the 1992 printing of the Marvel Super Heroes Advanced Set. Except the images of the box were clearly of the common 1986 version. Not that the price was any more ridiculous than what some ask for the Advanced set, but I thought the listing was pretty disingenuous.

the advanced set has really shot up in just the last 3 years. As late as 2017 it was easy to find a copy for $20-30 new

The KOTOR guide alone had jacked up prices even DURING the life of SAGA Edition. It was one of the few books from that edition I never had because it was hella expensive if you didn't buy it on release.

I got lucky and got mine on RPG.net from a guy who REFUSED to sell above cover...but would only take money orders and not PayPal.

In fact, I managed to pay cover or less for my entire run of Saga Edition.

If it’s an upscale area they’re used to paying a “wealth tax”, which is the amount of extra money you’re willing to pay to only have to deal with wealthy people in stores and restaurants.

No basically. Plarail is more common in Japan than Lego in the West and these are standard sets. Maybe there is some minor detail I'm missing though.

EDIT: I can get both to Ireland from stores in Tokyo for ~$80, so these are either ripoff artists or some typo/automation error

Most of this stuff is available in PDF form these days. The Rules Cyclopedia is even available as a POD... no idea how the quality compares to an original one, though.

I bought the RC in POD in both soft and hardcover copies, and I can vouch that the quality is excellent. Truly beautiful books. I'm with you about the cost vs. nostalgia factor. As much as I would love to own some of these older books, I wouldn't really use them so it would be money down the drain.

For me it really depends on how rare and hard the item is to get. Way too many forget or ignore that one can get many items from Drivethrurpg for a much cheaper price. Dragonlance adventures is going for 72$ plus about 20 with shipping at least on EBay.ca. I can get the same book with PDF at 18.50 on Drivethrurpg.

Temple of Elemental Evil not even in mint to good condition going for 100$ or more while I can get a reprint for 19.50$ with shipping. Sure the hardcore collector or those with OCD might complain it's a scan and not the original. Why the hell should I pay 3-4 times the amount when I can get it cheaper. Frankly it's cheaper much cheaper to buy a legal copy of the PDF and have the local print shop print out a copy. The sellers and some hardcore collectors refuse to acknowledge that supply and demand in the era of PDFs really no longer exists imo.

If sellers are going to charge the big bucks I expect it to be in very good quality. Not a beat-up copy whose pages are yellowed and the binding held with equally yellow scotch tape and expect me to pay money for it. It's one of the reasons why I stopped going to my LGS the new owners became greedy and before when most of their used D&D stock was priced between 10-25$ suddenly became 35-40$. All because it was 1E and 2E stock. Most were in good condition except they were trying to push Greyhawk Adventures and Oriental adventures 1E beat-up yellowed dog hardcover for 35-40$ are you kidding me. If I am not saving from buying used in store I will buy from Amazon and get to pick and chose the quality of what I purchase.

Some people treat collecting the original printings a hobby unto itself. I wouldn't pay the money, but I don't have a problem with it. I have similar OCD issues with my book collection. For example, I only by Moorcock in particular printings and all the books in a given series need to match on my shelf. Having to shelve a mix of editions, paperbacks and trades gives me the pip.
