Here's a concept for getting varied results on a die roll that I will probably never use as it falls into the hated category of "stupid dice tricks."
The dice are rolled on a target in the center of the table. It may just have a bullseye and rings or it might be broken into quadrants or even sectors. The part of the target the die lands in determines additional effects like and, or, but, if, and while. The player may orient the target before rolling but the dice must be thrown into the target not from within it. The target could be a dice tray with edges and bouncing off the edge might also be a requirement.
