I received an e-mail message this morning from Free League, announcing that they've partnered with a website/app called RPGMatch to help people find games. You have to fill out a survey upon creating an account so they can get to better match you with people. Just thought that I'd mention it as it's another alternative to Roll20, Demiplane, and right here to find fellow gamers for your games.

Got the same email. It sounds interesting. It might lead folks to find people who want to play more than DnD and its variants. lol It will be interesting to see what happens with this say a year down the line. It does sound like it's more for in person gaming as an aside. Unless I'm reading the site incorrectly?

No, it's for both real-life gaming and VTT. One of the seventeen questions asked at account creation is, "Do you use a VTT, and if so which ones?" and gives you a long list of VTTs to check off of.

You're also specifically asked for which games you'd be interested in playing and/or GMing. There's a lot of games listed, but there's also a lot of games missing.

I made a profile. Considering that I put that I’m only interested in playing in-person and all of my favorite games are 30+ years old I’m suspicious that their algorithm apparently matched me to a bunch of people at 90%+. I suspect it’s only looking at your available times and the play-style preferences (combat, exploration, etc).

So just like those online dating sites there immediately after signing up, you get swamped by messages from hot women.

There's a lot of people who put their game preference to: "I will play anything!" That's probably a part of it. Now whether or not that they will actually play anything... Also, age seems to be a big part of it as well. I've found that they match me the most with other gamers 45 and older, and lower with younger gamers which is the vast majority of people on the site.

Yep, I had that sudden "oh you dumbass, it could be used for VTT as well" moment while out exercising this morning.

Jeepers, Where did they get their RPG list.
(and did they have to include THAT game)

No way to re-order the list by % match.
No way to actually change a profile and communicate preferences other than their pre-set selections. Hrmmmm

90% match based on 7 hour timezone difference and ZERO matching games.

Whatever the algorithm is, it's bollocks.

Yeah, this app is worthless. I created my profile because I’m currently running a 1E AD&D game in a local store that has room for more players and thought this might be a way to potentially find some, but there’s no way to actually mention that, and all of the people that I’m supposedly a high match with are located thousands of miles away and mostly aren’t interested in the same games (but I guess are maybe available at the same times? I put that I’m available afternoons which I guess is matching me with people available in the evening on the east coast?).

If I can figure out how to do so I’m going to try to delete my profile because it’s obvious nothing worthwhile will ever come from this and sooner or later their database will probably get hacked (or sold).

Yeah, its kinda useless since they don't seem to have any way to sort by distance. So its difficult for me to find anyone who's nearby... or, its just confirming my suspicion that there isn't anyone nearby. :-/

Had a brother go and for some reason there are filters *above the fold*. I had to scroll up to get them. That’s a weird UI choice.

But what now? I mean I understand it’s an MVP but frankly my mate could have coded this in hours. Why is free league throwing their weight behind it?

And as an MVP it’s missing the most important part: Viable.

I just like the idea of MAD TV's skit "Lowered Expectations" and this gamer matching service. :clown: It's because I have naughty, humorous thoughts... dank meme-like thoughts.::honkhonk:

MOAR! :gooselove:

Not just Free League, but Chaosium as well. Why? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I had a 90% match with some guy who lives in an igloo up in the North Pole.

Gimme a break!
Might wanna give it a second chance. That town is so small (and adjacent to a military base) that there's a good chance you'd find its someone willing to do a call-in game at almost any time of day.

Edit: also the hella ugly igloo has been abandoned for years and isn't in North Pole anyways. It never really got off the ground as a touristy hotel and the locals all fount it really tacky.
