A play by post Stars Without Number living world adventure, posting daily since August 2017. Join over one hundred players in a persistent living world. You are joining more than just a game, but also will be a member of an active, friendly, and welcoming community that prides itself on providing a safe space adventure game for all to enjoy.

There is absolutely no prior experience in Stars Without Number or TTRPGs in general needed, and one of the greatest joys our community has is teaching new people how to play the game.

------

Six years have passed since The Scream, a psionic disaster responsible for killing trillions across the galaxy in one swift stroke. Humanity and several alien races have clung to life, and are now forced to continue without virtually any of their psychic citizens or psi-tech industries that developed around their special talents. Deprived of the instant cross-galactic communication and major jump gates, this new era has plunged most inhabited worlds into an all-consuming, isolating Silence. Several fledgling stellar polities have arisen from this Silence, with the goal to once again re-unite these lost worlds into their respective spheres of influence.

This section of the galaxy has recently vanquished a fearsome race of flesh molding aliens, endured raids by an empire of slavers, banded together to halt the ambitions of an evil mining megacorporation, and now face their largest test in the form of another unified band of political states to the galactic north.

Seven Polities (PC run and owned) work in an open galactic sandbox both with and against each other to accomplish their goals and ensure they have enough strength to stand the test of time. Frictions grow, and former friends now look upon one another’s borders with a mixture of fear and desire, testing cross-polity friendships and forcing many to ask just where their true loyalties lie. Neutral factions have also arisen, offering those brave enough to adventure among the stars a unique chance for reward and opportunity.

Players work as agents of the polity they choose during character creation- each thematically different and dealing with their own unique sets of adventures. All characters have an equal voice in the decisions polities make as the game months pass, regardless of time spent playing, or time spent as an observing (but non participating) community member.

Also happy to answer questions here or messaging me at Nekosmash#7785 on discord, if you don't want to necessarily join a new server just to find out about the game.

That's great! If there's anything I can answer please let me know.

Stars without Number uses 2d6 for skill checks. Combat is very similar to 5e, using a D20 and needing to meet or exceed an ascending armor class to hit. One of the things I like most about the system is level 0 in a skill (giving you neither a penalty or bonus to the associated check) means a professional competency in the skill- meaning you will not need to take skill checks for routine uses of it

For example, someone with Pilot 0 would not need to roll skill checks for taking off, landing, or basic maneuvering in clear conditions, but doing the same thing in a storm, or under antiaircraft fire would require a check. Skill ranks go beyond 0 (a competent professional) , to a maximum of 4 (one of the best in the sector) , and skill rank allowed at a given time is related to character level, so it really does avoid a lot of the min-max pitfalls of other systems.

Are there any characters you are against making? Such as teenage prodigies/geniuses (who are unrealistic, yes)?

Nothing from anime (not the vibe of the game) , nothing from Warhammer or warhammer inspired (since we are intentionally not playing a warhammer 40k rpg) , and we have a standing rule against NSFW themes in general, so it seems obvious- but I'm going to say it anyway- that this especially applies even more so if you're trying to play a teenager or younger character.
