"Shields up," responds Mr. Ploog.

Remember: no one can beam down or up as long as the shields are up.

"On screen, sir," says Lt. Chopra.

The viewscreen abruptly changes from an exterior view of the Klingon vessel to the steamy, seemingly poorly lighted bridge, centering on the swarthy, toothy glower of the ship's commander as he practically spits, "I am Captain Krawz of the Klingon Imperial Navy, commander of the Sword of Retribution, Earthers! You are hereby ordered to leave Klingon space or face the consequences!"

Don't forget that although the Organian Peace Treaty, unilaterally imposed upon the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire in 2267, is still presumably in effect, no one knows the range and extent of the Organians' ability to enforce it or whether it even applies outside the proscribed Neutral Zone: http://www.st-minutiae.com/articles/treaties/organian.html

Ta'kar will scan the door to see if there are any hidden control mechanisms, or powered mechanical actuators. He will also see if scanning through the glass will be more successful in determining the contents of the structure.
Sinclair turns to address Conway, in a voice loud enough to be heard by the entire Team. "Captain, I'm picking up residual Berthold radiation, probably from a decades-past event. Without protective equipment, I recommend not staying any longer than possible. The danger isn't immediate, but the less time we spend exposed, the better. Any longer than 24 hours, and we're likely to suffer from exposure to the radiation."
I'm giving Supervisor194 Supervisor194 and Toric Toric a chance to post before I respond to Ta'kar's efforts.

"Noted, Doctor," Captain Conway says as he walks up to Mr. Ta'kar. "So, Mr. Ta'kar, have you found us a key that will open these doors? Are you able to detect anything inside?"

"Captain. The structure is still blocking my Tricorder, but I may be more successful if I focus the scan on the glass portions of the door. Presumably they are not as dense as a material as the walls, and may prove more accommodating. Key Captain? This door appears to have a far more sophisticated closing mechanism than a simple tumbler lock."

ooc: one on one can go much faster than a group - if you ever need to pause this part to let the surface catch up, it's cool.

Remember: no one can beam down or up as long as the shields are up. - which is why that ensign to the surface may be the last communication for while. Or ever if I get the ship blown up.

He thinks to himself Crap on a cracker. The captain should be here and he should be in the engine room finding a way to secretly power the weapons without it showing on scan. Ok Dave, he says in his head, gotta be quick, can't be too submissive or too aggressive. Either might result in an attack.

Commander Travis eyes get big and he looks very serious and taken aback. "You don't say? "

Travis takes a moment to look to his left, beyond the screen view. "Psychic Officer Trandel scan the planet. Do you see the Klingons' name on it?"

After a pause, Travis continues, "Negative, huh." Travis looks back to the screen and shrugs.

"Greetings to the Sword of Retribution. I am Commander Travis of Federation ship Excalibur. I'm afraid that I'm not aware of any treaties that make this region of space any more yours than it is anyone else's. I cannot comply with your demand unless you can transmit documents proving your ownership."

Lt. McLennan nods at Groth and Weathers to take up positions flanking the door but watching their backs so that nothing surprises the group from behind. He then stands near the Captain awaiting further orders and letting those more expert than he figure out how to open the door.

"Do what you can, Mr. Ta'kar, we need to find a way inside this building."
"Understood Captain. Scanning now."

OOC: Do I need/get to make another roll to determine what's inside?
If you want to spend 5 minutes recalibrating your tricorder to take into account the new circumstances, you can make another attempt at obtaining and interpreting readings with the same % chance as before.

One thing you can verify now that you're closer is that the dome is a focus for the energy emissions. Without additional information, your best conjecture is that the power source lies within the building and the energy is radiated outward via the dome.

Groth and Weathers hold their phasers at the ready in case anything dangerous should emerge.

I'll slow it down if we get too far ahead of what's happening on the planet. Right now we can assume this is taking place simultaneously.

"Enough of your word games, Earther! If it weren't for the accursed Organians, I would blast your rust bucket of a starship to smithereens! Be warned, little man: if you interfere with our landing party even the Organians will understand when we fire upon you!"

Ensign Chen, at the science station just behind you on your right, remarks in a barely audible tone, "Their shields are up but their weapons are not charged, sir."

Travis nods to the Klingon captain. "Understood. Your concern for your crew is commendable. Unless you have more to say, we shall return to our scientific surveys."

If the Klingons don't respond within 5 seconds, Travis has Chopra cut the signal.

ooc: have more but waiting to make sure the Klingons are done for now.

ooc: Let me just say I didn't see the proposal coming. I guess that means one of the happy couple will die before the wedding.

Just realized I should have been using spoilers for the landing party as well.
OOC: Ta'kar will spend the time required. I roll a 45.
Tricorder readings are imperfect due to the obstructive composition of the tinted "glass," but seem to indicate lifeforms--you judge likely humanoid--within the domed building, but subsurface. There is also a tremendous power source some 30 meters down. Presumably the structure extends some indeterminate distance underground, which would only be logical if the surface of the planet had to be abandoned sometime in the recent past due to Berthold radiation. You detect no hidden control mechanisms or powered mechanical actuators for the door; as far as your tricorder can determine, the only method of access appears to be the curved bronze handles.
Ensign Groth, hovering near the right of Lt. Commander Ta'kar, snorts impatiently and suggests in his hoarse voice, "Captain, surely our phasers can blast this door off its hinges!"

"SIlver-tongued devil! You Earthers infuriate me!" shouts Krawz. "You speak without saying anything!" The viewscreen then reverts to the vista of D-7 battlecruiser seeming very small against the backdrop of the planet below.

"The Klingons terminated the transmission at their end,"observes Lt. Chopra.

On the viewscreen, Sword of Retribution visibly turns and slightly adjusts its orbit.

"Commander, the Klingon vessel is attempting to get in line with Excalibur and follow our trajectory from behind," grumbles Ensign Ploog, the Tellarite navigator. "Shall I plot a different orbit?"

Lt. Vonnegut looks back expectantly from the helm station, his hands poised at the console.

McLennan looks at Ensign Groth with a smirk. "And surely the Captain is well aware of our phaser's capabilities without being reminded, Ensign."

"Captain. I am able to penetrate the structure's walls. I am detecting humanoid life forms, however I cannot determine an exact count. There is a vast power source eminating from 30 metres below ground, and it would appear that this structure extends deeply below the surface of the planet. It would seem that this dome serves as some type of conduit, perhaps an amplifier, for the energy that I am detecting.
Captain, this planet is not abandoned as we first thought. I theorise that the native population fled underground to escape the effects of the Berthold Radiation."

OOC: Was it ever mentioned that the door was actually locked? I just realized that no one's actually tried pulling or pushing one of those bronze handles yet.

Crap. While the ship could fire some weapons directly behind, it couldn't bring all of its weapons to bear. He couldn't let the Klingons gain an easy advantage in case it came to shooting.

"Good idea Ensign. Lt. Vonnegut make random course changes as you see fit as long as you keep in the vicinity of the planet. Keep the Klingons on their toes. But don't play chicken with them."

Enough diplomacy. It made Travis feel awkward like a family gathering with people you rarely see and don't much care for. Now there were things in his bailiwick that he could do while staying on the bridge.

ooc: I'm not sure of command structure. Does the head of communications have others trained in communications under them? I'm assuming so.

"Lt. Chopra designate a subordinate to monitor communications coming from the Klingon ship. You and I have a bigger task. We need to re-establish communication with the captain so they're not ambushed by over eager Klingons."

Travis sets about working at a station adjacent to Chopra's so they can cooperate. Travis mumbles along as they work, both to Chopra and himself at the same time.

"So, the captain's in a pickle. I'm guessing the Klingons did the same thing we did - got a transmission and sent a team to investigate. If the teams run into each other and anyone gets antsy, they're gonna fight."

"I hope Ensign Wong beamed down ok and made contact. Now, if we drop shields to beam anyone else, the Klingons will think we're attacking their away team and will fire with our shields down. If we send a shuttle, same thing, and they shoot the shuttle. Our only hope to help the captain is to establish a tight beam link. Are you thinkin' along the same lines?"

OOC: Was it ever mentioned that the door was actually locked? I just realized that no one's actually tried pulling or pushing one of those bronze handles yet.
Here's what has been said about the doors so far:
At that location you can see a large round building topped with a bronze-colored dome. There is an obvious point of entry facing you at the front of the building: a large archway with glass doors.
The entrance to the building in an archway with a pair of glass doors. The archway itself is about 6 meters at its apex; the doors, based simply on their dimensions, appear to have been made for the use of humanoids; the glass is tinted to the point of being opaque. There is no obvious locking mechanism, keypad, or control panel, but there is a curved bronze handle built into each door.
You detect no hidden control mechanisms or powered mechanical actuators for the door; as far as your tricorder can determine, the only method of access appears to be the curved bronze handles.

All department head have subordinates as there are three 8-hour shifts on the bridge, as well as other relief personnel and specialists.

Lt. Chopra summons Ensign Glenn Jones, a junior communications officer who usually covers the "night" shift, to relieve her at her station. He reports to the bridge so eagerly he's still adjusting his tunic when he exits the turbolift.
Travis sets about working at a station adjacent to Chopra's so they can cooperate. Travis mumbles along as they work, both to Chopra and himself at the same time.

Lt. Chopra says, "We could certainly try it, sir. Ensign Jones is technically adept and can make the proper adjustments for a tight beam transmission. However, that requires us to focus all energy on one point and hope the Captain is still in the same general location he beamed down to."

Ensign Jones, a boyish communications officer fresh out of Star Fleet Academy, with brown hair long enough to abut regulations without actually violating them, states in his cockney accent, "I can ready it now, Commander Travis." Then, fidgeting with his transdator earpiece, he reports, "Lt. Weaver in the Transporter Room is asking when we're going to lower our shields so 'e can beam Ensign Wong down to deliver your message to Captain Conway. Shall I let 'im know we'll cop a flower pot* with the Klingons if we try it? 'E must be Brahms an' Liszt!**"

"Security," Conway says waving his hand towards the door, "stand ready. Maybe whoever is inside doesn't believe in locks."
Captain Conway reaches out, grabs one of the door handles and tries to open the door.

OOC: Should we be putting the landing party stuff in Spoiler quotes as well?

OOC: Should we be putting the landing party stuff in Spoiler quotes as well?
Let's do.
"Security," Conway says waving his hand towards the door, "stand ready. Maybe whoever is inside doesn't believe in locks."
Captain Conway reaches out, grabs one of the door handles and tries to open the door.
If Lt. Commander Ta'kar acknowledged emotions at all, he would likely feel chagrin as Captain Conway opens the unlocked door outward by its handle.

Through the doorway, those of the landing party near enough see a large white vestibule of polished white surfaces--apparently some sort of marble-like stone--and a tall desk or workstation to the left before a corridor leading to what look like four turbolift doors, two on the left and two on the right. The corridor dead-ends at a wall with what you presume to be directory board mounted on it: the script is alien to you but the purpose seems clear.

At the workstation you see the upper half of a robot with flashing red diodes above a grille: together they give its head the aspect of a humanoid face with eyes and a mouth. Antennae on either side of its head seem to give off sporadic tiny blue electric sparks.

The vestibule is otherwise spartan and empty. Nothing more can be seen from your present position outside the building.

Lt. McLennan looks to Groth and Weathers. "Keep your weapons in hand but lowered. No sense provoking anyone unless necessary." He then steps inside ahead of the Captain, somewhat shielding him with his own body.

"It would seem that the obvious solution is the correct one." Ta'kar responds to Conway's action. Tricorder at the ready he follows Captain in scanning the internal areas of the structure.

Once inside, Sinclair continues to scan for radiation and general environmental quality/safety...[/I]

Lt. Chopra says, "We could certainly try it, sir. Ensign Jones is technically adept and can make the proper adjustments for a tight beam transmission. However, that requires us to focus all energy on one point and hope the Captain is still in the same general location he beamed down to."

Travis raises his eyebrows to indicate that she is commsplaining tightbeam communications to an engineer.

"Lt. Weaver in the Transporter Room is asking when we're going to lower our shields so 'e can beam Ensign Wong down to deliver your message to Captain Conway. Shall I let 'im know we'll cop a flower pot* with the Klingons if we try it? 'E must be Brahms an' Liszt!**"

ooc: when you said en route to beam down, I took that to mean that Wong had beamed down.

"Crap. Tell Weaver that we missed the time window before we had to raise shields due to the appearance of a Klingon ship."

"Anyway, let's set up the beam. I'll assist. Jones, if you're more adept with this, you can take the lead while Chopra monitors the Klingon ship."

ooc: do you want a roll?

Lt. McLennan looks to Groth and Weathers. "Keep your weapons in hand but lowered. No sense provoking anyone unless necessary." He then steps inside ahead of the Captain, somewhat shielding him with his own body.
The security officers do as instructed as they cautiously enter on either flank of their chief.
"It would seem that the obvious solution is the correct one." Ta'kar responds to Conway's action. Tricorder at the ready he follows Captain in scanning the internal areas of the structure.
The robot at the desk gives off high levels of energy and reads as if it contains its own dilithium power source. The tricorder also indicates a similar power source far below ground, but on another order of magnitude. The building materials seem to be, for the most part, common enough mineral composites and metal alloys readily available on the planet through mining and refining.
Once inside, Sinclair continues to scan for radiation and general environmental quality/safety...
The material used in fabricating the structure appear to block all hazardous Berthold radiation. The air inside the building is approximately 77% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 1% argon, 0.01% carbon dioxide, and trace amounts of various other harmless gases: quite safe to breathe and approximately the same makeup as Earth's atmosphere.
Upon the entry of the landing party, the robot at the desk swivels its upper body toward you and emits a series of clicks and clacks not unlike the sound make by your own starship's computer when it is working on a problem. Then a metallic staccato voice pronounces, "Com-pat-i-ble-life-forms-you-are-wel-comed."

It raises a slender metal arm that ends in four narrow finger-like extremities and gestures toward the turbolifts. "You-will-de-scend-now," it says. Its tone is not that of a question but rather that of a statement of fact. tiny blue sparks jump from the antennae on either side of its head.

Lt. Vonnegut and Ensign Ploog collaborate to make random changes to Excalibur's orbit with the goal of befuddling the Klingons on your tail. The D-7 sticks fairly close but doesn't try to follow every move, apparently content to keep you in sight, and takes no hostile actions.
Travis raises his eyebrows to indicate that she is commsplaining tightbeam communications to an engineer.

ooc: when you said en route to beam down, I took that to mean that Wong had beamed down.
He was en route to the Transporter Room. Unfortunately the shields went up before he was able to beam down.

ooc: do you want a roll?
No, there's no need to roll. You just need to decide if there's anything in particular you want transmitted or just a general message about the Klingon starship in orbit.

"The environment in here is safe...", Sinclair says, his voice trailing off slightly at the robotic command. "...at least, as far as radiation is concerned."

Conway take a couple of cautious steps towards the robot then stops.
"Welcome...to where? What is this place?"

"According to my readings the robot is powered by dilithium, as is the complex below. This miniaturisation would suggest a highly advanced level of engineering.
Captain. Although it seems that we are 'compatible' I recommend caution until we ascertain a clearer understanding of their motives."

When Jones and he think it's ready, Travis will send a message to where the away team beamed down. He shrugs to Jones and Chopra "Better keep it short and simple in case of interference."

Travis sends the message, "Sensor interference blocks us from tracking you. Klingon D7 in orbit. Cannot risk shuttle or transporter with shields up. Klingon away team on planet, possibly near you. Respond if you can."

"Well, at least now they know the lay of the land. Not much more we can do without risking tasting disruptors. The Klingons are probably more willing to sacrifice a pawn to start a fight than we are.

McLennan shadows the Captain as he moves closer to the robot. He scans the machine to see if it has any apparent weapons or possibly any hints of hidden weapons.

The robot's eyes flash with amber light as it raises its other hand to make a "halt" gesture in your general direction and states, "You-will-come-no-clo-ser." You detect no identifiable weapons, hidden or otherwise. However, as Captain Conway and Lt. McLennan approach the robot, covered by the way security men Groth and Weathers, Lt. Commander Ta'kar's tricorder buzzes and flashes with new information.
Readings indicate the robot has put up a powerful personal force field around itself in response to the approach by your fellow officers.
Simultaneously, Captain Conway's communicator chirps to alert him to an incoming message from Excalibur.

"Commander, our transmission was received but just barely," reports Lt. Chopra. "Captain Conway and the others appear to have moved away from their landing zone."

Ensign Chen turns from the science station and adds, "Confirmed, sir. They appear to have entered a structure that is blocking further communication. It looks to be the source of the transmissions we received from the planet."

"I'll keep monitoring for a response from Captain Conway, sir," says Lt. Chopra. After a short interval, she turns to you again and says perplexedly, "Commander, the Klingons are hailing us again!"
