Wait, are you talking about Thor: Ragnarok now?

Most Disney films seem to be following the model set up by Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Which I wish they wouldn't. Humour has it's place, undercutting tragic moments isn't it.

I saw someone take it apart moment-by-moment on YouTube and it was hilariously bad.
Was that the one where they show one of the stuntmen holding back, because he made a mistake and would have 'killed' one of the main characters if he followed through? Not literally killed, of course.

It almost feels like they're afraid the dramatic parts will fall flat with the audience, so they immediately undercut it with a joke to make sure we know they're not serious if we didn't take it seriously, like they're trying to have it both ways.

Yes, that sounds like the one. I remember that bit. I wonder if no one noticed that in the dailies or they're just so lazy they couldn't do it again?

I like to imagine that part of Star Wars’ questionable duelling choreography is due to the Force. Or something.
Well, for me I don't like what I've seen of sword fights in the latter-day films because it's so over-the-top with all the wirework and Crouching Dragon, Flying Tiger silliness makes it hard for me to take it seriously. Also the editing sometimes make it hard to tell what's going on.

I don't know what you are talking about. This is very realistic...

I'm usually a bit out of step with these things. I thought Endgame was great, I also really enjoyed TLJ, and rate it equal to TFA (for different reasons better/worse), which I put barely below RotJ (Ewoks) and handily ahead of the prequel trilogy. I enjoyed Solo...but didn't really need it. (Star Trek TMP is also my favorite Trek movie.)

On the other hand, Ultron almost made me stop going to MCU movies.

TFA and TLJ just looked like a bunch of haphazardly thrown-together Star Wars-ish stuff to me. The characters, the storylines, everything. Like messy haste jobs.

I personally disagree, but opinions are like... well, you know. And who cares what I think? It is interesting to hear how other people really hated something that I felt was entirely benign. I mean that: it's enlightening.

I think the Internet just intensifies hate. I've found myself going on vicious screeds about pieces of entertainment when my actual feelings on the matter mostly just amount to "meh".

This is doubly so regarding Star Wars. I could very easily do a Plinkett-level monstrous diatribe about the direction of the franchise post mid 80s, but in the end I don't think any of the films I've seen are bad movies or lacking in entertainment value, they just ended up not meeting my expectations. And really, how could they compete with 30 years of nostalgia. Who knows what I would have thought of the original trilogy if they came out when I was in my teens or later?

My dad took me to see Star Wars in 1977. I was 4 and he was 28. I was totally enraptured and he thought it was a good movie. Age definitely plays a part in how we process these things. While fans our age were trashing the prequels, they brought in a new generation of fans. The sequels are doing the same thing.

lol, I already have so many ongoing things to write that are way more important. I started a Let's Read thread about MSH to re-excite me about Phaserip, and it worked so well, I started doing a bunch more work on the game writing and haven't gotten back to the thread yet to continue it. I abandoned my epic Zweihander review after the Zaklash put me off of it, but I still have two other RPGs I was sent to review by the authors that I haven't got to yet, and I'm also well behind on the novel I've been working on since 2013.

More than that, though, there's many posters here who are fans of the new films (including our illustrious Kermit of the Pub, Endless), and it would feel kinda mean. I did post a mini-rant way back when on The Pub once upon a time, but I haven't even seen most of the new SW films, let a lone taken the time to dissect them (after the first film in the new Trilogy I pretty much hung up my hat and said that's it for me). I could watch Rogue One or the Solo film on Netflix but just haven't bothered).

found that old rant from 2017...

I respect your views and it was a well-written rant. My feelings are not hurt....

....well...

...sniff...

That bit about Jedi dressing like Ben Kenobi when he was hiding out is great. Never even thought about that. All Jedi dress like natives of Tatooine for no reason at all. :hehe:

(But you know the 1977/1980/1983 theatrical release versions of the original movies were released on DVD a long time ago, no? I have them all.)

Ahh, internet opinions... always so loud about stuff people don't like.
I liked Endgame, TFA, and even some of TLJ. I will go see the next Marvel and Star Wars films happily, because I know what to expect and will leave the theater on a high with my wife chattering about the movie. Good enough for me.

At the time I wrote that I later found that the original films were released as special features on one edition of the special edition DVDs, but I haven't kept up with the home video releases since then. I have a wall of DVDs I never watch because streaming online is so convenient these days, but at some point I do plan to "complete" my film collection as best I can before the home video market goes the way of bookstores

You should watch Resurrection:Ertugrul on Netflix, if you like proper sword fighting. It's a long, subtitled, Turkish serial set in the 13th century and has got Turks fighting Crusaders, Mongols, Byzantines and other Turks, with excellent combat scenes.

Also the editing sometimes make it hard to tell what's going on.

Unfortunately, that's your age and I feel your pain.

I am aware. I own the movies but not on DVD. It's a delight to see a normal Sarlacc pit, Han who shoots first, no shitty CGI mini-Jabba the Hutt, Sy Snootles & the Rebo Band playing space disco performing "Lapti Nek", and the original Ewok song instead of a stupid New Age panflute tune at the end of RotJ.

edited: replaced Rancor pit with Sarlacc pit

The one addition in the 25th anniversary editions that I did enjoy was the extra wampa footage.

Looks inoffensive. I haven't seen the revised versions of The Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi.

People complained about the Sarlacc Pit looking like a vagina (and psycho-analyzing on how that tied into Lucas’ feelings about his ex-wife Marcia) long before the special edition added a beak. Normal is in the eye of the beholder.

Sorry, I meant Sarlacc pit, not Rancor pit. Where they added a silly Little-Shop-of-Horrors-like mouth thing. I preferred the slightly suggestive slimy hole in the ground surrounded by tentacles.

The original Rancor stuff was kept intact, I think.

In the original wampa scenes you don't get to see much of the creature, because the suit they had just wasn't convincing enough. IMHO the new scenes are appropriately pulpy and liven up the whole sequence a bit.

Yeah, I meant Sarlacc too. I changed my post.

The Rancor scene in Jabba’s Palace was cleaned up and some of the outlines around the creature were removed in the 2000s for the blu-rays. Looks much better.

You mean you did t like the addition of windows and skies on Bespin? That was the best change. The jump from featureless white corridors to a city in the clouds makes a huge difference.

I've never seen the blueray editions, just the 25th Anniversary versions in the cinema.

Um, yeah, if that's what a person thinks a vagina looks like, they should probably tell their significant other to go see a doctor...

I don't understand the hate about TLJ. It wasn't great but it wasn't all that horrible either (well except for the useless casino part).
At least he tried to do something different, for fuck's sake. For me the previous one was infinitely worse; JJ basically sold me a freaking scene-by-scene remake of Episode IV as if it was a new movie. It was embarassing. I left the cinema very annoyed, while after TLJ I thought "not great but ehhh... it had its couple of moments".

And the worse SW movie? Seriously? Have you seen Episode I? Come on, you can't seriously tell me TLJ is worse than *that* flaming pile of crap.

George Lucas turns 75 today!

I read that he is still actively involved in Star Wars, working on Episode IX with Abrams and Terrio.

I'd much rather watch TPM than TLJ.

TLJ took a bunch of expectations and just shat on them offering nothing. It felt as if the movie was made by people that simply don't like star wars or don't get what makes it enjoyable.

It is. JJ spoke with Kasdan, Johnson and Lucas before he started writing the script. He’s not doing day-to-day stuff but he’s been involved.
Well let's hope some good can come from this, but really after the blunder that was TLJ I think it's past the point of salvage. I hope I'm wrong. TLJ was critical in the story: explain Snoke and his legacy, explain the Knights of Ren and Luke's backstory etc. Instead it failed miserably.

Snoke isn’t really that interesting to be honest with you. When they revealed Palpatine’s laugh in the trailer I think everyone forgot about Snoke. The Knights of Ren are rumored to be in this one.

TPM is Saturday-morning cartoon drivel and unnecessary to the grander story to boot (seriously, just start with Attack of the Clones), but I can still get guilty pleasure out of that.

TLJ actively seeks to erase a lot of the good vibes that came before it, including FA.

The whole "ridiculous mask" bit is the moment that crystallized the problem for me. FA merchandise featured that mask prominently because it's cool if you accept the Star Wars aesthetic. Kids went "Wow, badass!" and wore it for Halloween. Adults appreciated the visual evocation of beloved villain Darth Vader, even if it was a bit of a re-hash... Then part of Kylo's "character development" is basically coming to understand that Darth Vader looks stupid. :trigger:

The Emperor never told Vader to take off his stupid mask because he needed it to survive.

Kylo only wears it because he’s trying too hard to be like grandpa. Snoke doesn’t want Kylo to be like Vader. Vader was weak. The mask is ridiculous because Kylo needs to be Kylo.

I think part of the reason he is going to wear it again is that perhaps after smashing it in The Last Jedi and telling Rey that they should let the past die, he comes to grip with the fact that they need to accept the past to move forward. The Force will never be balanced if either side is dismissive of the other.
