So, in a facebook media group I'm on there was a person who was asking how Lord of the Rings ended because they could never get through the last chapter because it was too sad. I gave a short paragraph explaining how everyone ended up.

Someone else replied, "The boat sank and everyone died."

To which the original poster replied "I expected as much."

Yep. “Gone West” or “gone into the West” has been a euphemism for “died” or “got killed” at least since Roman times. That’s what gave “Go west, young man!” its ironical edge.
