Who's Chris Chan?
What actually was the content of that book? Was it like just a catalogue of Slaanesh-esque sexy monsters like Succubi, or were there actual attempts at rules for "Adult Situations"?
It must be cold in the post-apocalyptic future, among other things.
Sure, but giant pompadours are good for trapping heat, so it balances.Well sure, if you're walking around the nuclear winter in only a bikini top I imagine it would get rather chilly.
Yeah... this one has clearly been drawn by an unfortunate denizen of this "Age of Ruin". You can feel the brain-damaging radiations.
That’s so cute! How old is the little tyke who drew this? If they persevere, they could really go places!
Here's the info I can find quickly.I must know more about this...
Yeah, the color cover is to the box set, the monochrome cover to the main rule book inside. Here's the info I can find quickly.
Wikipedia (with a different, bad looking, cover)
Rpggeek (with this cover)
Seems to be a 1980 rpg with classes and actually had two editions, the second one a boxed set in 1981. That would explain the cover variety I suppose.
The monochrome cover actually looks badass for a fanzine or something of the era. The right arm is really the only thing really bad about it.Yeah, the color cover is to the box set, the monochrome cover to the main rule book inside.
Agreed about the zine feel of the cover. I've got nothing against covers like this for small press stuff of that era.The monochrome cover actually looks badass for a fanzine or something of the era. The right arm is really the only thing really bad about it.
Oh the left arm looks a bit wrong too, for sure, but as you said it isn't that obvious and so doesn't strike me as really bad, just sort of a general "not good".Agreed about the zine feel of the cover. I've got nothing against covers like this for small press stuff of that era.
Although the right arm is more obvious, there's something about the left arm that throws me off. It kinda reminds me of a hind leg of a horse or something similar.
Part of what's throwing me about the left arm is the way the hand is drawn. With the lack of definition for the fingers and the triangular shape, combined with the odd angle and musculature for the arm it makes me think more 'hoof' than 'hand'.Oh the left arm looks a bit wrong too, for sure, but as you said it isn't that obvious and so doesn't strike me as really bad, just sort of a general "not good".
Wow that was indeed a rabbit hole. I kinda feel sorry for the poor bastard because their shitty parents allowed them to become a manchild who will never have a job or find a mate.Well, that's a rabbit hole.
Mongoose's art direction used to leave quite a lot to be desired, especially around the Mgt1e era - I've seen way cringier stuff in the rulebooks. These days, I think it's better than it was, but their covers are still nothing to write home about.I'm really enjoying this thread.
Like some have already said, some of these covers are so bad they become good from a satirical point of view.
I'm going to cheat with this submission of an interior piece of art found in Mongoose Traveller 2e. I credit this one piece alone for stopping me from buying anything from that product line. Pity, because I'm really interested in the system, but gah...

Well, that's a rabbit hole.
Anyone want to acquire the lucrative Sonichu RPG license?
I non-ironically like both of these pieces.
Well, that's a rabbit hole. ...
There are numerous documentaries on Youtube one can find about CC, including GenoSamual's deep-dive currently on part 45 which is well over 60 hours thus far, to Beneath the Bridge's series specifically on the Chris Chan Trolls. The classic introduction is this overview by Sachumo.
Yikes, that's rough.
With tiny spike arms? This image is weird. Is that Lion-O at the bottom?
Even for a joke book, that’s bad. That bending boot leg, ouch.
Margins were thin. Thin i tell you!Even for a joke book, that’s bad. That bending boot leg, ouch.
