I've heard about this streetwise god, but from what I heard courtesy was not his strong suit...

he's a changeling, was in a criminal organization, and found religion. Ganesha just wants you to be happy and seeking knowledge. He does not care if you walked on the wild side. He knows your heart.

of course, the changeling god sees this and might want to pull back one of his followers (inspired by Tool art). after all, he has many facets.

Finished rewriting an article for a Jonstown Compendium supplement. Now, need to finish my own, Secrets of HeroQuesting.

Then need to finish Merrie England: Age of Crusade.

After that, need to start of Secrets of the Oasis Folk and Secrets of the River Voices, again for the Jonstown Compendium. Maybe after that, I'll do Secrets of Dorastor. I'll keep the name of the Jonstown Compendium a Secret, though.

My wife comes back next week, after 3 months away. Time to do some housework.

Maybe tomorrow ...

So will the housework get done, or are you gonna take Bunch's advice?

Some housework tomorrow, some on Tuesday, some on Wednesday, some on Thursday, then a mad dash and panic around the flat on Friday, before heading off to meet her at Heathrow.

I've got it down to a fine art by now, especially as we moved into a flat a couple of years ago, which makes the amount of work much smaller.

Also, I learned my lesson when I spent a whole week cleaning everything from top to bottom, but when she came in she glanced around, then ran her finger along the top of a door and said it was dusty. So, if she complains about that and complains if things are messy, I'd sooner just leave it messy.

Last night's home Savage Worlds session went really well, thanks in part to the pub's suggestions about how to populate my Western town. I'll probably write up the session in more detail later.

For my library games, I've always used professionally published one shots, but I feel like I can rework last night's home session into a one-shot I could use at the library.

We played Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 last night (because that's what one of the players offered to run, and I actually prefer to play even if I'm not a fan of the rules).
Me and another "old dog" made a Fighter and a Monk and, in the typical old-school style, we cleared the "first dungeon" without getting into it (but we collected almost everything of value). In addition, we beat a small group of bandits, again without fighting them. Making heroes in DnD 3.5 is annoying enough that I prefer to save myself the risk of being bored (especially if I'm asleep...that shit might lead to me actually snoring).

Anyway, even without that, the "old-school rules" say that risks are taken when you have no choice. And if someone you don't like can take them risks, even better!
That's exactly what we did.
We express our grattitude to the late bandits for their courage, albeit stimulated by greed! We, of course, honestly told them where to find valuables - upstairs of an abandoned rich house. We even helped them climb up to the roof where there was an open hatch (and we provided them with a makeshift climbing hook and rope). We even stayed to guard the loot they were taking out ... until they were one by one running inside, lest the rest of them cheat on the loot :shade:.

"Did we tell them the place is probably full of demons?" - my fighter, thoughtfully, looking at the clawed hand pulling back the last member of the gang.
What a legitimate question! From the recon earlier, we had reason to believe that (perhaps) it was from the top floors of this rich house that the demon invasion of the town had begun. And we were sure the demons were walking by standing on the ceilings...
"Shit, I knew we forgot to say something!" - Monk half-ork with intellect 15.
"Now we at least know that sunlight hurts demons. The information was well worth the price we paid...and they were muggers, anyway". - my character, ending the subject. The sunlight caused bubbles on the clawed hand.
And besides, the Referee had said that we would raise the level by clearing the dungeon. He never said that we should personally enter it!
So we got a level, too .

Take it as a compliment and not lack of consideration !
When they called me again this past weekend I was told that a member of the group offered to run Tails of Equestria for them. She's been running it for a group at her church these last few months. I'm half expecting a call from her this evening to tell me how that went. As for me, I foresee too many doctor's visits in my near future.

I got around to writing up the last two sessions of the home Savage Worlds game:

Episode Four: Ding Dong, Dracula’s Dead
31 October, Rhino Year

The team of Pierre Delecto, Ayu, Baron Von Braun, N0-5R, and Kurt Warlock continue to explore the crypt. Zera arrives.

They come across the bride Siobahna, who is rather hostile, and stake her.

The HEPCATS find Dracula and his final bride, Alana in his central chamber. N0-5R and Ayu try to bond with Alana via chatting and sharing her bottle of bloodwine. Meanwhile, Baron tries to convince Dracula to stop ruling through fear.

Dracula is intrigued by the concept for a bit, but ultimately decides he’d rather keep murdering. Kurt disappears, battle happens, eventually the HEPCATS get the upper hand, and Zera deals the killing blow by shattering a coffin lid into stakes and sending all of them into Dracula’s torso, where some hit his heart.

The HEPCATS retrieve a book with a handwritten Dracula family tree, and a separate document listing everyone Dracula has turned into vampires.

With Dracula dead, the strange mist that had been preventing the HEPCATS from leaving Les Rues Sanglantes dissipates, and they return to base.

XP: 6, I think, but might have been 5? 4 for Kurt, since he left early.

[ed note: details are shaky, since I’m writing this almost two months after the fact]

Episode Five: Showtime in Saguaro City
7-9 November, Rhino Year
(real-life date: 25 January, 2020)

After being back at base for a bit, the HEPCATS are given a new mission: Go to Saguaro City in the Old West Shard and find out the contents of the letter that the recently deceased gunfighter Evil Al Audrey sent to his granddaughter, Evelyn Audrey. If the contents of the letter put Miss Audrey in danger, keep her safe.

HEPCATS administration suggests the team’s cover be “Doctor A’s Travelling Exhibition of Human Oddities and Mechanical Wonders,” and they agree. Jenny in costuming outfits everyone.

When Zera is offered her choice of a preacher outfit, a cowboy outfit, or a dress, she asks for a cowboy preacher dress.

With their mule, Fellini, and their show wagon, the team arrives in Saguaro City. They notice that the post office is more secure than the bank, and is currently locked up despite it being midday.

Ayu attempts to pickpocket Evelyn, but doesn’t find what she’s looking for.

They learn that Postmaster Stevenson is missing, and Evelyn’s letter is inside the post office.

As the team sets up their wagon’s fold-out stage for the show, Zera goes to the 4L Saloon where she chats with the bartender, Jose Esposito, and Baron observes. The second floor of the building holds Lady Larissa’s Lounges of Luxury, with “Rooms by the Hour, Half-Hour, and Quarter-Hour!” A brawl breaks out. Zera escapes unharmed, with some fresh blood on her knife.

The gang puts on a show! Ayu is the MC, and Baron, N0-5R, and Zera are the acts. They make a fair bit of money and make a good impression on the town.

Jose gets annoyed that no one is in the saloon, since everyone is out watching the show. He steps outside and offers whiskey on the house for the next ten minutes. A significant number of people return to the saloon.

As night falls, N0-5R continues to create a distraction. Ayu and Zera manage to enter the post office by hacking through the roof with hatchets. Zera gets into the cage containing the mail and retrieves Al’s letter to Evelyn.

The HEPCATS discover that the letter was dictated to Al’s companion, Bonita Juarez, because Al was on his death bed and too weak to hold a pen. The letter tells Evelyn that she will find her inheritance in a strongbox buried in the abandoned church at the unnamed ghost town by the Ghost River Gulch.

The HEPCATS decide the best way to keep Evelyn safe is to go retrieve the treasure themselves and bring it back to her…

To be continued…

This was the letter the HEPCATS intercepted:

To my dearest and only living descendant, my beloved granddaughter, Evelyn,

You may not remember me very well, considering I haven't seen you since you were knee-high to a grasshopper, but I'm sure you've heard tales of me and my deeds. Now, some of the things they say about me are downright impolite, some are outright falsehoods, and many are exaggerations. Yet I must admit, dear Evelyn, that more than half the lies they tell about me are true. After all, one is not bestowed the nickname "Evil Al" by being altruistic.

I am writing you, beloved granddaughter, because the facts are, I'm fixing to die and I reckon I'm destined for fiery damnation.

So to you, Evelyn Audrey, I bequeath all my worldly possessions. I have enclosed a map to help you find said possessions. They are buried in a strongbox in the abandoned church at the nameless ghost town located by the Ghost River Gulch.

Now, dear Evelyn, I wish you a long life full of health, happiness, and prosperity, as I lay me down to die.

Your loving grandfather,
Alfonse Audrey, "Evil Al"

Letter dictated to my treasured companion, Bonita Juarez, as I no longer find the strength to hold a pen
.

I was really happy with how this letter came out. I felt it provided an adventure hook, gave a sense of Al's character, and worked in references to 3 of my favorite things, without, IMHO, being too blatant about it:

  1. Ghost River Gulch- One of my favorite TV shows, Wynonna Earp, takes place in an area called the Ghost River Triangle.
  2. "fixing to die and I reckon I'm destined for fiery damnation"- the chorus of a great Steve Earle song, "Fixin' to Die," goes "I'm fixin' to die, reckon I'm goin' to Hell."
  3. "more than half the lies they tell about me are true."- one of my favorite moments from Star Trek Deep Space 9 (which is my favorite Star Trek) is when Dr. Bashir asks Garak which of the stories Garak told him are true and which ones weren't. Garak says "They're all true," Bashir asks "Even the lies?" and Garak responds "Especially the lies."
By the way, the letter actually had an additional adventure hook that I hadn't planned on. I figured the HEPCATS would probably either escort Evelyn to get her treasure, or go after it for themselves. They have decided to go after it for themselves, but they have also assumed that Bonita is going after it for herself.

But if Bonita is after the treasure for herself, why would she have sent the letter in the first place? Something for me to think on.

But if Bonita is after the treasure for herself, why would she have sent the letter in the first place? Something for me to think on.
Or maybe they're wrong and she's only there to make sure the rightful heir gets the prize?

Or maybe they're wrong and she's only there to make sure the rightful heir gets the prize?

Now that is an interesting twist!

ETA: Bonita Juarez is now a fully statted NPC, including Hindrance: Vow: Ensure Evelyn Audrey gets her inheritance.

HEPCATS Episode Six: Down Dusty Trails
10-12 November, Rhino Year
(Real Life Date 30 January, 2020)

Pierre Delecto and Kurt Warlock ride into town and meet up with the rest of the HEPCATS. There's some discussion of finding a mine and/ or running for town government, before ultimately deciding to proceed to the Ghost River Gulch to find Evelyn's inheritence.

The HEPCATS come to a town where some buildings are burning and the rest are painted red. There is a large pile of dead bodies in the center of town. Nearby an old man makes coffins. The old coffin-maker explains that Old Man Rasmussen, who had been greatly wronged by the town many years past, came back last night and had his revenge. When asked how Old Man Rasmussen managed to kill off the entire town by himself, the coffin-maker describes Old Man Rasmussen as "a force of nature."

The Baron acquires a coffin, and Zera acquires a top hat.

Further down the road, the HEPCATS hear, but don't see, someone singing "Rye Whiskey." Getting closer, they realize the singing is coming from a man within a deep hole that he is digging. He can't give a coherent explanation of why he's digging the hole, and also refuses help, but does encourage the HEPCATS to dig their own holes. Eventually Pierre reads the man's mind and sees that he believes God told him to go dig a hole, but didn't specify why.

A flash flood comes through the desert that evening, but the HEPCATS get through it unscathed.

The next day, they find the ruins of a Conquistador ship in the desert, which contains a chest of valuables. There is no evidence of how the ship got to the middle of the desert, or why no previous wanderers had taken the valuables. The team opens the chest and takes the gold, gems, and human skull they find inside.

Nearing the Ghost River Gulch, they encounter a wagon carrying the very energetic Doctor Pepper and his two lovely assistants, who are peddling Doctor Pepper's Patent Medicine. As part of the sales pitch, the assistants sing a song. The HEPCATS agree to buy some medicine, and Kurt convinces the Doctor to sell one of his mules as well.

Now that they have two mules, the HEPCATS are able to pick up the pace and arrive at the Ghost River Gulch ghost town at nightfall. Next to the church where Evelyn's inheritance is said to be buried, they see a graveyard with thirty-six graves marked only with crosses; no names or dates. The team begins to explore the church. Kurt opens a door.

Tune in next time to find out... what was behind the door! Same hep time, same hep channel!

I'm reading Empire of the Petal Throne, now I'm completely unsure If I will run it next or Pendragon.
I don't have the time to run neither of them, so It's okay for now. But I want to run both of them in the future, I just don't know which one first anymore.

Off to run "Star Wars '78" session 3. They're on Vorzyd 5, alias "The Gambler's World." Did anyone not think this guy was gonna show up?
Well, Lando still hasn't shown up as Session 3 went long and didn't get to the governor's party, and I had to reschedule Session 4 that was supposed to take place today because (1) I'm getting over a mild bout of the flu and (2) my birthday party was this afternoon. So Lando's surprise pre-The Empire Strikes Back debut won't be happening until February 8th.

I am running a loose game of Pendragon in Discord, with about 8 players (six knights and two ladies). They're going through the Great Pendragon Campaign, but I jumped ahead to the Anarchy because I wanted to put the players in more dire straits and also give them more freedom to scheme and do as they please. They're struggling under Saxon tribute and are starting to play most unchivalrously in order to negate the loss of some of their manorial income each year.

I am going to be converting a BOL Hack game over to Savage Worlds Adventure Edition.

a little slow to game, but they did get into town. I had prepped them with emails based on which social circles they ran in. The cavalier is a member of the town guard, etc. Anyhow, they met with the lord of the keep, and they tried to figure out what to do with over 1000 refugees, which is 25% of the cities population. In the end, I think the lord will evacuate most of the city in prep for the horde coming in.

they also found that 3 powerful weapons had been stolen - one from the lord's political enemy that he needs to fight the coming battle, one from the local death clerics, and one from the local weaponsmith. they managed to decipher the location (a nearby volcano) and who took them (an ancient wizard named Keraptis, who is supposed to be dead). The political enemy, a merchant and on the shady side, has said she will assist if she gets her weapon back.

this will be a change for them. We don't do a lot of dungeons, or haven't in a good long while, and I'm going to be tuning this right towards the top of their range - they are at the top end of the module already, and there are a lot of them.

I am re-booting my Star Wars: Age of Rebellion "Rust Squadron" campaign for a new set of players. I've snagged some Star Wars Legion figures and I'm painting them. I'm using Count Dooku for the Quixotic Jedi NPC. I'm almost done with him, so here's a crappy pic using my laptop camera:

I liked the setting, but I believe the ruleset will support it poorly. Nevertheless I want to run it in the future before arriving into any conclusions.

So after many sessions and struggles, our journey to the Deathlands led to my wizard Tianna being brought back to life.

Granted, her henchmen died in the process, but that's more than a fair trade, right?

(RIP Einar - you were fun to play)

As a side note to my move into a dungeon, my paladin player switched to a bagpipe-playing, Macuahuitl-wielding halfling berserker. Up side - it's crazy, and should be fun. Downside - said dungeon has water that will infect you with blinding sickness if you fall in it, there are quite a few Evil™ things that the paladin would be very good again, including a vampire, and there are shadows which can kill you with fear but the paladin makes everyone else around him immune to fear.

so, he made it harder by switching for a few games. Granted, there is a cleric who can turn undead and cure disease (if he thinks to look), and the cavalier (Who is regularly absent) can make them immune to fear, but... well... would have been his moment to shine! Now he gets to try and crack open the shell of the beast in the boiling bubble who can sever a limb of most of the party if he gets his claws on you.

Did I mention the water is at least 30m deep everywhere, and in many places will be up to the halfling's waist?

I didn't mention the green slime that eats flesh.

Just prepping for HEPCATS Episode 7, which, barring disaster, will happen this Thursday.

Quick Episode 6 recap: the HEPCATS intercepted Evil Al's letter to Evelyn, which indicated the location of his treasure stash. The HEPCATS decided the best way to keep Evelyn safe is to retrieve the treasure themselves. They've ridden from Saguaro City to the abandoned church in the ghost town by the Ghost River Gulch where the treasure is supposed to be buried. They noticed a room inside the church and Kurt was about to open the door...

So here are my bullet points for this coming session. As ever, I tried to keep it loose enough to allow for a lot of player freedom. And I know to not get too wedded to my plans, because the one thing I can reliably predict about my players is that they will do something I did not predict, haha.

Hep Ep 7- quick & dirty:

  • Diamond D gang leader is already in the room where Kurt is opening the door
  • “Ah recognize you, you varmint…”
  • If Truce, how will PCs handle looking for the treasure? [ed note: I'm not planning to answer this. It's up to them]
  • If fight, Diamond D gang has all windows covered
  • Diamond D gang are all d6 extras with toughness 5, revolvers that do 2d6+1, and knives that do Str + d4
  • If fight, Grave Digger (Coffin Maker’s twin brother) appears in the church’s graveyard, digging fresh graves
  • If Ally card* is played, deputy US Marshals show up to help
  • If PCs win, they’ll probably look for the treasure. It’s accessible via whatever clever trick the players think of
  • If PCs lose, they’ll have to escape from the Diamond D gang’s camp, and the Diamond D gang will have Al’s letter to Evelyn
  • If PCs ride back toward Saguaro City with the treasure, Ames-Krueger gang will ambush them en route. Use stats for James-Younger Gang.
  • If PCs fail to escape, or lose the fight, Ames-Krueger gang will confiscate the treasure
  • What about Bonita?? Roll to see if she appears sometime this session??
  • If the PCs make it back to Saguaro City,
    • Evelyn will try to romance Ayu
    • The “professionals” will try earn Zera’s money
    • Postmaster is still missing
    • Sheriff is still missing
*We're using the Adventure Deck, so it's possible a player could end up with a card that lets them summon allies.

Yeah, I have this feeling that I would like Bethorm, but the TETV zine made me go for the old school entry point.
I liked the game even tough I have this feeling the system it proposes won't work for going deeper into the setting, but as I said I don't draw conclusions before some proper testing.

Bethorm appears to be closer to my rollplaying preferences, I'm also heavly tempted to use the RQ petersen rules.
Something has been bugging me off tough, Bethorm has a great cover, but why is one of the moons purple instead of scarlet? I can't say if the artist just missed it or if there is some excuse for adventure on it. (maybe both... haha)
No idea regarding the colour. I'd just say it was a temporary atmospheric condition and not at all a problem with the printer:grin:!
