I used to play regularly with the "They have no initiative until we roll initiative" group and was part of the problem as much as anyone. All I can say is even though it might look like it to you people might be still really enjoying it and look forward to it. If it keeps happening you might just have a quick talk with them.

i feel like they are pretty much there to smash Orcs. Which, fine I guess, we will probably want to switch GMs, as the current one prefers a lot more roleplaying.

we suspect one guy was playing a video game while the other were playing. The guy who took long to make a character is known to do this... he has done it in many other games. Essentially, everything bad gets magnified in the online setting as there is no visibility and accountability Right there. All the distractions at home are there.

im still pretty frustrated. The GM and I talked last night snd both of us are pretty fed up.

Gaming at the moment...

Playing: Alternity 1e (homebrew sci-fi setting).
Playing Mythras, very fun monster island scenario.
GM: Prepping a 5e game for after the Alternity one. Cannot get my group to give my Mythras pitches a go :brokenheart:
GM: Toying with running something online.

Steel Aces 5: And Deadly Actions
Last week we were introduced to John Barrister, time to find out what's actually on his mind, and what he plans to do.

I am sorry to hear that and would be extremely unhappy if it happened to me. That is so disrespectful it makes me angry.

During our online gaming we do Skype with cameras and everyone is on the Brady Bunch style display. I can only speak with certainty for myself and the Mrs but seeing other people helps us stay engaged. It's not practical for every table but if you can do it I highly recommend it.

I am really happy with how my Carcosa game is panning out. It is a simple 10x10 hexcrawl describing a harsh, monster-haunted wasteland called the Terror Zone. A 10x10 hexcrawl might seem small but coming up with a 100 interesting locations is no picnic even with the assistance of old school icons like the Keep on the Borderlands, Caves of Chaos, and Skull Mountain. There are no roads to speak of, beasts of burden are rare, and travel range is largely limited by the water one can carry.

Younger Pubbers might not remember Skull Mountain but I sure as hell do. This picture fired up my childhood imagination like nothing else. I look at that and the ideas start flowing.

Someone fleshed it out completely for 5e as I recall.

Unfortunately it has not yet been done to my satisfaction so I plan to steal someone's maps and fill the dungeon on my own. I'll rip off City of the Ancients from Fight On! #10 to populate the last level. Like I said elsewhere I am not creative but am okay at stealing other people's ideas and kinda mashing them together into a coherent whole.

A somewhat abbreviated BF session with the teens due to some real-life stuff. Mainly, they were concentrating on getting back to their home world. One of the Drow who had been accompanying them, Thyria, decides to go along with them to their world (really good reaction rolls). Along the way back to the portal they had traveled through, they encounter a tribe of Newhonian Ghouls, and after some negotiating (and some flirting) they manage to avoid combat.

Making their way to the portal, they notice some recent footprints. What they fail to notice is that sigils indicating the destination on the other side of the portal are slightly different than they were when they first arrived on this world.

Stepping through the portal, there's good news and bad news. The good news is that they're back on Thera. The bad news is that they're ill-equipped to deal with the snows and frigid winds they suddenly find themselves in...

Last week both of my games were canceled. First week completely off of gaming in a long time. I was surprisingly relieved. Got in a lot of extra reading, miniature painting, and played a video game (Barotrauma, highly recommended) with some friends for the first time in months.
I may need a break from the hobby. Seems like it's become terribly demanding of my time and I'm a bit burnt out.

Feeling really awful, short of breath, tired, like my brain isn't functioning. I already caught covid once in March, but it feels the same... and you can get it more than once.

It's just like... fuck man I work from home, my wife works from home, my son goes to school online, we never even go out how the hell did I catch it again if that is what this is.

I think I'm designing a Rifts campaign. I hadn't really planned on it, but I've done enough reading and had enough ideas that I might as well just continue. Savage Worlds engine for sure, as I haven't been able to stomach the Palladium engine for years. As I mentioned in another thread I'm starting with Western tropes with Deadwood and the Mandalorian as touchstones so far. Doing Rifts as a Western hadn't occurred to me before, or appealed enough I suppose, but I like it a lot. I'm not a huge fan of Western RPGing mostly, but Gonzo-Post-Apocalyptic-Fantasy-Sci-fi-Western apparently works well for me. Who knew.

What's up with the Palladium engine? I've never played a Palladium game and the buzz about it is fairly critical. But when I ask what the issue is, the replies range from "meh, it's okay." to "SHUT YOUR MOUTH IT'S GODLIKE".

Basically 1980s-vintage AD&D mechanics with some house rules and better, more interactive combat. The only real problem is the rules aren't all where you'd expect them to be so you end up flipping back and forth through chapters until you are used to the peculiarities, and some rules aren't explained as well as they could be. I know I had to read the Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles iteration of the rules to understand what I was confused by in Heroes Unlimited (or maybe it was Ninjas & Superspies).

Too much crunch and too much content for me. I dont like percentiles much anyway, so it just isnt for me. The book keeping and splat book bloat is more than I want to deal with too. SW isn't my favorite system, but I like it a lot more than Palladium. I also dont like the MDC-SDC thing the way Palladium works it at all. Its a fine system, just not to my taste.

Palladium did mecha so bad, and since the IP they had that I liked the most (Robotech) was mecha, welp.

Granted Savage Worlds also does mecha bad. So...

I wasn't planning on using/allowing Armoured Suits, so im not fashed about the armour rules so much. My Western template doesnt really have room for Glitter Boys. I don't want the bother of balancing threats honestly. Smaller foes and squishier heroes suits me just fine.

Yeah I really like SW, just don't like it for mechs. At person scale I think it works really good.

Rifts is a mess ruleswise. Palladium fantasy is better but I'd just steal the setting and play B/X instead. After the Bomb is pretty awesome but again I'd use a different ruleset and keep the cool setting.

GURPS, and making sense of the new gaming-on-Discord world. (It does have its advantages, granted.) The current adventure is something of an experiment: a catastrophe has hit the College of Mages, and a couple of the players have brought in old experienced ones to find out what's happened ... both between 250-300 pts. But it's being led by a character who's been running continuously for 17 years, and is at a lean, mean 735: by far the highest disparity I've ever attempted or heard of. We'll see how it comes out.

Last night in D&D 5e, we made our way from Hell to Limbo, rescued a kid, and returned the land of the living. In the process, we destroyed one Hellhound and befriended a second Hellhound and made it our pet. Our party always befriends animals.

Once back, we know that we have a fight on the horizon with one of the Big Bads, so we set up a Heroes' Feast to happen next session. Our party has a very silly habit of having a Heroes' Feast when we know we're about have a big battle... and inviting the villain to the feast. :trigger:

well, doing some post game talking with folks. we found one problem - one of the players (the "i'm just happy to be here" one) is not paying attention enough to miss an important skill on his character sheet through 2 10 minute discussions about it's existence in the group. This lack of attention really rubs the GM badly (i.e. why am I running a game if you won't pay attention) and will warrant a "crucial conversation".

there will also be some character adjustment, but this one is more serious.

We had another session of Art of Wuxia last night. It also ended in the early hours of the morning:thumbsup:.

And it went swimmingly, except for the fact that a player freaked out after an orangutan nearly defeated her character in single combat on a jungle path. I still don't know why someone who has Lightstep abilities decided to contend over a patch of trope, but whatever:shade:.
At least she apologized later. Though it didn't stop another player from recommending to me (in private, later) to "just start railroading her already and don't let her commit huge mistakes".
I guess it'd only be logical to do that, but I hate this GMing technique, so she gets to freak out at times:devil:.

Gaming weekly on Roll20. I'm actually gaming more during this Pandemic than I did before it.

DMing a 5e campaign through Tales from the Yawning Portal. It's been okay, but I'm starting to greatly dislike some of the character options in 5e. Namely, the Aasimar Druid in the party. Shapeshifting is always a hassle for me as DM; a weak point. Plus I don't like how the Druid can instantly become able to change into an animal it just saw in passing for 10 seconds. I thought that they had to study them, or observe them for a bit first?

Dming a LotFP campaign. I really, really like old school DnD compared with the menagerie of powers in 5e. So far enjoying it more than running 5e.

Playing in a 5e Eberron campaign as a Bard of College of Glamour. Lots of fun, but the Druid in the party isn't helping my dislike of the class. Last fight he summoned about 8 wolves to a fight and the battle went on for almost an hour. So dull.

All in all I'm starting to realize that I will change how I run D&D 5e in the future. Like trimming down a few of the character options that I find a handful to deal with. Selfish, I know, but I honestly am no longer a fan of the Forgotten Realm's flavor of High Fantasy. Everything is fantastic and so nothing is.

At least the Orangotan didn't defeat her in _chess_ The late Jack had a character that was pretty full of himself and he lost a chess game to, not an Orangatan, but an enhanced Elephant that was really good at rook moves.

Much discussion in my crew. There is currently going to be a Band who Club People on the Head because they want to fucking roleplay a bit.

however, other than that, it’s largely going well. Some clarifications of rules, my complete lack of cohesive decking rules (were not really into that anyways), and busily converting SR Missions. There was a little squirming at the lack of ability to block getting shot with a gun being painful, even if you have pain block, but pointed out it was a conscious decision to pull it down just a bit from SR. There is some fighting with money and equipment (I don’t actually want a price sheet, or to track hundreds of nuyen), and that is annoying, but I’m otherwise pretty happy with it. If I was very lazy, I would just take the price sheet from SR.

That'd be a fine prank, but I suspect she'd have left the group. Besides, this wasn't an enhanced orangutan...just an orangutan who managed to grab a hold on her speed-based character.
BTW, another character joined the fray then, attacking from ambush, and they killed the beast together, so she didn't lose.
She was just outraged at the fact that the Orangutan had an ability mirroring a kung-fu technique, which made no sense to her.

...until then they were waiting for her to climb into the trees with them, and placing bets:shade:. The usual opinion was "much better than a cricket fight"!

Good news: I tested negative for COVID. Bad News: while this makes me feel better emotionally, I still physically feel like pure garbage :B Whatever I do have is kicking my ass.
I think many people who caught COVID are now finding some residual issues, and the health services feel that COVID recoverer's general health is not as robust as it previously was.

Hope you feel better mate, it's been a tough year

Quick background in case I have any new readers: HEPCATS Team Zero is a special missions team consisting of the PCs Ayu, an android who passes for human; Baron von Braun, a pacifist space vampire; N0-5R, an android who doesn’t quite pass for human; Pierre Delecto, a human psionicist with political aspirations; Sargoth Trio, a human; and Zera, an Avion warrior.

Team Zero also has some NPC tagalongs/ auxiliary members: DJ-Q2, a robot DJ for whom N0-5R has a thing; Franceska, a ghost agent from another HEPCATS team; GREG the sentient spaceship; and Team Mad Science, a pair of mad scientists who build the team's equipment.

Team Zero is currently enjoying a vacation on Planet Kelsey, where a subset of the team, dubbed “Diet Greg,” is entering the contest to find a spouse for Princess Bluela.

HEPCATS Episode 23: Marinated Connective Tissue
27 November, Rhino Year

Part One: Guess Who’s Back, Back Again?

No one is sure where Ayu or Pierre ran off to, but they’re not too worried about it. They’re also unsure where Sargoth is, but they’re almost always unsure where Sargoth is.

With Diet Greg members Ayu and Pierre absent, and GREG not having a body yet, for rehearsal purposes Baron decides to be Pierre, N0-5R decides to be Ayu, and Zera decides to be GREG. Baron puts on Cuban Groucho Marx glasses, Zera tapes bits of metal to herself, and N0-5R makes N0-5R’s self appear less obviously android-esque and more fleshy.

Baron struggles mightily with talking like Pierre. Why the team put on their disguises immediately, before arriving at rehearsal, no one is sure…

Baron asks Team Mad Science if they can make a portable oven. They say sure and ask what to name it. Zera (of course) says “Greg.” Baron suggests that “the von Brauner” would be a better name. He mentions that the origin of Clan von Braun’s fortune came from baking.

On the Rocket Sled trip back to the Palace of the Blues, Baron, with some assistance from N0-5R, shoots the gap between a giant cloud of three-eyed Mucus Frogs and a dangerous-looking thundercloud. No one knows why there was a cloud of Mucus Frogs.

Upon arrival at the Palace of the Blues, King Longwang McGregor, being his usual jovial self, happily greets the party. He notices their badly-damaged prisoner Vallatrex and offers to hold him in the medical wing of the Dragonfolks’ new prison system. The team agrees, and King Longwang says he’ll make Vallatrex available for questioning if/when Vallatrex is capable.

King Longwang reminds the team of how, when Evil Emperor Zeke was on Planet Kelsey’s doorstep, they asked “Do you have a device that can power up a few people enough to fight an army?” He had vaguely recalled that his great-great grandfather had something like that and tasked Timjim to find it. Well, Timjim finally found it!

The device’s effects last for one hour of in-game time, and it amplifies a person’s damage output x10, pace x4, and toughness x3.

There is just one teeny-tiny little complication: it can only be used once in a person’s lifetime. If someone attempts to use it a second time, they flat-out die. Baron asks, “What if you’re already undead?” King Longwang doesn’t know, as it has never come up before.

King Longwang tells them the judges for the Royal Spouse-Finding Contest will be Queen Arabella of the Blues; a Dragonfolk celebrity chef named Bronson Brando; and artificial strategist Robobrain, who looks like a large robotic brain under glass with robotic spider legs.

To be continued...

Yesterday, I played in C.J.s campaign. My character, Slinky Serrano, an Urban Environment Specialist (basically a city ranger) and his closest companions in the Nobodies street gang, Urg, a goblin who is also a UES, and Org, an Ogre who is a Fighter/Half Mage, pulled off a heist at a merchant's house. We had meat with sleep potion in it that took care of the mastiffs and one-use magic keys that took care of the locks that the merchant depended on for security and we got in and got out with our loot. We were going out the front gate by the time the merchant was able to use a wand and nail the goblin and I with lightning. At the same time, I shot him with a one-handed crossbow that is Slinky's pride and joy. Injured and trailing the smell of burned flesh and hair, we got to our lair to examine the loot.

Today, the party in my Old Meos campaign was exiting the tunnel that leads to the Dark Market, Anithor, a circus strongman, Domingo, a gambler with military training and Amit, a Brother who serves the Faceless God at Saint Anne of the Crossroads, were taking the Shan princess they had rescued and the woman who was one of her kidnappers out, one to return to her family and one to face justice.

As they were leaving, thirty piranhakeets erupted from a sewer. Anithor threw the bound prisoner into their midst and that disoriented them and some of them began feeding on the prisoner. Given a respite, the party was able to take cover in the mouth of the tunnel. The princess disrupted the birds again with a Flash spell. Some of them never got around to attacking the party as they were eating the prisoner. The rest attacked. The princess failed in an attempt to burn some or all of them with a spell and Domingo fell bleeding from several wounds. The other two, both wounded, managed to drive the beastly little birds off.

Then they heard something moving behind them. A Monster Spider had been attracted by the commotion. Amit and Anithor killed it while the princess healed Domingo.

Sounds great fun, people:smile:! Throwing the prisoner is something I'd expect to see in one of my sessions, especially when the wife is playing:wink:.

Another Age of Wuxia session last night, which also continued until morning. Though we started later because we had to finish some work-related stuff first, so it only came to about 3-3,5 hours
So I only counted it as a half session, meaning I'd allow them to meditate a second time to recover Qi, but I'm not giving any XP yet. I might add a point or two to the total of my next session, or if I decide it's closer to a half-session as well, I'd just give them normal XP for a session.
I rate "sessions" per chunks of time, yes, because it seems most fair to me. Though the players keep trying to persuade me that a bit shorter should still count:tongue:.
(That's an average tempo of getting together for sessions, where my core group is concerned, BTW. The record is "three times per day" so far. It's small wonder I had to come up with time-saving Refereeing techniques, isn't it:shade:?
Again, having players living in the same building simplifies stuff a whole lot!)

So what actually happened?
Well...it would be tough to tell this without adding the stuff from the previous session. But even the bullet points format of the account is way too damn long to post on a forum! (A bit shy of 12k signs).
As a note, though, I'm quite happy with how this went, so I ha the idea of maybe writing it up as an adventure for some wuxia system out there. Because why not? And I'd like to see how other groups would fare:devil:!

Or maybe I should just post it on my blog or something. Let's try the short version:
Some of the PCs went to explore the island of a sorcerer-pirate captain. And they found his secret mushroom garden, which has mushrooms with properties that make Lewis Caroll happy. Too, they realized there's dozens of pirates and they're being trained to fight in kung-fu formations...
Also, they managed to get themselves on the bad side of some smugglers and into a tangled mess of relationships between themselves which might lead to violence in the future.

The other group has PCs from a clan of bodyguards, so they saved a poet from a game of hasard that he was winning...against 4 of the people ranked between 43rd and 70th in the Wuli and some of the worst reputations. Those people are now looking for the PCs. Well, the 3 that survived.
Then they saved him (or his bride, orboth) from a marriage he wanted - by drugging him and dragging him to his benefactor, who'd asked them to find him and ensure his safety ("he's prone to get into messes, but what a great talent!").
Also, they got themselves into a tangled mess of relationships between themselves which might lead to violence in the future...that's my group, after all, splitting in different parts of the setting doesn't change that fact:evil:!

The long version? It's near 7 pages at the moment...one might suspect I've started writing up the adventure already.

HEPCATS Episode 23: Marinated Connective Tissue

Part 2: Rehearsal & Robo-food

Finally arriving at the rehearsal grounds, the team brainstorms what their act should be. They determine that Zera is good at killing; Ayu is good at flirting with women, doing agility-based physical maneuvers, and being disappointed in humanity; Pierre is good at supporting small businesses, telling people to vote for him, killing people whom he finds inconvenient, and setting things on fire with his mind. They try to think of something that incorporates these elements.

The production crew points out that one of the other events will allow contestants to show off their combat skills, so just maybe the team shouldn’t have killing as part of their Talent Show act.

Zera then remembers that besides killing, she also is very strong, can shoot rainbow energy, and can fly. They decide that their act will be to tie Princess Bluela and Ayu to ropes, which Zera will carry into the sky so that Ayu and the princess can sky-dance, while, for increased visual spectacle, Zera shoots rainbow energy and Pierre uses his mind powers to start fires. N0-5R asks DJ-Q2 to pick some music for the act, which he happily does.

Meanwhile, Team Mad Science completes GREG’s hard-light hologram body, H.Greg, who shows up. H.Greg is a little bit oddly angular, but also quite handsome. Zera gets flustered by his looks and has to excuse herself.

The team asks H.Greg if he can sing as his part of their act. He doesn’t know, as he’s never tried before, but it turns out he is a pretty decent baritone.

Baron runs into Franceska and asks how her vacation is going. She says she’s enjoying it a lot, but is a little bit worried that Frank, the planetary conqueror who once tried to use her to power his ship’s engines, will track her down and try it again.

Celebrity Chef Bronson Brando is cooking up a storm for everyone at the rehearsal grounds. N0-5R asks Bronson what dish he would recommend for someone who doesn’t need to eat. He suggests that, if one doesn’t need to eat, then they should make eating a really special event, and he filets some very fresh fish and cooks it with rare spices.

N0-5R, being an inexperienced eater, slides the entire fish down his throat in one go.

N0-5R aks Bronson if he has any petit fours, but pronounces it “petite fours.” Bronson has a variety available, and N0-5R chooses one shaped like a heart to give to DJ-Q2. NO-5R nervously tells DJ-Q2 “I know you don’t need to eat, but eating can be fun even if you don’t need to, so I thought you might like this.”

DJ-Q2 enjoys the petit four quite a bit and tells N0-5R, “Yes, it can be quite enjoyable for robots to do things that robots don’t need to do.” N0-5R gets embarrassed and runs away.

Zera asks for three of everything, which Bronson happily provides on three platters loaded with plates. Baron helps Zera balance the plates. Bronson is impressed with how much Zera can eat, especially since she appears hollow-boned. Zera happily replies, “I am hollow-boned!”

Baron asks for “local, ethically sourced organic stag blood from a stag that wasn’t killed.” Bronson has a drink dispenser full of it under the table and pours Baron a glass.

Nearby, former imperial bodyguards Emi and Tami, AKA Team No Suits, are practicing with polearms. Emi points out that with Evil Emperor Zeke dead, there must be an empty spot on “The Council of Steven.” Emi says that they were just supposed to protect Zeke, not listen in on his video calls, so they shouldn’t even know about The Council of Steven.

Tami says that it wasn’t really possible to avoid overhearing Zeke’s calls in the course of their duties. Emi and Tami debate heavily over whether it was really “The Council of Steven” or “The Council of Seven,” and ultimately conclude that it must have been “The Council of Seven Stevens.”

Team Zero speculates on how many different variations there are on the name “Steven.”

To be continued...

The guy who threw the prisoner is a carnival wrestler, strongman who is as smart as a bag of hammers. The Brother, who considers himself the guy's spiritual mentor, thought about reprimanding him but decided that he couldn't bring himself to do it. She was 100% going to be executed anyway.

Wow, that sounds like one of my sessions...not the specific events, but the tone and participating in a contest like this:grin:!

I even know who'd be playing Zera. The one who "remembers she can also, apart from killing, fly, shoot rainbow energy and show off her strength":shade:!

Yup, even the justification was the same that she'd probably use! No "Dirty dozen" if you leave it to some of my players, because who would go to rusk his life if he's going to be executed afterwards, anyway:tongue:?
I'm obviously not saying it's a bad decision, it's just something that many other players wouldn't even think of:thumbsup:.

Ran a dry run RQ scenario set in Dorastor, in preparation for Glorantha Games Online, we started at 2030 instead of 1900, as 2 people couldn't make it until later, then they pulled out anyway, so we played with 2 people. They said it was good, but "can we play our normal campaign next week?"

Ran the same scenario at Glorantha Games Online and it seemed to go down really well. Had 6 Players signed up plus one on a waiting list. new guidelines for Dorastor: 1. Never lick a Dragon skeleton; 2. Drink a Potion roll some dice. Was incredibly nervous about it, for some reason, but it seemed to go OK.

Ran our regular weekly session on Monday. One person was late joining as his laptop had a few issues, someone else couldn't get sound for 30 minutes, someone else dropped off Whatsapp and didn't join the game, so we were really concerned as last time he did something similar he had had a heart attack and was in hospital for 3 months, fortunately, it was only his phone and tablet that had died.

Running a game Sunday around 3PM eastern time on Facebook video chat that will probably be an intermittent thing but might acquire a schedule. Anyone interested, PM me or say it here.

Slinky Serrano is eager to get into more mischief in C.J.'s Wednesday game. I am actually ready for my Thursday game for a change, but I might change things around anyway.

Working on another Silk Road Setting adventure, "A Misplaced Prince."
