What are y'all up to these days?

Same. I'm really interested in what a party of characters from a Conan game consists of these days. Is it a typical D&D party of one each, or a team of mercenaries?
I imagine a typical Hyborian Age party being a collection of thieves, wanderers, and fighting men with maybe a single scholar or sorcerer. Not that this is canon or the only true way, it's just how it's always panned out in my experience running or playing.

I’m running a Conan game using Mythras for rules and the 2d20 books for setting. I’m prepping for my next session this Saturday. Where is your campaign set? Mine takes place in the Border Kingdoms.
Mythras is perfect for a sword & sorcery game, and when Mongoose stopped publishing Conan D20 I was pretty unhappy that it wasn't internally ported over to MRQ2/Legend - the system that evolved to Mythras.

A big loss for Mongoose.

I have been collecting the Modiphius Conan books since the KS, and initially was going to use them all for resources in an upcoming BRP game.

BRP is one of my favourite systems and Mythras is definately a great fit for the Hyborian Age. I was just going to tweak the magic trappings to make magic more mysterious and dark. Possibly amp up the Luck Points if I wanted more pulp action flavour, but that's it - Mythras is definately solid for playing in the Hyborian Age.

However it turns out that after giving the Conan core book a good read, I surprised myself and ended up liking the 2D20 system for this setting,
I figured I might as well play it RAW, with the option of converting to Mythras if need be.

So far so good. It does capture alot of the feel of the Conan stories, so at this stage I am happy.

However it's only very early days yet.
I am still running my group thru an intro adventure - The Pit of Kutulla - which has the premise of a slave ship that gets shipwrecked on an unknown island, somewhere south of Argos and north of Kush.
I'm not sure where I will head the game after this, so hopefully one of the official scenarios will provide the next logical step.

Will update here on how things progress

My Conan campaign is in the Border Kingdoms. We have a Cimmerian Warrior, a Border Kingdoms Warrior, a Khitan Mystic, and a Zingaran Acrobat.

The Acrobat is on the run, the Mystic is an escaped Hyperborean slave, the Cimmerian warrior was exiled, and the other warrior is a homeless wanderer after Hyperborean slavers sacked his village.

What characters did they make for Conan?
We have a Zingaran Sea Captain who recently lost his crew and ship; an Aquilonian noblewoman on the run from fanatic cultists (she is secretly a Witch); and a Cimmerian Barbarian on a vengeance quest.

The first session started with them as captives aboard a pirate ship bound for the slave markets of Kush.

A breakout occured amid a raging storm, leaving the Galley shipwrecked and the player-characters free. The only issue is they are marooned on an isolative island somewhere south of Argos and north of Kush. In addition to evading capture, they have to contend with the savage inhabitents on the island.

So it's off to a good start.
Third session kicks off today!

Nice to see some love for Conan in this thread and looking forward to hearing how your games went.
Hmmm...perhaps a Hyborian Age thread is in order...?

That way we can discuss lore, novels, artwork, comics, games, sessions, etc in one thread.
Also it could cover whatever rpg systems we use.

Just an idea, if anyone is interested?

Agreed. Those MRQ2 Conan books that never happened are #1 on my list of RPG books I was excited about but got cancelled. RuneQuest 6 Glorantha is #2, but that's another story.

I was bent on running RuneQuest 6 Book of Quests with Mythras, and then decided to run it in Conan's world. I may have ended up running 2d20 if I had started with those books. At this point I've just changed the names from the adventure to match the Hyborian Age, and am adding detail as I start reading the 2d20 books.

I was actually going to do pretty much the same thing with Mythras
I was going to run either Book of Quests or The Spider-God's Bride - likely both, depending upon what my group wanted to do.

Both are perfect campaigns for this setting, so a few name changes are all that's needed to make them set in the Hyborian Age

I actually ended up running a Call of Cthulhu campaign instead, so that was my GM focus for a while.
Another GM then had his turn to run a HARP Cyradon campaign. Then someone ran a D&D 5E Forgotten Realms campaign, and this was followed by his sister running some Middle Earth and Arabian Nights sessions using Fate Core.

So this shelved my Mythras Hyborian Age game for quite a while.

This year kicks off with me in the GM seat again, and if I hadn't been willing to take a closer look at the Conan core book, then I would have likely been running a Hyborian Age Mythras game this afternoon.

But it's all good

I will be a bit busy today, but I will likely do this in a few days
Unless one of you pulls the trigger first and kicks it off while I am gone.
I'm good with that as well

Maybe need to work out how the relevant posts of this thread can be ported across to a new thread. Just to keep the banter momentum going.

In any case, a designated Hyborian Age thread needs to be resurrected or created

By Crom, this will happen!

I posted one, I look forward to hearing more!

And my core group might have lost a player. Though she's been like that for a while:shade:.

Lately the real world has not been encouraging to interact with. On a grand scale it's not a big deal. Like this is a better place to hang out with than the other two major RPG forums the real world is finding it hard not to mirror those places.

On Wednesday, we fought our way out of the neighborhood. We are wealthy and have no motivation to adventure, except in self-defense. Slinky is going to find a hooker who looks like the player character Sara and make her do bad things.
C.J. wants to start a new campaign and we are creating characters.

A sn*wstorm in CT. kept Bruce from driving to C.J's place where the computer is, so no game.

In yesterday's BF game, the teens got to explore the tower they were investigating, which had seen better days, but overall wasn't in too bad of a condition, and seemed a likely candidate for renovation for the wizard to use. The tower itself, once a way station for stops between larger fortresses and castles , had only minor threats inside, such as snakes and other critters that had moved into various parts of it. Of course, it wasn't that simple, as they discovered a hidden entrance into an underground lair, that had once been used by a Chaos cult. The main threat turned out to be a Death Slaad, bound in a summoning circle laid down years earlier. Even with the advantage of planning and a coordinated attack, breaking the circle to attack it nearly cost the party dearly, between the slaad releasing a fireball, summoning a blue slaad, and then wading in with its pretty nasty claw/claw/bite attacks. The teens concentrated their attacks on the death slaad, finally finishing it off, but that allowed the blue slaad to get some further nasty hits in as well before the group managed to finish it off as well. Not a lot of treasure acquired, since the main treasure was the tower itself. After cleansing the taint of chaos from the area, the last part of the session involved the renovation of the tower, via a mix of both magic and manpower brought in to fix up the place. This involved further passage of time, which meant we entered once again into the winter months, as the PCs and their henchman continued to settle in and settle down in the village of Oakhurst.

Later that evening me and the other adults played through the conclusion of our introductory Witchcraft scenario for the group of characters we created. A pretty nasty fight with both the spooky MIB types we had encountered earlier and the demon-possessed serial child killer that we finally managed to track down proved to be the climax for the evening. After that we played a bit to set up some stuff for where we want our individual characters to hopefully move forward in future sessions. Everyone agreed that the addition of the use of Drama Points helped move things along and to help create the sort of more heroic level of play that the GM was hoping for.

Also, I just want to say for the record, despite what some of her companions might erroneously believe, my magician character does not have a drinking problem. Honest.

I had to cancel my game the day before showtime. I feel awful cancelling a session, especially so close to game day but I've been working 6 days a week for a while now and needed today to catch up on a million little chores. I need to think of something to make it up to my players.

We made characters for my friend's Call of Cthulhu game where he'll run us through Masks of Nyarlathotep. This will all be 7th edition. My character is Eldrigdge Crabtree, an antiquarian from Arkham.

All my pet rats have died of old age. Couldn't replace them from our usual source because of the virus. Now I must decide if I'm getting more rats, or if I'm switching to guinea pigs or rabbits.

It's a hard choice. I still love rats, but their short lifespan and tendency toward tumors is so painful.

I'm sorry to hear that.

yea. and hello!

I do not want drama, and I am not trolling, but I am looking at swallowing my misgivings. A friend, who has had a bone marrow transplant because leukemia, is considering playing again. Online.

He is a very busy labour lawyer. And housebound

I have met him through my brother. Thirty five years ago. We all played RM together in a shared house in Winnipeg. I Dm'ed. Every damn night. It was such a Holy Grail of RPG that later in life this player BOUGHT the literary rights to that game from me.

It was a grand, which I really needed then, and nothing came of it because he was not a good literary writer. He can certainly write a CBA though; but he saved my situ then, so, yea, I have to do this out of obligation and yes, love. He is family.

It would be in my older brother's game. Family. Who I have played with since I was 8. AH, SPI then we found TSR, and then ICE. All grog talk. This particular campaign started in 84/85. I am 54 now, and have been in and out of this game over the last 35 years. Because family is complicated. Me and my brother compete too much.

That's the RM game. I will do it out of deep life roots. I won't write more becaue it might sound like a Russian Novel. Ye.

As for my AD&D game, which I play with nice folks in person who I met on the internetz, is on indefinite hiatus because the whole point is in person. A lot of actors in that group( including some very pleasant ladies of several ages) and the DM is the best table manager I have ever played with. He is very good in bringing in new people to the hobby and he is a master of table flow. It is very fun, but that is still on the shelf.

Work tells me I am slated for a covid shot this week. I guess the future really begins with that. Thanks.

We are going to try Discord. Which my teenage nephew uses to play D&D 5.0 with his friends. Any tips?

If you use a dice roller bot, have a separate channel for it. Same for background music.

A good quality mic makes everything easier.

Have character sheets, important NPCs, etc. in a shared storage website like Google Drive.

Have easy access to lots of artwork you can drag and drop into the chat. It keeps the visual aspect.

Thanks! Most odf this load is on my bro, but all advise is helpful

For D&D I'd head for three rather than one. You can play with one no sweat, but the action needs to be appropriate. Niche protection in the class system means it can be very tough to cover the basic range of adventuring skills and abilities with only a single character, or even two.

A pair of taciturn sidekicks with intelligence 6 for the player to control alongside the 'main character' will fix those issues right up. Bonus points if they use the actual sidekick rules from Tasha's Cauldron.

The less players you have, the better. Trying to track and parse a half-dozen clamoring voices and give them all the spotlight they need is exhausting for everyone involved. 1 to 3 is optimal.

I have 2 players in my PF1e Roll 20 game. This was my first time running (or using in any way) a VTT, so having a small number of players was helpful. Note, there are 5 characters in the party, accomplished via multiple characters per player and an NPC.

My Savage Worlds game has reached a point where the next session will be akin to a TV show starting a new season or a long-running comic book kicking off a new storyline. I'm working on thinking of ways to bring some fresh energy. Probably something related to a new location...

We're playing right now. Upper penninsula of Michigan, modern. New characters and new setting. Bruce's character is a game warden and my character deals in a casino and poaches deer. We are being attacked by goblins, although we don't know what they are. If we win, I'm going to point out how weird it is that these creatures left a field-dressed deer in my pickup truck.

so i killed the game, and told everyone I wasn't running another online. one of the group that had a problem focusing also mentioned a problem focusing, so that was nice. that person is there for the people interaction and isn't getting much out of the online space.

so, time for reading, video games, and refilling the creative well. when we move back to face to face, we'll be ready.

C.Js Wednesday game continued: Bruce's Stick in the mud game-warden did not accept my "the Smurfs left that deer in the pickup truck" explanation. But we have bigger problems. Some of the goblins ride giant hogs (not Harleys, wild boars) We still don't know what they are (my character is calling them Smurfs) Our guns work really well but we need to get home, or somewhere, to get more ammunition. We have met some elves but they don't know where we are either. I want to, well, I like the way they look.

My Thursday game: The team started to explore the new tunnel that let some Trolls into the city. They found that it led down to a cavern. They saw Troll tracks issuing from one tunnel. They found small tracks of high-heeled shoes going back and forth from the other two tunnels. One of those led up to the basement of the abandoned house. The other led them to a centuries-old vampire. She had Anantha in pretty bad shape when Brother Amit finished her off with his third Blast Undead of the encounter.
She had a sword with the rising golden eagle sigil of a branch of the royal house of Mes (the next nation north) and it is almost certainly magical. In her lair, there was a handsome dude in her bed in a trance of some sort. A suit of brigandine was in an armor stand near the bed. The velvet outer harness was rotted but the interlocked metal plates were as shiny as new, probably magical. It had the rising golden eagle sigil on its chest. Rodrigo, who had identified the sigil, thinks that this guy might start another war of succession in Mes (it would be the eighth) if he showed up. After determining that the guy wasn't undead, Brother Ameet determined that they should turn the guy, the armor and sword over to the Inquisition and let the Faceless God handle it. He figured it was them or the BSS.
The next day, Brother Amit got a message from the Bureau of State Security that they would like him to drop by for a little talk at his earliest convnience.

Thought of a really simple way to bring some fresh energy to my Season 5 Premiere: I can just grab a one-sheet from Pinnacle's website and drop it into the campaign for the next session!

Then, moving forward from there, I'll see about incorporating some of y'all's bonkers ideas.
