Do you know if there were any changes to their band since the last KEXP performance, which dates from 2016 IIRC?
It sounds like it, but I couldn't say for sure.

I went and took a quick look at that older KEXP video again. Unfortunately it doesn't have a listing of the band members' names. It seems that back then they didn't have a live sax player but they had a percussionist. Also, it looks like they had a different drummer, who they addressed as Superman because of the shirt he was wearing , and whose antics I found a joy to watch. I already posted that video way earlier on in this thread so I won't link to it again.

I wonder if you took MIserlou and added distortion what would you get?

Oh, Of course he did...

Yep! I think the hypothesis holds true so far: Dick Dale is the originator of what would become Heavy Metal music.

Plus, he blew the shit outta so many Fender amps, he worked with Leo Fender to create the first Fender 100w amp, an amp he finally felt captured the sound and fury that he wanted in his playing.

I don't know surf rock certainly has an influence, but it lacks the darkness in theme of proper heavy metal. Heavy metal is not just fast and loud. Surf rock being part of surf culture tended to be fairly upbeat so kind of the antithesis of heavy metal.

Now actual vintage surf rock featuring Cthulhu (goes together like peanut butter and chocolate) and I'd agree with the premise, but otherwise it was just a step along the path and one of many influences.

If we are listing influences I'd grant Modest Mussorgsky the title of dark father of heavy metal.

It doesn't get much more metal than Disney's Fantasia and Night on Bald Mountain.

60s Surf and 60s Garage and 60s Blues and Psychedelic 60s joints birthed metal. Cream+Dale/Wray+Steppenwolf+The Doors+Vanilla Fudge+The Sonics=The Roots of All Metal and anybody who says otherwise is huffing too much of the 80s to be taken seriously.

This stuff is all intertwined though. This is clearly heavy metal repaying the favor to surf rock.::honkhonk:

Nobody ever remembers Arthur Brown.

Granted for all of his influence he probably had the least metal name ever. ::honkhonk:

And now for something a little different... Rik Emmett is one of my favorite...guitarists, vocalists, songwriters, you name it. The guy is so damn talented, its not funny. He just released an album with a bunch of Triumph songs done acoustically, and for a guy who's 70 years old to be able to sing like that still, to this day, impresses the hell out of me. Not withstanding his stellar guitar work... enjoy!

A few days ago, Duran Duran released a Halloween-themed album called Danse Macarbe. Besides some new songs, there's a number of covers, as well as a couple of their older songs that they tweak and revisit.

(I like the more restrained version of Night Boat)

I just listened to it again last night. Glad I did: in part because I love the original so much, I hated Paint if Black, but with a bit of effort, I appreciate it a lot more. (Still find their version of "Crystal Ship" the most cringeworthy cover in the catalog, and their version of "Fame" by far their most underappreciated song.)
