Maybe we should invent a controversy to argue about. Tweedle Dee or Twedle Dum who do you prefer? No wait, that's politics....

Let me think here, I have fond memories of the Serial Who'd Win thread back in the day somewhere else in a long dead land of the free.

Sand Worm verses Dhole who would win? Nah, that one's too easy. Dholes are waaaaayyy bigger.

Well, I have to go get my vaccine shot today, so if I disappear that's how I died...
Got my Pfizer booster yesterday and my arms really bothering me. Bonus, had my yearly physical Wednesday. Just found out a few hours ago that I have blood in my stool sample. Joy. I had a colonoscopy consultation set up for December to then set an appointment. My doctor wants me to get done this month. Ugh.

After that Kevin Costner Robin Hood movie, I don’t see why they would bother remaking it.

Yeah, after seeing Waterworld I was like "I never need to see another action movie, they reached perfection", but then I was proven wrong when The Postman came out

Mostly I think we need to game more and more variety even things we've given up on. I want to go back and play V&V and see if current me likes it or not. I want to try Swordbearer and see if I missed something good. I want to admit I don't have a ton of time like I used to but I am not willing to completely give up in complex games.

Honestly I want to play AD&D 1st edition and try some of the stuff we just ignored back in the day and see what I think about it.

That's why I need Dumarest Dumarest, Nobby-W Nobby-W and all of you who I can't recall at the moment that are insane enough to run multiple games. It's made my life much better. Thanks to all of you.

I feel you, though I lean more 2E, V&V, and others...

Whatever the game. I mean whatever it is that you want to play I want to help you(all) baring maybe a few that just don't work for me.

I’ve actually been a little worried lately at the number of people who’ve dropped off. Some I’m legitimately wondering if they are physically alright and others I’m just wondering if they are just burned out being online because of some vague/not vague posts they made at one point or another.

This is peak crunch time at work for a number of people I think. Once things slow down I plan to start some review threads!

I owned and ran Sword Bearer, I'll write it up.

We should all work to keep the forums friendly and welcoming to as wide a range of gamers as possible.

We've seen the rabbit hole that argument goes down elsewhere. The notion is laudable the result is a witch hunt. We should all work to keep the forums interesting and avoid freaking out over whatever lunatic hallucinations have inspired the latest cause of the day.

I like the idea but realistically all you can do is set ground rules for behavior interaction and hope people pick a place to hang out where those rules work for them. All the various sites out there are working for someone. This one works for me. I don't want the others shut down but I don't really want their brand of welcoming here either.

I think for me, it would be to sit down and really play AD&D 2e. I snagged most of it but really didn't run it because by the time it was releasing I was firmly entrenched in running GURPS, BattleTech etc. I played some AD&D 1st edition after I stopped running it but even that petered out by 1990-ish. Anyhow, I'd love to see how AD&D 2e ended up playing in comparison to 1e sometimes.

Which 2nd edition would you want to try? The early on before splats? The one after splats but without Skills and Powers etc or the final one with everything?

Good question. From what I've read it sounded like the later on version fixed some problems with the initial release of 2e, but then the splat books added more problems though they fixed or added some good stuff as well. I guess it would be one of those were I'd want to play 2e first release to get the baseline on how it played. Then like a year later move to the 2.5e or whatever you want to refer to the later part of its release. lol. I'm just too fascinated by mechanics and how they work and how they compare to previous editions of a rpg. It's definitely a problem for me, a fun one though.

The thing is with splats and toolkits (Spells & Powers, Combat and Tactics, etc.) A lot of that is just options, NONE of them should have been presented IMHO as options FOR players to browse like a catalog of choice things. Instead, I feel deeply, the GM should use those resources when building their world. "I'm running a game set in a frozen taiga, here are kits that fit, common weapons from the area, and so on."

No D&D game has to leave a given region if done well, the whole travel the world type of adventure is fine now and then too--but "what kind of world is it?" I especially liked how the Historical sourcebooks handled presenting settings during those time periods and functionally became a toolbox for running games with that feel. For me? I like most of the base stuff just fine. I really love psionics, but hated the handling of powers to fill slots in a book for the psionics book "hear light?" the heck is that even useful for? I mean seriously, it got just silly.

Though, when I simply decided to for example run my favorite D&D campaign world Birthright, I used only the resources that fit /that/ feel. I didn't allow kits that didn't fit, monsters that didn't fit. I even ejected a few that the campaign world said were alright--because I liked the rare aspect of monster "types" that aren't tied to the blooded beyond a very very few. I grew my love of Darksun and Planescape later. But things like the Cavalier? Not happening in Dark Sun.

Flat out I learned that some stuff just didn't work well together, and so I didn't allow it. I built things together. I wasn't going to have Cavaliers fight side by side with Amazon--it didn't feel like they fit the same time period of a world (maybe if I did it like Wonder Woman, a lost island of Greekish women) but as a thing /any/ player can take whenever? No. Just. No.

For some reason, I initially misread this thread's title as "Where's My Favourite Pornstar?".
Imagine my dismay only to read that we are discussing missing some Absent Friends here in the forum
If Dumarest Dumarest was here, he would likely follow this up with a posting of a tantalising Pulp Noir Femme Fatale, or something like that, heh heh

You clearly have never seen Sir Arthur Conan Doyles Lost World. They fit everything into that plateau!

I'm not one for partaking in threads about games I'll never play or mechanics I'm unlikely to use. Likewise I'm not egocentric enough to think people are interested in the half assed games I run. Now if you want to talk amateur attempts at writing comics or just why can't you get off your arse and start that damned screenplay thats bouncing around inside your head, I'll be posting like a mofo.

Mods - this thread has strayed from its original topic and now we're seeing some interesting discussion on other matters. Maybe it's time to split it into a new thread in the games forum so people can see it?

I haven't been posting much because I've been really sad since my brother died. It takes all my energy just to make sure I eat, sleep, bathe, and go to work. I even canceled this week's Savage Worlds game, and I almost never cancel games.

I don't know what types of threads would engage readers in general, but I personally am much more engaged by something specific and concrete, like "ten traps for your sci fi adventure!" than something more general and abstract, like "is an rpg a story?"

Oh, and the very silly threads. I love those.

Yeah sometimes the funny escape low energy crap is whats needed when life feels like shit.

Let me know if you want to talk.

Part of the problem is that everything's gotten too glossy and expensive for my liking. I loved gaming when it said, "create your own damn world you lazy ass," I really don't care for the obsession with licensed properties. Show me some interesting mechanics or some world you made yourself. Most licensed properties are too narrow to support much of a game. Really, kitchen sink is important to long term campaigns. But I've always loved the little independent products. Give me a Thieves World, Midkemia Press, High Fantasy, Wizard's Realm, Villains and Vigillantes over a bloated, glossy, 300 page monstrosity any day of the week. I guess I have the same problem with movies these days too, too many franchise reboots. Tell another story, good grief, I love King Arthur and Robin Hood but could the movie industry please, please, please just make something else?

To bring it back to the sliding post counts, how do we bring the gaming discussion back to life?
Similar to my interest here but do love to post silly or irreverent replies.

Have an interest in game mechanics, VTT, forgotten games, world building, adventure design and the like.

Yeah I miss the loose days of world-building as you go.
These days it is canon settings (often preexisting franchises), and a bunch of people collectively working out what The One True Way to play it.

This brings to mind that there was a creative poster on BRPCentral several years ago called 'tooley1chris' who was prominent with posting about his home brew rules and settings for Magic World.

Unfortunately Magic World got shelved by Chaosium, and tooley1chris was asked to take some of his work down for potential infringement - he pretty much recreated the AD&D Monster Manual (including some TSR artwork) except had it stated up in BRP stats, and this and some other work was posted in the BRP Central Downloads section.

Tooley1chris kinda drifted and faded away from BRPCentral after that, and the previous casual tone of that forum started waning after that, become more and more rules and lore heavy.

I always thought tooley1chris would eventually show up here, as the vibe of RPGPub would suit his posting style.

Having posters like him are pretty good in forums; ones who can pump out regular material and such. He was very creative, and reminded me of the days when I first started and realised I could literally just make entire settings and content up

One of the projects that we suggested at BRP Central many moons ago was to collaboratively work on expanding the setting that was provided in the Magic World book, as it was only one chapter of material that was ripe for GMs to make their own. I think that idea went no where after Magic World became a dead product for Chaosium, and tooley1chris was no longer actively posting, so it just died a death.

I've often thought that we could possibly do something similar here. The Lingua Franca is Mythras, so working on expanding some of the Mythras settings like The Realm or Meeros could be interesting

I certainly don't have time to spear-head anything like this, but could contribute time-to-time

Would not even need to be The Realm or Meeros, I just thought they might provide some decent framework.

Anyway, just brainstorming some ideas here when I'm meant to be working

The main reason I write game systems is that I feel that being locked to someone else's IP is crippling. The OGL is a brilliant idea but unfortunately it's D&D which I don't really care for. I once enthusiastically described my "I won't sue you" policy to someone who asked if they could code an alien generator for Galaxies In Shadow. I think I scared them off and they thought I was an asshole. I guess I should have just said yes.

But having written a bit for ICE and tried to get into working for SJG all I can say is that I will never waste my time on a property I don't own and control out right ever again. I would love there to be some popular standard for independent design work but I don't think the egos involved would ever allow it. Mine included.

This is my situation, too; I've been too busy to post much or even read the forums in depth recently.

Yea, a lot of DMs are unimaginative and think they have to shoehorn every player option into a generic kitchen sink setting instead of curating them to fit their vision.
