Would an Image heavy thread unduly tax the site?

I was considering trying a thread that would contain a large amount of images (via links) posted. I didn't know if such thread would put strain on the site or cause performance issues and wanted to ask first

Linked images, no. The only issue there is that the thread would be slow to load, but wouldn't cause any actual strain.

We have some image heavy threads like the Hamburger and Dank Memes threads. They load relatively slowly but are otherwise good.
