It isn't my favourite approach, but you could use the "players roll all dice" gimmick, so a Joe controlled by the player uses active values while everyone else uses passive...

I probably wouldn't, but it's an option.

Given all rolls are just two dice - check successes - done, I'd probably drop the passives values if they're bothering you.

I’ve considered that, but I also think that some things should be passive, like if a character is sneaking around and somebody isn’t actively on watch.

I’ll have to give this some thought.

I think I’m going to add a Willpower stat because I have situations where fear and grit checks defaulted to Intellect, which isn’t so clean. I also made all the passive values 2 for now.

I like the damage rules. The formatting is very clean, easy to read. System seems very straightforward so far (not counting the Difficulty ratings, which definitely need thorough explanations) , though I wonder about needing multiples of so many different die types for weapon damage.

Thank you for checking it out. I could probably make the die types similar for weapon groups, absolutely. I’m all for keeping things simpler. Like maybe D8s for firearms. As far as the damage rules go, I’m going to be filling it out some more. I’m going to add rules for mental strain as well.

I mean, the game is already a step die system, so I don;t think the multiple types is an issue, but when I see say 4d8, I think why not just d8x4? I dunno, that may just be my skewed perspective though, as I have like maybe two full sets of polyhedrals on hand, and then bunches of d6s an d10s. But I guess mst players, especially thse that regularly play D&D, would have more on hand.

Anyhow, it's just the thoughts that came to my mind while reading, make the game you want and don't let me influence you too much.

I actually did change the tables. For example, most of the firearms now use D8s instead of various types. I mean, it all needs to be tested some more, but it looks like it will work OK.

Definitely interesting. And yes, the damage mechanic seems pretty innovative and interesting.

Thanks. So that’s what was hanging me up for months! How do I handle damage? Indidn’t want to use hit points and wanted to tie in the damage successes to the resistance values cleanly somehow. Then by chance I was working on skills some more and was reading a website for the Traveller SRD and saw a section on damage and a lightbulb went off over my head. What if I take that for inspiration? It worked. Traveller is one of those games that never quite clicked with me but I have to thank it for that reason.

Filling in the combat section with rules for healing and then going to hit up the skills section some more. I’ll probably start kicking some vehicle rules after that.

I also made comments available on the Google doc itself if anyone has any specific questions.

I’m working on vehicle write-ups now. Got about six vehicles finished or in the process. Vehicle combat is going to be slightly different from characters. When a vehicle is damaged, a system will be effected (whether it’s weapons, engine, safety features, etc). When a number of systems fail, the vehicle will be considered dead and need to be repaired to become operable again. I’m taking some cues from WEG D6 with this.

This all looks great. Can I request a supplement for Action Force??
Thank you for the compliment! I’m still getting around to the vehicles and equipment section some more.

It looks better if you read it in print format!

I don’t know much about Action Force but if I have any free time after I get this finished I will consider it.

Action Force was a toy line and comic in the UK in the 80s; their enemy was Baron Ironblood and the Red Shadows. There must have been some IRL corporate reshuffling because suddenly in the comic Ironblood decided to liquidate the Shadows and relaunch himself as Cobra Commander. And it was never as good! (Or maybe I just got older.)

Baron Ironblood is an awesome name for a bad guy.

The less impressive early 80s reality... they were a lot like Star Wars toys. One of the vehicles was a reskinned Star Wars toy, IIRC.

Talking of the vehicles, for sheer balls-out mentalness, the Roboskull takes some beating:

"It's good, but how about... more guns?"

Cobra Commander was a crazy used car salesman before he started Cobra, so I don’t think he and the Baron really work as the same person. I could see Baron Ironblood being an acquaintance or even a relative of the Baroness, since she was from an upper-class European family who became radicalized after her brother was killed in Vietnam on a humanitarian mission.

It's cobracanonical...

You have got to love the line "Yet they have infected me in so many other ways..."

Anyway, back to the thread!

I added Doc, Shipwreck, Tunnel Rat, and Copperhead.

What I’ve decided to do is expand character entries through 1987, up until the start of the COBRA Civil War. The island will get a map and background information for a GM and players to relive that major event in G.I.Joe history.

I’ve also added new entries for Zarana, Zandar, Croc Master and Fred VII.

Hopefully the game will be able to recreate this scene:

Because without knowing what is revealed on the next page, I'm assuming the return arrow shot nailed the driver in the back through the vehicle, which causes it to skid off the bridge. Which is badass.

Also, I'm highly amused that a global super-terrorist organization is apparently using a VW mini-bus as their getaway vehicle.

Volkswagen. It’s the people’s car!

And that’s my favorite stormshadow look of them all. Best figure produced.

Yeah it would be doable. I think it’s reasonable that the scholar advantage he has in martial arts would let him attempt to catch an arrow and it would be an Acrobatics check. Storm-Shadow has a 5 for Acrobatics so he would be rolling against Zartan’s shot.

Storm Shadow has a Dexterity and Awareness (base skills for Acrobatics) of D12 each so he would probably be able to get possibly 8-10 successes. His check would be against Zartan’s attack roll. Very doable if he could see it coming, which he can since it’s right in front of him.

This is similar to Snake-Eyes catching Storm Shadow’s sword in #21 except that situation wouldn’t be quite as difficult since it’s a bigger item.

Storm Shadow was canonically the best bowman in the entire G.I.Joe franchise. So this was right up his alley. Zartan was really good too, even without his sonar amplifier equipment. He killed Serpentor with a rainbow shot. But he wasn’t a ninja and didn’t have all the moves.

What a great page! And one of the coolest 'catch the arrow, fire the arrow' tricks I've ever seen.
