Moderation Discussion Thread of 2024

Best Selling RPGs - Available Now @ DriveThruRPG.com
Is it weird that I don't recognize that name?

They showed up periodically over the last year and tended to stick to one or two threads at a time. We have several posters like that, where if your interests don't intersect, you could easily never interact. But, yeah, "four pages of being an asshole" isn't too much of an exaggeration. They could occasionally seem to calm down and act like a normal person (from what I saw mostly when it came to talking about Prowlers & Paragons, though I don't know if they had any hand in making that game or they're just a very enthusiastic fan).

Anyways, if anyone misses Domina, they're a regular(ish) poster at therpgsite, and I think that forum is far better suited to their preferred style of discourse.

So I found it suspicious that the Pub went down around the time these comments started. Coincidence!?

Pretty sure it only takes a fraction of the consciousness of Doom's stapedius muscle to power the pub. That's exactly how great Doom's consciousness is.

Hey, I see the thread about religion in D&D got locked up. I hope nobody felt hurt or offended for it. If that's the case it wasn't my intention at all. Just saying.

Saw that the other one was removed too. Someone must’ve complained. Seemed pretty benign to me. Unless it’s just a precaution for the no politics/no religion precept. Too bad. I appreciate any opportunity to mention Birthright!

mod insight Any time religion has come up, we have had posts where real-life religions and faiths have been mentioned and people’s opinions of them have been shared. Some of these opinions are what I would consider blanket statements and they aren’t acceptable. This leads to hurt feelings and thread closures. We are still discussing it backstage.

Birthright's a fantastic setting that needs more love, feel free to start a thread on it.

 It’s a shame it’s like that.

There’s so much fertile ground for creativity in the subject.

Yeah, it would be nice to discuss good handling of religion in RPGs (the other thread subject) since it’s fairly significant in some of them.

Yeah, lets not go there shall we? Someone might very reasonably believe the exact same thing about more modern religions and that's definitely a no go topic on the Pub,
So, ancient religious are against the rules? I don't even see modern religions mentioned (although I can see why it would be). So, is the rule here "no discussing ancient religions & beliefs"?

Think about it for second. What do you need to believe in order to say "of course, because there were no such gods". I'll give you some time to digest the idea, it's not complicated. Then read my reply again. It has nothing to do with ancient religions being out of bounds.

I said that wasn't the rule or the point and I said go read you post again and think about it. We aren't in the business of saying of course that god doesn't exist here, like yours is the only one. Stop being obtuse.

I'm not being obtuse nor saying what YOU are in the business of. Stop being evasive! If there are no rules just mod feelings then that is fcked. Make a rule and post it.

If we have board members that are pagans or Asatru or somthing tellng them their gods don't exist violates the rules as much as telling a Christian theirs doesn't, is it that hard a concept?

We aren't making an infinite list of rules. Looking around we've found that leads to a lot of line dancing which is just a constant moderation headache. We have two main rules. No politics(and by association be very careful around religion) and behave nice like you would in a real Pub. Bars bounce people when they get competitive and disruptive. Don't be that person.

I'm behaving like I do IRL. I'm not a sheep. So, it's mod by feelings/fiat of a general ruleset. Got it. I can live with that. Just warn me when I go over whatever the unpublished line it.

That can work but it's going to have to be a two way street. Your going to have to read the room a little more to try to keep from crossing the line. We don't want to be babysitting anymore that you want to be babysat.

That's what I was trying to do. Should I be more specific next time?

The problem is that modern religions have their roots in antiquity. Christianity itself is two thousand years old but Zorasterism is still a practiced religion and it's probably got another two thousand years seniority. If I had to make a rule it would be, "respect the beliefs of others". Yes even that stupid, silly one. It's a matter of respecting people more than a matter of respecting the beliefs. You can debate and question respectfully. If you need to take a huge dump on things that matter to others it says more about you than it does about them. Likewise if you take someone else's reasonably presented ideas as deeply offensive and insulting it's probably a you problem.

We're grumpy and old but we can still behave like grown ups.
