"Simple concern for our fellow sophonts. We saw the smoke and thought you might be at risk. If all is alright we leave you. How heavily armed were they?"

He replies "Mainly rifles and blasters I think. Didn't really see. They came in, drove 'round a bit, shot the place up and threw a fire bomb in the barn here. Then they rode away. Dunno what they were doin'."

OOC: This seems a bit odd, like maybe some sort of attempt at recon-by-fire.

"If you're good we should get back to our friends and make sure that their ok too. We can all come back and help you if you want." Twitch says

The man replies "That'd be right kind of yer. I think we could do with some help on the barn."

You ride off and meet back up with the crawlers with nothing eventful happening.

"Guys we got time to help a farmer out? Gang of thugs came through and trashed his homestead. I gotta bad feeling they're "friends" of ours so helping him out seems the least we could do." Twitch asks the group when we get back.

Steevo sets to work trying to put out the barn fire and assessing the damage.

ooc: do I need to roll? If so, what would it fall under.

"I think we should help" Ida says looking to Okon and Anvil.

"The excavation doesn't come first in this case"

There is some damage from the fire bomb - little more than a molotov cocktail really. It looks like it was just thrown in the door. The attack looks little more than harassment or maybe some sort of recon-by-fire to see the numbers and armament.

OOC: It occurs to you that there may be still be someone watching.

You pitch in and help clean up the mess. One other thing you notice looking around the farm is that the satellite antenna has been sabotaged, crudely pulled down and smashed. That would suggest an attempt to isolate the farmers so they can't call for help.

It's also clear that most of the farm buildings are partially or fully underground. There is a large central pit with an awning over it as well as some structures partially above ground. A PV array, a solar still, some large tunnel houses and a few other items are all that's above ground.

After finishing up, it looks like the damage is superficial but they thank you for your help and offer you a late lunch. You're introduced to Lar and Cormoran (Cory). They have a couple adolescent children who look somewhere in their late teens, who they introduce as Jethro and Daise, plus a couple of farm hands in their twenties who are introduced as Rob and Cletus.

"That satellite damage new?" Twitch asks. "Don't like the idea of you all having no communication. Anyway we can keep in touch?"

Lar replies "Yes, they did it. Must have pulled it down." He pauses and asks "Can you repair it?"

OOC: It's pretty badly mangled. It might or might not be repairable.

Kal helps here and there with some lifting but is distracted at the idea of this crew being close by, so he's scanning the horizon as often as he can.

You scan about the area. You're in an old wadi (dry river bed) that must have some artesian water close enough to the surface for a moisture farm. Up the sides of the valley are mesas that are a few hundred metres tall. While looking about you spot a glint of optics from the top of the mesa.

The owner of the optics obviously realises you've spotted him and runs up and over the top of the mesa. You estimate he's less than 1km away but you can't see an obvious path up to the top of the mesa, although it may be climbable.

"Well, that should work part way for now. I'm afraid that it may not be fully functional without some new parts."

ooc: rig roll 5,4,1

5 = Success with reduced effect. You manage to bash the antenna back into shape and re-mount it. However, the mount isn't 100% stable and the signal from the satellite is intermittent. It works but it's not totally reliable. The carrier often drops and you have to climb onto the roof and re-boresight it. It will work in a pinch but they'll probably have to get a new antenna.

Kal rejoins the others in a hurry, and pants "Someone was spotting us from that mesa over there." He bends over to pant and catch his breath, pointing roughly in the direction. "That the direction they came from?" He asks generally of the residents.

OOC: The tracks come up the valley the same way you came and exit the same way.

Lar replies "No but here is a trail to the top of the mesa on the other side. It comes out down the next valley. Why is he watching us?"

Kal squints into the distance. "Good question. Not sure."

Getting into earshot of his own group, Kal pipes up, "either they are the same banditos that hit this farmstead, or someone is specifically following us. Okon, did anyone else know the intent of this caravan?"

"Will we preemptively pay them a visit? Or just head to the site and be ready for them there?"

Lar says you might be able to get around to the valley entrance on your trail bikes and track or intercept him. Okon is pretty sure that everybody who does know where you're going can be trusted with that.

OOC but we're all at the farm right?

OOC: I will defer to our driver and way-guide to investigate, and keep watch in the meantime.

Ida will head out on the trail bike for interception.
"Let's go!" Twitch grins.
You ride out of the valley on your trail bikes and see a dust cloud kicked up by someone riding off down the trail. If you wish to pursue you can make a HELM roll each. This is a RISKY roll with STANDARD effect. The higher result comes off the clock.

OOC my highest was a 3 but I'm not sure if my pilot ability helps here and if so how to use it. I have to look up the rules again when I have more time

OOC: the 'Ace Pilot' ability means your roll gets an extra level of effect on a success if you're resisting (i.e. in some sort of contested roll). In this case a success will tick an extra segment off the chase clock - 3 segments instead of 2.
OOC: Highest result was a 4
Best result was 4. 4 = Success with reduced effect. You start to gain on your quarry.

Quarry's result was 3; 3 = lose this opportunity for action. Your quarry fails to make any headway on you.

Clock6-2.png Target gets away (you've chipped a segment off the clock). Get the clock down to 0 and you've caught up.

After helping with tidying up, you're invited inside for a meal. Cormoran says it's the least they can do. They take you down through the garage that you've helped clean up; there's an ancient crawler and a 4x4 rover that have some fire damage, plus bits of assorted other junk. At the back of the garage there's a wide corridor that goes past a workshop with workbenches and some power tools. There are also shelves full of junk and other tooling. On the other side of the corridor is a storeroom that has various drums with labels like fertiliser or chicken feed, plus a few stacked crates.

You come out into the central pit, which has a large awning covering most of it and providing shade. You go past a couple of cellars. One looks like it's being used for making a local cactus wine that you've heard about but never summoned up the courage to try. The other looks like it's mainly storing flattened packing crates and has a desk at the far end. The pit has a few plastic seats and other bits of domestic stuff around it, and a small shed in the corner.

You're led in through a kitchen and into a room with a dining table. Everyone except Cletus sits down and some food is brought out - baked pastries of some sort. These turn out to be re-heated beetle-goat pie, which is quite nice, and accompanied by a local beer. Cletus takes a slice of pie and goes back out to keep a watch. He's carrying a slug thrower - you've only see a rifle and a shotgun here at the farm. Okon gets Joshi to go up and join him, and make sure the crawlers are ready to move out.

Cormoran casually asks you what brings you out into the wastes.

"We're helping scout some moisture dense areas, to see if we can parcel out the land for a future community or farm." Kal plays it off like it's no big deal. "Just trying to make some cred, y'know?"

Lar chips in: "There have been rumours about the bandits - it's a big worry, what have you seen?" He appears to have taken what you said at face value.

@Seadna, Bunch Bunch - You're slowly gaining on your quarry. What do you do - continue pursuing?
