Far West 12th Anniversary

Best Selling RPGs - Available Now @ DriveThruRPG.com
Ten bucks for six months....for a roleplaying game (not including the TV show/anime/comic book/trading cards/minis game/MMO/FPS/Netflix series/Sountrack - that one did happen/novels)?

Fuck. No

Man in retrospect there were so many red flags about Far West, but I, like so many others, was caught up in the genuine coolness of the idea and the world hinted at in the teaser art from the KS. It could have been something awesome in different hands. Oh well. :-(

Reason number one, as to why I don't back Kickstarters. I don't fund promises, I buy products.

Honestly, it is more a GMS being an incompetent and bad person that a crownfunding problem. And being a product before is finalized is as old as buying an existing product (and the contrat is legaling binding in either case - I give the cash, give me product - if you do not deliver the product on the specified dead line, give the cash back).

But I am not an apoligist for CF, KS and whatever else. I just have one bad experience with it, so the system works in 99 % of the time, but when it fails, it tends to be quite a spectacle ...

Someone read that full page advertisement for the Paragon Society of Wargamers in Dragon Magazine 109.

I mean, it could just be the nature of the beast, but the bullet points being hit and the phrasing in this little ad seem very inspired by that old Dragon Magazine mystery.

I've seen too many broken promises, and yes, I don't count not releasing on time. Most Kickstarters (and crowdfunded projects) never make it out on time. And if they can't do that, what else can't they fulfill?

I'm glad most people never find out the latter, but I'm not willing to gamble on it. But like everything else, I ain't gonna tell anyone how to spend their money.

Lots of people in many fields are like that. Not everyone is cut out to manage and plan projects or run their own companies. He's probably better suited to working as a freelancer or as part of a team.

Sure. Lots of people are like that. I know I am.

Which is why I don’t launch my own projects

yes, yes it was. But being an asshole on forums isn't a condemning offense to me, I've been there myself.

He was actively trying to play gatekeeper on professional networking services, silencing anyone he felt wasn't as much of a "real publisher" as he was-- including people who'd been plugging at it for longer than he has.

The man has been an active, willful detriment to the culture of our industry and our hobby for over a decade. The Kickstarter was just consumers' first exposure to what an entitled, narcissistic piece of shit he is.

edit: Gotta admit, only reason I'm still batting a thousand on Kickstarter was that I was homeless when Far West was running. Much as I despise the man, I've never had a problem with his work and Far West was exactly right up my alley. Do not want to think about how angry I would be about the fact, if I had let Gareth Michael Skarka pick my fucking pocket.

Well, I'm not going to defend him, I was just saying that I can deal with narcissistic assholes without feeling any need to hold them accountable ( I generally think the best punishment for most people is they have to live with themselves), it isn't until they cross into the area of crime or actively hurting others that I'll feel the need to speak against them or call for ostracization ( hence Zak)

GMS, like Zak and Whitman are people that role players, especially those new to the hobby, need to be protected against and warmed about. I don't think I need to warn anyone that there are assholes online

That's fair. The only people that really need to be warned about GMS are professionals who might consider going into business with him.

I've been actively trying to avoid commenting on this thread, for obvious reasons, but I am also keenly interested in anything that might come out of it. I think that I had the right idea the first time, and I should try to get back to it.

I've read plenty of people's experiences with the guy that confirm this notion.

Yep. They are different skill sets and require different temperaments than doing the day-to-day work of the company or organization, whether it is creative work, technical work, etc. There are people out there who can do both, but many more who only think they can.

Hey. Hey you guys.

It's been a year since the last update on the Kickstarter page. The update that said he wouldn't be updating the Kickstarter page anymore, and would be updating elsewhere.

I don't think he's updated anywhere else either.

Wild. Ride. Yo.

This thread is a trip. So the dude was just outright lying? Has Cubicle 7 ever said anything? How do you stretch $40k over 10 years?
cubicle 7 got off the train way back.

My guess is that he spent the money on 'transmedia' thinking he could sell this as a media/tv/cartoon/anime license or seomthing. None of which materialised and money got spent.

Uh, you don’t? That money is almost certainly long gone.
Yeah that last one was mostly a joke. Still just blows my mind that he would just promise the book within a month if he really had nothing written. The easier lie would be to just say it’s being worked on.

didn't a few years back GMS randomly decide to restart using the D6 system?

Another blatant dodge that only proves he had nothing or next to nothing written.
I won't lie, I'm tempted to take OSRIC and create a Kung-Fu Wild West game just to say there's one out there.
Can't we all just agree now that the whole "kung fu Western" thing is possibly even worse than the "Weird West" thing?
That's apples and oranges! Totally different situation. I mean, Gareth got sick a couple of times. And depressed. And then meanies on the Internet piled on criticizing him for lying about his progress and delivery dates, which slowed him down further. And then he got busy tweeting his political views and had no time for work. Except for the various jobs he took because the Far West Kickstarter money and the Buckaroo Banzai preorder money ran out. It's like you want him to starve and live on the streets. You guys are basically forcing him to lie and obfuscate and violate Kickstarter update rules and do anything but work on Far West. So, really, it's the backers who are to blame for not getting their game!

I wonder if you compiled all his tweets from the last 9 years how large a book that would be...
It'd be interesting to comb through and count and categorize the baldfaced lies, deflections, obfuscations, and mutually contradictory statements. Who volunteers? :eat:
