Real Life and What's Happening...

Venues and events are opening up for people who can provide proof of vaccination so my upcoming 4 day weekend is packed. I bought tickets for a party boat, we're checking out an 80's club, and we're taking a mini single day road trip to a bee farm. If I can at all fit it in, we want to pay our respects to the "mayor" of Little Tokyo. Oh and my Carcosa game is on Sunday.

Another little milestone - I now have a working KVM switch through the new monitor and I can get it to display the same image on the laptop screen and the TV in the sitting area in front of the desk. I can put up maps on the TV now and see what's displaying on the laptop screen.

Also the KVM switch works pretty seamlessly, which is a massive improvement on the DVI-USB switches I tried to get working a decade or so ago. That experience was enough to put me off KVM switches on digital connections for quite a while. I really don't know if I was doing something wrong, but I tried several KVM switches including a Gefen and an Avocent one. The resulting setup was terribly unreliable and required shutting down and restarting the whole kaboodle including two or three computers to get it back online.

This just works. I can switch the monitor, and the signal from the laptop multiplexes the keyboard, mouse, audio and video over the USB-C connection. The USB-C connection also supplies 60W to charge the laptop.

I'm pleased to say that this actually seems to work.

And now here I am finishing the post from the other computer.

Went to the Japanese gardens and got to use the tea house (Chashitsu 茶室) for a proper tea ceremony. Learned that there'll be a big outdoor candle festival at night in two months time where an orchestra will play stuff from Anime classicals like Berserk, Naruto, One Piece, Evangelion, etc.

Ran 6 miles this morning. Longest run of the year. How did half the year go by so fast? I have not been hitting my goals very well.
Felt good though, and I feel like I'm in good shape for training for my next half marathon. I'm usually pretty bad about cross training but I'm going to try to get a lot more biking in this summer. Fortunately we're moving in a few weeks to a very bike friendly area, so that should help.

If you ever see me running, please shoot whatever is chasing me. Seriously that's cool though. I've gotten onto the path as I like to call it. I've started eating better. I take a multi vitamin everyday. I walk around the neighborhood monday through friday. Followed by working out with a kettle bell, and then working out with a sledge hammer. I don't keep track of my weight. But I have gone down at least one pant size. I feel better and stronger. Definitely gaining more definition in my arms.

Had to put the cat down today. He was 19 years old. It was time. His thyroid was super out of whack so we'd already scheduled a person to put him down. His last day he didn't eat. He just wanted to drink. We made him as comfortable as we could before he went down.

It's interesting to see how the kids (3,5,7,9) view death. Varied from (The kitties dead! Gleeful but no clue what that means, ambivalent, tears, Less than nice)

Staying in Wallace, ID for the weekend. Doing the route of the Hiawatha bike ride. The Airbnb we have is amazing. My son went feral immediately in the backyard.
Single handedly one of my most favorite places on earth. I have been wanting to do the Hiawatha for a good long while now, but never had the time.

We were going to last year but fire got in the way. We chose early this year before the fires come. Place we just got back from eating at was good, though the food was incredibly slow. I think they need another cook in the kitchen, to be honest. Even my normally closed lipped niece is perking up

Are you going to hit the Pulawski Tunnel?

Wife was just looking at that. She said it was a historical trail. I said like the trail of tears?

there is also a zip line over here and there are some bikes at the Airbnb we maybe could take to the bike park. Quite a few options.

One of the guys in my gaming group just had a heart attack followed by some strokes. He's paralyzed on his left side of the body. He was a real gym monster so this is not going to be easy for him. Not like it's easy for anyone but just going to add to his depression. Guess I'm starting to enter that stage of life.
He didn't make it. He passed away today.

I’m very sorry, brother. There are no good words that really are a balm here.

Yes, I suppose many of us are “entering that age”
Demographically, this board is heavily there. It’s sad, but it is what it is. We hold on as best we can and try to make the times as happy as possible.

I think the part that bothers me the most is his wife is an E.R. Nurse. She's been working all through Covid and this hits her right as life is getting closer to normal here. That and his two girls losing their dad.

I’d recommend bringing your own bike or renting from someplace else. My wife had hers break down twice, and they have a ski tied range of options for shorter folks. the other three bikes were fine, but my son and I both really wanted our own for different reasons.

The trail itself was gorgeous and fun, though the last half is largely straight, flat, and through forest. A worthwhile trip for sure.

I’m feeling like an idiot at the moment. I got in some overtime last week, so I thought I’d buy some stuff for a food drive that started yesterday. My bill seemed high, but I bought groceries for my parents as well, so I didn’t think anything of it.

I got home and it looked like the register clerk had screwed up, scanning an expensive item over and over again, so I effectively paid triple the cost on some groceries.

Then I went through the groceries and found I was a moron, having somehow grabbed more of the expensive food for the drive than I thought I had, and having confused one item or another, so the sale price didn’t go into effect.

Someone is going to eat high on the hog due to my stupidity.

As of last Thursday, I am now officially fully vaccinated, so according to the C.D.C. and Ohio Health guidelines, I no longer have to wear a mask indoors in public areas (although I have been, anyway).

On Wednesday of this week, all public health orders in Ohio expire. So in legalistic terms, my vaccination status will matter for less than a week.

Wallace is on my list of places to visit. It holds a large place in forest fire history, there was an epic effort made to save the town during the great fires of 1910. Ed Pulaski came out of those fires as a legendary character with the one of the largest known collections of scrotum brass.

So, the raccoons I talked about before have become a regular fixture of my evenings. Between 10-12 every night they show up and craw in my window and sit on my couch until I feed them. I bought a big box of dog treats they like alot.

A few days ago I was in the bathroom and came out to find them in my bedroom, sniffing around, I guess looking for me. It startled them, and one tried to climb up my dresser and knocked a bunch of warhammer figures lining the top on their head, which startled them more and they dashed for the window in a panic. The other climbed my bedroom door and hung on top of it a foot away from my face while I laughed ad asked him "what are you doing?"

Other than that, it's mostly been routine. I hear them enter through my window, I get up and say hello and get some dog treats and then they crawl back out onto the porch and wait for me to open the door to feed them. I usually give them three helpings, and sometimes they hang out on the porch afterwards playing and grooming each other.

Then last night they didn't show up. I was a little concerned, but it's not that unusual, I'd say they miss a night about once a week. Probably because they find a nice stash of trash somewhere closer to home or something.

But just now, a few minutes ago, I heard a noise and came out to find one of them on my couch. 2:45 in the afternoon. I was really surprised, I'd never seen them out in the day before. His tail was gone - cut in half, and he was limping, one of his back legs obviously injured. He was skiddish but I fed him. I'm worried now. I mean, I know there's a million things that could have happened. Could have been hit by a car or whatever. There are coyotes in the parks here as well. And Raccoons don't last long in the wild anyways - their life expectancy is only 2-3 years. But it's got me very concerned. I wish I could do more. They're not my pets but...I always want to take care of animals.

Hate to be That Guy but as you’ve realized — they are not your pets, or anyone’s pets. They are wild animals that can attack and carry disease. I don’t know if I’d entertain them as guests inside the house.
I had my fun with cougars in my 20s...

Now I like girls a bit younger than me
I don’t really see myself beside anyone other than Mrs. The Butcher until the end of my days, but I’m pretty sure I’d be unable to stand more than a few minutes with a woman under 30, maybe 35. I have a bunch of female residents all on their mid-to-late twenties and they are grating.
