Pelgrane Press announced that the Kickstarter campaign for 13th Age RPG 2E will go live on Tuesday, May 7th. Per Rascal News:

Pelgrane Press has announced that on May 7 it will launch the crowdfunding campaign for 13th Age Second Edition, the D20-rolling heroic fantasy roleplaying game by designers Rob Heinsoo and Jonathan Tweet with art by Lee Moyer and Aaron McConnell. Published in 2013, 13th Age won the 2014 Silver ENnie award for Best Rules and was a nominee for Best Game and Product of the Year.

13th Age Second Edition will see the game split into two books, accompanied by a new four-panel Gamemaster's screen illustrated by Moyer.

The 13th Age Second Edition Player's Handbook is expected to be approximately 240 pages, and will include character creation, kin, classes, backgrounds, and combat rules.

The 13th Age Second Edition Gamemaster's Guide will include more than 160 pages of campaign advice, rules for running the game, monsters, setting material for the Dragon Empire, treasure and magic items, and a new introductory adventure.

Just FYI, as I know that there are at least a few 13th Age fans here.

I remember Jon Tweet getting cancelled a bunch of times, wonder if he’s still involved.

Looking forward to this. Supposed to be backwards compatible. Just ordered 2 more of the 1E core books to share with my table as we prepare to start a campaign.

Well, that's an instant buy for me !!!
I'm running 13th Age at present, and it's a great version of D&D
Happy to support the original writers with this next edition!

The Everway Company guys got a little stick for having JoT involved with the Silver Anniversary Edition, but it was a very little stick. A twig even. I don't anticipate any real issue here.

He is, and rob has said 2e wouldnt be without him. He's writing some parts with rob and then he's back to not being involved anymore.
Surely if he had actually been cancelled, he wouldn't be involved at all, rather than... being involved. He's just being worked with less.

*shrug* I assume Pelgrane wanted to make part duex, rob said I need Johnathon, they said no, he said well no part deux, they looked at pocket books, they said ok, well maybe once. I just know what they put out when they announced when they were doing it and the very tiny amount of outrage because most of the 13th age fans could not give less of a shit I think.

It’s also enough to maybe at least buy the 2E core. Glad to hear both are working on the new edition.

Any news about the changes?

I haven't kept up with news since I have all the 1st edition books and don't need another edition, but the main ones I remember being announced were more talents/abilities/spells for everyone, better rules for the icons, backwards compatibility, removal of the term "race," and an improved fighter class. That was from the announcement a year or so ago, so there is probably more info out there if you search for it.

There's a preview document. First half is explaining the game's big ideas to newbies (although it does contain info about how some of those ideas are being modified in 2E), second half focuses on changes established fans will want to know about.

I get that people hate the use of “race” to describe non-human sentients these days, but I’ve never seen anything that feels natural as a replacement.

"Kin" and "Kindred" have worked for me ever since I bought Tunnels & Trolls in 1980 or 1981, and that's what 2E is going to.

I acknowledge that the term 'Race' must have taken on different connoctations in different regions for it to be as emotionally charged as it has become.

I'm familar and comfortable with 'Race', but it is often used incorrectly in trpgs, so I also don't mind a replacement for it

'Species' is actually more correct than 'Race' from a biological perspective, but it lacks flavour for some genres

Names like Kin, Kindred, Kith, Heritage, and Ancestry are likely to become more common analogies for Species if the term 'Race' is getting phased out in trpgs.

They are not really pertaining to the same thing, but they seem to be a reasonable solution.

So I'm sure 13th Age 2E will use something like that, as will many other trpgs going forward.

I agree this will become far more common, as it helps avoid modern conflicts. Despite being mouthfuls, ancestry and heritage are my favorites here. They are most accurate. Ancestry might be the most accurate.

For me “kin” means family, more or less. So not really the same thing.
I totally agree.
None of those names I listed equate to "Species" (neither does 'Race'), but its likely that trpgs will be increasingly using terminology akin to that

Yeah I think once the dust settles, we'll probably see 'Ancestry' as the most likely replacement of 'Race' as a combined Species & Culture analogy

I'm good with it

I also think that the cancel Jonathon Tweet thing was basically due to a misunderstanding so will probably get quietly forgotten anyway.

Well at a cursory glance the only people really talking about are you folks here :hmmm: . There’s no mention of it on the En World thread.

This whole obsession with cancel culture has to be one of the worst things about our modern media.

We were never at war with Eurasia.

I think it's already starting to be that thing that happened in the early 2020s.

As the person who raised it - I'm glad to hear that! I'm a big fan of Tweet as a designer, and he's always struck me as just a bit of a harmless old hippie. He has some weird views, but frankly, who cares.

I don’t really see the need to change the term race or huge fan of the change.

it won’t stop me from buying the game.

I quite like 13th Age, but, boy, Tweet and Heinsoo are prolix. 13th Age Glorantha managed to make the setting even more opaque than RQ:G. Now 2e offers a two-volume slipcase. At least they can get rid of the 1e cover.

He also has a blog entry that talks about it.
Ancestry feels right for fantasy. Species feels right for Sci-Fi.
it gets interesting when we talk about things that are clearly the same species and are affected by their environment differently. Think Belters vs Martians vs Earthers in The Expanse. The notion of ancestry or species doesn't quite fit there, and yet their environment they've adapted for is an important distinction. Race is wildly inaccurate. Kith, for all of them, might be the best, as they are related but different.

Personally, I figure if your orcs, lizardmen etc can’t interbreed with humans, just say “species” already.

If they can interbreed with humans, then go sit in the corner and think about what you’ve done. And maybe use “ancestry” I guess?

In any event, it's going to be Kin in 13th Age 2E.
"Kin" would be my pick, because I feel it scales better both locally ("This is Angela, she is my kin") and globally ("Lizardmen and kobolds are both examples of dragonkin") and the word has a good fantasy mouthfeel to it. I'd be inclined to spell it kyn but there's a reason I'm not paid to write this shit.

Kith and kin both sound pretentious. My vote is for something more likely to be broadly known by people who aren't already fans of specific types of books or certain specific games. The 90s/00s WW PTSD is real, y'all.

I never liked "race" to begin with, so "ancestry" is a kinda-improvement. I just don't like the reasons why it's being changed, but I'm willing to take an improvement no matter where it comes from, for a change:grin:!

However, the odds of me playing or running 13th Age are slim to none and Slim's skipped town already, so I won't be on the KS anyway. As I mentioned it already, I've been thinking lately that if I keep buying d20, how would publishers realize I don't want Yet Another of those::honkhonk:!

With so many new editions being released even if some are compitable with previous editions. Just too much for me at least edition fatigue.

Between STA 2E, 13 th Age 2E, Pathfinder Remaster, one D&D and now Castles and Crusades Reforged.

Only so much I’m willing to read let alone spend money that Im willing to do. I want the kickstarter to succeed I don’t have anyone in my neck of the woods to play the 1E.

I just bought C&C core at the start of the year. I guess I am no longer the market for new editions anymore.
