Hammer wasn't really known for having a sense of humor about his momma...
Okay, only semi related, but what was the joke Chris Rock told about JPS, that made Will go all Ali at the Oscars? Or do they have a history?

Joked about Jada's shaved head, saying he was looking forward to "GI JANE 2". Jada started shaving her head following a recent medical prognosis that she's going to lose most of her hair.

Apparently it's not the first time Rock has made those kind of jokes either and he's been doing routines about their marriage. (It's an open marriage, so unconventional, but it's also the case that the Smiths have been together 15 years so it's obviously working for them).

The outrage over this fascinates me.

Rock got slapped for the kind of comment that would get you punched in any boozer.

I... really don't understand why this is a big deal. Chris Rock did what edgy comedians do, and Will Smith did what husbands do; it is literally in their job descriptions. The only thing extraordinary about this incident was the audience.

Chris Rock did what edgy comedians do,
Making jokes about medical conditions of other people? I'd hope that most comedians are above that.
I'm not saying they shouldn't be allowed to, everything is allowed in jokes.
But I am saying that it's a pretty lame target and not a good look at all.

and Will Smith did what husbands do;
Losing their shit and getting violent over a joke?
That's definitely not what anyone should do or find normal.

In typical Hollywood fashion, everyone involved ended up looking bad in this.

I am, of course, ever grateful for the memes that it will spawn from this point forward.
Cause those are golden :hehe:

Looking at different photos, there's one that shows them both with grins on their faces. You might smack a good friend upside the head, but there's no bad blood there.

That might work if Smith didn’t weep and apologize in his acceptance speech, unless he was going for a second Oscar.

I've been punched. I've been slapped. A slap is nothing. It's a statement of "I could have done violence of a more meaningful nature but I choose not to." It's counting coup. Ain't nobody ever had to go to the hospital for a slap. I mean, he could have followed MC Hammer's example and put a $50,000 hit on Chris Rock...

I'm not in any way a violent person but if someone said something like that about my wife in a place like that I'd be hard pressed not to follow Will Smith's example.

What's notable is that he didn't apologize to Chris Rock. Not sure I would have either, especially without him apologizing for the foul words.

It's not OK to physically assault someone for hurting your feelings. But people lose their tempers. I've certainly been there.

It's also in REALLY poor taste (and that's putting it mildly) to mock someone's health issues. But if I had a dollar for every time I've taken a joke too far, or said something insesnitive or stupid that I wound up regretting later, I'd be too busy counting all that money to even post here (which I'm sure at least a couple of you would prefer).

The whole thing is honestly just kind of sad, IMO. Like, I feel actual sadness and shame for everyone involved. I can't find anyone to root for here. This was not a proud moment for anyone.

When is it socially acceptable to beat up a midget?

When he tells you your wife smells nice.

Are you a comedian? Do you have a list of topics comedians should avoid discussing?
No, although I might start calling myself one as apparently it means you can say absolutely anything without consequences for you.

I just have no sympathy for a guy that went out of his way to offend and then had to deal with the consequences of that.

(Also, we're talking about a slap. It's not like Will Smith kicked the shit out of him. If you think that's serious violence than I can only assume you live in a nunnery).

I don’t think we developed anything. I think there’s innate morality built into human beings. You can argue about how it originated, but it’s there.

Perhaps...from a theological point of view I suppose I'd agree...

Ah well, I can't see it as anything but a win for Chris Rock. For a comedian of his sort, getting someone mad enough to come on stage and smack you is pure gold and proof you haven't lost your edge.

If he was that upset with him, he should have asked a staffer or someone during a commercial break if he could speak with him after the telecast. Not go up and slap him on live TV.

Yeah this is crazy behaviour from Smith because of the public nature of the situation.

If it had happened at a drunken party that would have been something else but on an international broadcast?

And his speech after was delusional and beyond egoistic. He seems unbalanced, probably either mental health or drug issues or a combo of both. Or he's a terrible person.

And look, I used to get into street fights in my early 20s if anyone said anything insulting to me or my gf but I eventually realized that it was pointlessly dangerous and macho nonsense that could lead to either myself or the other guy getting seriously injured or dying. So I grew up. My macho behaviour back then is embarrassing.

Smith could have talked to Rock later and demanded an apology or called him out for the disrespect during his speech or to the press after the awards

Also by hitting him in that situation Smith is cowardly as he knows that there's no way that Rock could respond in kind, Rock was the one who had to be professional and he knew it. Could you imagine how humiliating it would have been for the Black community in the US if Rock had thrown hands in return?

Here is a guy who makes a living hitting people, really hard, who I'm sure as a Cuban had a much tougher background than Smith AND he has alopecia with a far more mature and non-macho stance than the guy whose career is built on 'Parents Just Don't Understand.'

Is it? I mean if I scream some obscenity at someone until they hit me would I suddenly become an edgy comedian?
