Since I haven't been using my Shudder account much the past 2 months, I figured I should start getting my money's worth. I'm watching an anthology film called Nightmare Cinema. Richard Chamberlain and Micky Rourke are in it, which shows how low they've fallen (for Rourke, I guess that means fallen again, since he had a small resurgence after The Wrestler). It's not that the movie is horrible, but it's high grade b-movie schlock

We watched The Bourne Ultimatum.

The Bourne Legacy is up next, probably over the next weekend. Unfortunately Jason Bourne is not on Netflix...
Also, they put up John Wick and recently John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, but John Wick: Chapter 2 is unavailable...

Come on, Netflix!! :irritated:

The HBO Richard Price-led adaptation of Stephen King's recent novel The Outsider is excellent seven episodes in.

I suspect that Price, a master a dialogue, has compensated for that common flaw of weak dialogue by King (or King has improved a lot in that area since I last read his novels of the 80s) and pruned back the plot into something leaner. The score and cast is also great with Ben Mendelsohn very good in the lead role.

Watched The Whistler, a short film on Shudder, and just started watching Satanic Panic, a movie about a pizza delivery woman who makes a delivery to what turns out to be a Satanic Cult, and has to save herself from being their next sacrifice

Seriously, who gets a job in pizza delivery these days? They must mostly watch porn rather than horror.

Found the complete Blake's 7 on Youtube and have been re-watching it off and on. Bit of a mixed bag. Some hasn't aged so well and some came off reasonably well. I'd never actually seen S1E1 or S1E2 before so that was something new for me. Brian Blessed playing the villain in S1E3 was a bit jarring. I was really expecting him to come through with a cheery 'Morning, Doncaster!'

Just watched The Hunt. Boy did the press on that movie have it sooooo wrong.

Um, really entertaining. Highly recommend if you like shlocky horror-action satire. Think I want to own it, know it'll be worth a few rewatches.

Finished Vampires, bit of a surprise ending that I didn't see coming.

Again, not sure what to watch next.

Just finished watching the first season of Upstart Crow. a sorta sitcom of the Life of William Shakespeare (kinda along the lines of Black Adder). Smart, funny, well researched I definitely enjoyed watching it doubly so because I picked it up on a random whim.

Finished Kingdom Season 2. Thought at first that would be all there was, but they jumped 7 years ahead, and the mystery gets deeper. Also close to finishing Black Lightning Season 3.

Got Crave and HBO and number of movie packages back on our cable since we look to be cooped up for a while. Watched Spiderman: Far from Home, Detective Pikachu, X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Now for something completely different I'm rewatching Tarkovsky's arthouse sf classic Stalker. Not my favourite Tarkovsky, I actually rate several of his other films above it but it does have a hypnotic atmosphere and soundtrack and an excellent final scene. This restored print is lovely too.

Started watching the Harley Quinn animated series. I had seen the first episode on Youtube (which they had posted for free), but now I'm diving into the rest of the season. So NSFW, and really funny. Alan Tudyk steals the show as both Clayface and Joker.

Finished off Black Lightning Season 3. Not bad, but given the post-crisis situation. I'm surprised the storyline continued as it did without any of the other heroes showing up to help BL and his "team" (there's a sort of version of The Outsiders going on). I'm hoping next season they might do a team up or two besides the big Arrowverse crossover each year.

That whole "franchise" from the original short story to the computer games are really captivating. The whole concept of the "Zone" and the scifi genie at its core, even though the implementation in the different media varies quite a bit, combined with the Soviet aesthetic.

Just finished Mortel, a French high School/Urban Horror thing. Pretty good characters, interesting and only 6 episodes, so OK if it was crap, which it wasn't.

Not sure what to watch next. Ertugrul Season 5? Grimm? Blakes 7? Probably something else.

The instrumental album inspired by the film by Robert Rich and B. Lustmord is one of my favourite CoC game soundtracks

Watched the 2003 concert film Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band: Live From Barcelona. I was entertained.

Been watching Masters of the Multiverse, a weird, goofy web show starring the wrestlers Allie and Rosemary in a dimension-hopping, demonic possession story. It's not a wrestling show, just a show that stars wrestlers. Allie/Bunny/Cherry Bomb has a lot of charisma and Rosemary/Courtney Rush/Demon is good at what she does, and I've always been a sucker for dimension-hopping stories, so I'm enjoying it a lot.

Roadside Picnic by the Strugatski Bros. is probably my favourite of the 'franchise' with a terrific although different ending from the film. I have a number of their other books but have yet to read them.

I've read "Tale of the Troika" after it was recommended to me, but I felt I was missing something. The Soviet context as such. I've had a similar experience with Lem outside of Solaris.

Just in time for the Coronavirus-shutdown-
binge someone has put up the entire BBC mini-series of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy on YT. Widely thought of as one of the finest pieces made-for-tv up to that point, with great performances by Guiness and an impecable British cast.

I could see that, both Lem and the Strugatskis are really using sf as a satricial vehicle most of time. Perhaps because I've read so much Russian history I get that aspect of Soviet writing without too much effort.

There is a film version of the Strugatski's Hard to be a God (usually considered their major novel) that is supposed to be quite remarkable.

Watched The Letter for the King and almost stopped watching halfway through the first episode, as the lead character was so irritating. Glad I stuck with it, as it turned out to be really, really good, at least in my opinion. All-action, moving and enjoyable. Also, 6 episodes, so I could watch it in one evening.

Then watched Ragnarok, a pretty good Urban Fantasy thing from Norway. Also very enjoyable and another 6 episodes in one evening.

I would recommend them both, along with Mortel.

I haven't seen that one, but I have seen the one where Patrick Stewart plays the villain and turns up at the end - Smiley's People.

The link is blocked in the UK by the Beeb, unfortunately.

Highest recommendation for The Axiom - an indy horror flick on Amazon Prime. It's low budget is elevated by just fantastic cinematography and stellar acting on top of a very original premise.

Stewart plays the same character in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy but only very briefly and doesn't even speak. Smiley's People is a sequel to TTSS.

I watched The Gentlemen today. Good crime flick with a really excellent cast. Had some nice twists and turns to it as well.

We watched The Lost City of Z on Netflix.

I'm a big fan of the director James Gray, even his lesser films are worth a watch. Haven't seen this one yet.

It feels kind of long and slow, but not boring. I enjoyed it, even though we should apparently take some of it with a grain of salt.

I find it funny you saw it on Netflix where you are, given it was produced by Amazon..

Long and slow is kinda his style, I like it actually.

Did a Will Smith double feature of Bad Boys for Life (which I found to be ok, but not as good as the previous films) and Gemini Man, which had a good premise marred by bad sfx for the clones younger looking faces. Good action though. BBfL sets up a potential sequel, which given how well it was doing in theaters before things went downhill means it could be made one day.

Also dipping back into Gotham a bit, as well as starting Season 3 of Glow
