Unfortunately I tend to regard the whole first season of set-up thing as an indication that noone has a clue where they are going and that they almost certainly would never get there anyway.

When Season 1 is setup, Season 2 is usually a whole lot meandering around and a general sense of "Oh fuck we were so busy thinking about how to set something up that we didn't realise we had no idea what to do once we'd done that. Quick let's finish the season on a cliffhanger/twist that will retroactively make this entire season into set-up as well."
Shogun - just watched episode 9 and just loving it. The advantage of a mini series - just has to be great on it's own terms.

Shogun- in my top 3 books (or series) of all time.

Also just started the 2014 BBC version of the Musketeers.
IIRC, that version of the Musketeers is quite watchable, though it takes a lot of liberties with the books. It's interesting to see Peter Capaldi as Richelieu and Hugo Speer makes a good Treville.

So I got two episodes into Halo, and plan on watching more tonight. I also caught the new episodes of NCIS/NCIS Hawaii, two more episodes of Law & Order Toronto and caught up on the current season of Dark Side of the Ring

I really enjoyed the first episode of Fallout but after watching episode 3 I find myself feeling the jadedness I often feel with TV series. Is this going anywhere and will we reach anywhere before there's a sudden season end without even a glimmer of a completed story?

The ending for Fallout is pretty complete unto itself with enough of a clear setup for another season that isn't frustrating. So in this case I'd say you don't have to worry on that front.

But I definitely feel you, I find myself watching a lot less tv these days as so many series spin their wheels and lead nowhere.

Wasting 8 hours plus of viewing time that could be better spent on the numerous great films I haven't got around to just doesn't seem worthwhile anymore.

Not done with Halo season 2 yet. Minor spoilers ahead.

My favorite part of Halo season 2 so far is when John touches the artifact and triggers a BrandPower ad.

My least favorite part is being completely clueless about what's happening in the season opener until halfway through the season because the writers think they're being clever with sequencing cuts. It's not clever. It's just pointless.

Tubi has one of my all time favorite comfort films on so I’m settling down for wonderful night of Raw Force

(I have this on bluray, maybe multiple copies now that I think about it. Does anyone else find they end up watching the movies they have on physical media on streaming services anyway?)

An insane movie, love it.

Streaming, no; broadcast, yes. One of the many channels that shows Westerns was running "Jeremiah Johnson" a while back and I would often tune in for a scene or two.

Tits in a theatrical trailer. It ain’t a movie without a boobie.

There are a number of Gialli trailers on YouTube with full frontal nudity. That said Raw Force is an unabashed exploitation film so it does have some nudity.

Edit I just put the NSFW trailer behind spoiler tags, I had forgotten about the nudity in the trailer, but that doesn’t help where it has been quoted in later posts.

New to me! Guess I know what I'm watching this evening.

I think the last movie I watched was Female Yakuza Tale, from 1973 on Midnight Pulp, which was... an experience.
I took that dubious recommendation and was not disappointed. If I had to compare it to anything, it'd be a Bizarro (as in completely inverted world) Sean Connery era bond flick.

If anyone hasn't seen the gem that is Radioactive Dreams, it's required viewing, IMO.
There's no better post-apocalyptic, noir detective, action-comedy gonzo musical out there. Bonus: Michael Dudikoff!
Right up there with Better Off Dead, w/r/t being one of my most-fondly-remembered films of my younger years. I remember searching forever for a crappy rip which I saved off years ago.

Now there's a much nicer copy on both YT and Vimeo:

Just started Raw Force.

Off to a good start with wannabe Hitler as a pilot and creepy Asian Ewok islander monks.

Also, you trade for women based on their weight. Good to know.

If only that one chick had accepted the Full Monty clause, she might still be alive.

Ah, well... Settling in, since that was barely 6 minutes. Still have 80 minutes left!

Did you finish the movie? More thoughts on it? Inquiring minds want to know!

Well, it could certainly sustain an MST3K treatment.

Overall, it was entertaining, but I felt there was a bit of low energy with the boat party.

The fight in the strip bar was hilarious. As if they had to periodically remind viewers they were in a strip bar--or perhaps they kept cutting back and forth to keep people from getting bored of either the one dancer or the fight scenes.

The GM got tired of the PC's incompetence toward the end and had the villain literally walk the heroes out of lair with the treasure before committing suicide.

The sound department absolutely won movie budget poker night. Not only did they get to fit sounds to every action, but the sheer variety of BGM they shoehorned into every scene was impressive.

Fight choreography got home with barely more than bus money. Crutch to the crotch was their most inspired moment. I don't think they could even afford blanks for their firearms. They definitely couldn't afford a torch that burned rope.

So yeah, I had fun. But there's better (worse) out there.

After watching this week's episodes of the 3 FBI series, I jumped back into Halo S2. Episode 4 was my favorite. Not sure how I feel about how the season ended. Since I don't know much of the setting lore past the fall of Reach, I have a question:

"Is this ancient parasite thing going to be the big bad moving forward, or is the Covenant going to remain a threat after that last battle?"

Thanks, I was thinking the same thing. While I played some of the games, I have no idea where that came from...

whep...Rebel MOon part 2. So, that was a Zak Schieder movie I guess. Really there was some good stuff and some bad stuff. The evil commander needed to be choked out by Darth Vadar before he could lead his men into this catastophe. Seriously though, what is it with coal furnace boiler rooms in space ships? I mean the whole thing is a pastiche of other franchises cool bits but the Mutant Chronicles movie isn't one of the things I was expecting to get referenced. Also, it's possible I was wrong about the village girl being the lost princess but they put that ball back in the air at the end of the movie. That or the next movie is the Black Company rip off. I'm so confused.

I was inspired by EmperorNorton EmperorNorton ’s post in “What have you been reading?” to mention this. They mention Murderbot Dairies which is unrelated but in an alternate universe could have been written by the titular character from the film I rewatched yesterday, Eve of Destruction. Eve 8 is an android programmed with her creator’s memories and Gregory Hines is the antiterrorism expert who has to track her down.

I know I’ve seen it before and while it isn’t great Hines does a decent job, as he always does in these odd castings like the wonderful Off Limits. The action here is ok and you can’t but wonder if this didn’t partially inspire Species a few years later.

If you need another book tie in to close the post check out Synbat by Bob Mayer where a team of Green Berets track down a killer government genetic experiment. Mayer was a Green Beret and does a great job with the details from what I remember, I read it stationed at Ft Bragg in the 90s.

Kind of in the same vein I am rewatching Man’s Best Friend (1993), talk about a movie that deserves a remake. It is great up to the point it soft pedals the violence and gore. It is rated R for cripes sake! This film is still fun but the concept has so much more potential.

On second thought a remake would probably use CGI instead of animal actors which is never as good

Edit I love animals and don’t want unethical filming practices I just think it’s possible to get great footage without using CGI

We have been watching the the Sean Connery James bond movies the past few weeks and just finished Goldfinger. This one was the most successful with my wife who hasn't seem them (it has Pussy Galore and she couldn't stop laughing at that). Also Goldfinger is much grander overall than the previous two. I haven't seen them since I was a kid but I think I actually liked from Russia with Love the most of the three so far (if you had asked me which one I preferred a month ago, I would have said Doctor No because that is the first one I remember seeing and my uncle made a big production about it when he showed it to me: "This is the first James Bond movie!")

Also finally got a copy of near dark which I have not seen since high school. Been trying to find one for ages. It really holds up in my opinion. Unfortunately I got a bad copy and it started skipping at the 39 minute mark so I had to ask the seller to send me a second copy (which I am still waiting for). This movie is what all of our Vampire campaigns devolved into in the 90s

From Russia with Love is my favorite Bond movie. Near Dark is great right up to the end. The cast is amazing! That said I can't stand the ending of the movie. I don't dislike it enough to stop me from rewatching it though. :hehe:
A blood transfusion, really? It is that easy. That bugs the heck out of me. I think a less happy ending would have been more appropriate. I also think Jesse and Diamondback just gave up which didn't sit well with me.

Yeah I also revisited the early Bond films with my wife and From Russia with Love really stands up, probably my fav of the Connery Bonds now.

And for many of us Sean Connery is James Bond
I tend to agree. As I am going back, I do think he is the character, and he brings a balance to it that I find the other actors all kind of miss for me. He captures the mixture of being dangerous and charming really well, and he can hit those comedic beats, but it doesn't feel overly corny in his hands. He is suave but still looks physically tough (some bonds don't pull this off as well, and Daniel Craig looks little too much like a UFC fighter for me, so he is tough but the balance is off). Next to him my favorite bond is Timothy Dalton (who I really wish got more movies).

I agree, people weren’t ready for the grittier thing they tried to do with Dalton but it finally paid off with Craig.

Growing up Connery was my preference but Her Majesties Secret Service was always the most memorable film and remains my number one Bond.

Course Fleming later changed the books so that the written Bond was Scottish whereas he's clearly English in the early books. He was either really taken with Connery or just commercial minded enough to see the advantage of doing so for his book sales, which is a bit silly of decision imo.

Class-wise I don't think Connery or Craig are a match to the upper class character as per the book. Brosnan was an excellent choice but only got one good film to show his stuff imo.

Dalton brought more psychological depth amd grit to the series which I liked and felt closer to the (good) books.

The class thing probably goes way over my head being an American lol. For me though, Connery still gets that sweet spot between charming lothario and killer that worked. The only book I have read is Casino Royale so I can' t speak to the fidelity of the books (I will say he struck me as English in that novel). My uncle, the one who initially showed me the early James Bonds, shares your opinion on Her Majesties Secret Service. I only have vague memories of that one so I am looking forward to seeing it once we get through the Connery bonds (not sure I have the fortitude for going through all the films after that so we might be selective in what later bond movies we watch)

This is probably heresy as I think a lot of people like Pierce Brosnan, but he is when I checked out from Bond (I didnt' come back to watching them until Craig stepped in the role after seeing the first couple of Brosnan movies). He seems like a very nice guy in real life so it isn't anything against him personally, he just didn't feel as dangerous to me

Dalton was the first Bond I saw in the theatre, and I just like Dalton in general as an actor. But the dangerousness of the character really seemed to come to the surface (I think prior to watching that my knowledge of James Bond was built mostly on seeing Roger Moore, so it was a noticeable contrast)

With Brosnan it is the more the films rather than him imo. They wasted him on mediocre movies.

If you haven't seen it I recommend checking out the gem of a thriller comedy The Matador with Brosnan and Kinnear to see how charming yet scary Brosnan can be with a good script and director.

The Matador can currently be viewed for free on TubiTV.

I always thought Pierce Brosnan would be the *perfect* Bond. Has the look, the English gentleman thing down, but they gave him shit scripts, and didn't take advantage of what he could do, IMHO...

I thought that Pierce Brosnan was a bit too good-looking for the part, but only a bit, and perfect in every other way. I liked the way he moved through a set as Bond — like an athlete rather than a model. Timothy Dalton was the right degree of "rather good-looking, in a way", "cruel-looking", and "a bit like Hoagy Carmichael". But you could almost see him wince with every line he delivered.

Brosnan had rather bad luck with the whole thing. He was cast to replace Moore when Remington Steele was cancelled, in 1986. And that generated enough publicity that NBC un-cancelled Remington Steele and held Brosnan to his contract. So Albert Broccoli cast Timothy Dalton instead. Which was a loss of at least two outings for Brosnan as Bond while he was still in his thirties.

And then when he did come in it was in an era of silly plots and crappy dialogue.

I just logged into this thread to ask if anyone watched it. Have not spent the time with the first one but Netflix keeps wagging it in front of me (unfortunate connotation mostly intentional).

The first movie I can ever remember seeing was Live and Let Die, which I saw at a drive-in with my parents when I was 4 or 5 years old. Was a double feature with The Mechanic, starring Charles Bronson.

Roger Moore was the Bond I grew up with. I didn't even know there was another Bond until years later when I gleefully sat down in front of the TV to catch a James Bond movie on broadcast network television (The CBS Sunday Night Movie or something along those lines) and it was some totally different guy playing Bond. I remember thinking "Who is THIS guy?!?"

Growing up, I'd always heard how Moore was an inferior Bond, and that Connery was the superior iteration of the character. And I didn't get it. Moore was Bond as far as I was concerned, because I'd imprinted on him like a baby duck. He defined the character for me. He was suave and debonair. He was the kind of guy who could take a sip of wine and tell you which side of the mountain the grapes had grown on. And he had killer one-liners. And there was always that final scene where he blows off his superior officers to bang the latest Bond Girl.

Over the past year, I have been rewatching the whole Bond series with my son. The last one we watched was For Your Eyes Only, and now that I am older and wiser, I understand why people dislike Moore. Connery had an edge that Moore didn't have. Moore never felt like a killer on a leash. Connery felt exactly that way.

Moore also got saddled with some mediocre movies. The Spy Who Loved Me is great and For Your Eyes Only is great and the rest are middling-to-bad. Live and Let Die is not good, The Man With The Golden Gun was only marginally better, Moonraker was damned silly, Octopussy was forgettable, and A View to a Kill was terrible. Maybe public opinion of him as Bond would be better if they'd given him better movies.
