I'm a big fan of the director James Gray, even his lesser films are worth a watch. Haven't seen this one yet.

Loved the book, never saw the movie, promised my players a CoC adventure dealing with Fawcett’s disappearance.

Watching Thieves of the Wood, a Belgian series based in 18th Century Flanders. It's interesting so far, but they are trying far too hard for the tits and violence brigade. I thought it was Dutch, but it is actually Flemish, the Dutch in Belgium.

It would be great as a setting for Renaissance.

Just watched some Columbo on telly. Great last line, "I dug this bullet out of the wall 3 hours before you said it had been shot at you 3 minutes ago"

We watched The Bourne Legacy on Netflix. Quite enjoyable.

The majority of Dutch cinema sucks balls, so if you watched something you enjoyed it's most likely not Dutch.

There are exceptions to this rule, most notably IMHO Undercover Kitty, based on the children's novel Minoes by legendary writer Annie M.G. Schmidt, and starring Carice van Houten of Game of Thrones fame, which is also on Netflix. Do check it out.

So i've binged the MCU: Captain Marvel, Ragnarok, and the Infinity War/Endgame epics. Oh and Ant Man and the Wasp.

Also watched the Boys (which is excellent) and season 2 of the Expanse (not as good as the books at all, but well made).

Captain Marvel: meh. The comic and the character are great. The story is ok but underwhelming given how powerful she's meant to be. Save a few Skrulls. Ok, it's cool to make them not the villains. Unfortunately the main problem is that it's painfully obvious Brie Larson doesn't care about the role. She looks bored and uncomfortable throughout which is a real shame. No charisma at all.

Antman and the Wasp: nowhere even close to being as good as the first one. The story is boring. I still don't like his three zany friends. they are the worst actors. The first film is superb. This is just dull.

Ragnarok: suffers from the problem all these movies do. It's overlong. The big battles are epic and climactic, but tiring. Other than that is's a lot of fun with a very sharp script. Lots of jokes and fun.

Infinity War: again, far too long. Although given that I knew what happened at the end the movie didn't have that sense of surprise when Thanos wins. Thanos is done very well and the effects are impressive, but again it's just so overwhelming!

Endgame: it's three hours long! To be fair it does a good job of tying everything together and Steve Rogers' ending is quite sweet. I couldn't give two shits about Iron Man he is thoroughly unlikeable. Smart Hulk was a nice twist even if Mark Ruffalo's voicin was weak (or the treatment used sounded goofy). Fat Thor is hilarious. The big battle is again well done and ultra epic. But for me it's just tiring. I'm getting a bit too old for stuff like this. I'm sure the kids, if they have the energy, love it.

I like the individual movies. Always fun to see an origin story for these characters, but I think moving forward grandiose epics are a bit too much for me. It is impressive how they've managed to tie it all together. It's also amusing to see which actors are really feeling it and which are clearly, at this point at least, only in it for the payola. Chris Evans performance is quite understated. Robwert Downey junior is just irritating as fuck. Paul Rudd is a great counter balance as is Tom Holland (sadly Amazon Prime doesn't have the Spider man movies). Benedict Cucumberpatch's accent is awful. Vision got shafted. I don't care about Black Widow. Would like to see Thor in the next Guardians movie (assuming there is one). THey are by far and away the best thing about the MCU and Marvel would be fools to throw that away. Don't bother with Captain Marvel 2, Brie Larson is the wrong actress entirely.

Oh, and rewatching the Fifth doctor

Been catching up on a shitload of anime lately. I've cranked out My Hero Academia (twice now actually, might actually go for three), Nichijou, That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime, working on Mob Psycho 100... Kinda struggling through Magi: Labyrinth of Magic, but honestly that show's kinda shit...

I'm up to the current season of Masters of the Multiverse. Since episodes are between 5 & 20 minutes long, I'll very likely finish it today.

Last night I watched the movie The Platform on Netflix. It was okay. Probably not one I would have chosen myself, but I was on a Google Hangout with a buddy who wanted to watch it.

I don't recogise any of what I'm seeing from Season 2 of The Expanse from my recollection of Caliban's War. It seems utterly different.

It does get hacked around quite substantially from the books. For example, Anderson Dawes is quite a different character from the books and Bobbie Draper and her associated characters change a bit as well. One thing I find quite jarring about the series is Frankie Adams trying to do gung-ho American marine mannerisms with a South Auckland accent. They really, really needed to adapt the dialogue a bit.

I still thought the TV series was quite good, though, although I watched it before I read the books so I didn't get the Oh-it's-not-the-same-as-the-books disappointment that some folks got. The casting was a bit ho-hum though. There are a couple of good choices - Amos and Crisjen Avrasala come to mind, and maybe Miller - but most of the casting didn't do a lot for me.

About halfway through Glow, and also catching up on NuMacGuyver Season 1 on CBS All Access. They're on Season 4 now, so I've got a lot to catch up on.

It's well made but the cast are completely at odds with the characterisation in the books.

I also find that the Belters just come across as thoroughly unsympathetic. Season 5 won't do them any favours either!

Amazon Prime is surprisingly...rental prices.

Disney+ isn't bad but ffs why are they drip feeding Clone Wars and the Mandalorian? Why didn't they launch of Rise of the Skywalker (over here) as well? Dropped a bollock there. Since I'm a corona captive, I might as ewll watch the bloody thing!

Saw episode 1 of Swamp Thing. It looked kinda promising, but knowing the show's dead doesn't really inspire me to continue.

Dr Who Black Orchid tonight.

So my bundle of new Movie channels includes some TV series like Condor, a ten part adaptation of the classic film Three Days of the Condor, which was an adaptation of the book Six Days of the Condor. I'm a sucker for spy thrillers and this modern retelling is quite good so far with the inciting massacre well handled.

I've been binging Attack on Titan

It's one that I've known was good, was recommended to me often the last few years, and I was sure I would like just based on what I heard, but I'd been putting off just because of the time investment. But doing school from home means I constantly have something on in the background while doing homework, so making my way through some series I've neglected.

Also saw Doctor Sleep, which was....watchable. Ewan McGreggor is always great, and the story had potential. Buyt how do you follow Kubrick? It felt like one of those straight to video sequels from the 90s in comparison to the original. Plus the bad guys were just not scary. I think a film just about an adult Danny Torrence dealing with alcoholism and the ghosts of his past would have been way more entertaining. It felt like they took that and tacked on an X-Men plot for no reason.

Rewatched Blade of the Immortal. One of the most impressive action films of all time. If not for the subtitles I'd probably rewatch it more often, but I rarely have the spare time to invest total attention to the screen.

The Endless was a decent Lovecraftian film, with a nice tough of humour and humanism. Rewatched Midnight Meat Train - after the original Hellraiser, easily the best Clive Barker adaption for the screen. Unfortunately, the CGI is already showing it's age (this is why practical effects will always be king). Regardless, still thoroughly entertaining with a fantastic "monster" (who just happens to look exactly like my grandfather). Watched the original Oldboy - think I prefer the remake, but both are great.

Just finished watching Wu Assassin. It wasn't very good, I found it dull and it just didn't grab me.The martial arts sequences were good, but very long and boring after a bit. The mysticism just didn't do it for me, either.

It was only 10 episodes, but after 5 I was wishing it was only 6. Then, at the end, when I thought it was all over, they seemed to imply that there would be a Series 2. Let's hope not.

watched Attack of the Clones.

Honestly the Emperor's plan is fairly assinine. But that aside the whole Kamino/clone army plot is so mishandled. I've watched the Clones Wars episode were they try and explain away who Syfo Dyas is and what he was doing, but I don't remember it being interesting. All that remains is this bizarre little planet whose people can manufacture an entire army for the entire Republic with no one noticing.

Also while Syfo Dyas organised the whole thing, it was Dooku that brought in Jango Fett to be used as the clone template. Surely then you'd think he'd use a crap template and weaken the army.

It's a mess.

However on the other than the film becomes a lot more interesting (if you ignore the horrific romance subplot and dialogue) if you take Dooku at face value. That what he says to a captive Obi Wan is mean honestly. He comes right out and explains to Obi Wan what has happened. If you assume he's actually trying to counter Sidious and build an army to fight him knowing that he's on the road to Sithdom the film is improved.

Of course that's not what happens. Dooku is just a villain with no depth at all which is a shame given the actor and the concept of the character. They do nothing with him, and then kill him off right away in the next film

We just finished S3 of Castlevania. I must say I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Watched Yakuza Apocalypse.

It was...really weird.

Worth it at least for the frog vs vampire fight scene

"You were my brother Anakin, I loved you....so I'm just going to leave you in pain to catch fire and burn up having sliced off your legs. Bye!"

Yeah, if he actually cared he'd have at least finished that job.

Just started Mandalorian.

I know this has probably been hashed out in the Mandalorian thread, but I just watched the episode with the AT-ST. When they were going on and on about how just one could wipe out 2 companies of soldiers, I couldn't help but think "What about ewoks, though?"

I think it just means that AT-STs are at a disadvantage in dense forests

I wanted to like the Mandalorian. I wanted a show about a space bounty hunter wandering the galaxy getting into and out of trouble, instead we get yet ANOTHER story about another force user in a universe, that claims that they are rare.

And then there's all the messaging in the show, not to mention that they had to bash the Skywalkers AGAIN by making them into inconsiderate people (along with the rest of Tattooine) that kill Tusken Raiders for THOUSANDS OF YEARS when all they needed to do was learn their secret language. Which is a massive retcon, as they're violent, xenophobic savages that wouldn't want to teach anyone outside of their tribe. But got to take yet another potshot and the old characters.

As opposed to letting the guy die a horrific death? All the yes!

It's not like he hadn't already committed to killing him
If they had shown WHY he couldn't. Like say, Obi couldn't approach Anakin due to the heat of the lava, that would have fixed the issue for me.

I hope we get to see some different environments in season 2.

Not say that mud planet, world of mud, brown town, muddy world, or the planet of dirt weren't diverse of course

That would require them to go to physical locations, instead of using their digital tech. Personally, I would have preferred if they hadn't gone to Tattooine again. There are other sandy planets in the galaxy, after all.

They also could have bothered to include how on earth Qui Gonn came back from the dead and taught yoda how to live forever because that has to be THE most ironic thing ever. Anakin's entire driving force for turning is to save padme by overcoming death. Turns out Qui Gonn had known it for years after his own death. Oops!

It's in the novel; there's a scene where Qui Gonn talks to Yoda (and a different take is in the Clone Wars)

The majority of Dutch cinema sucks balls, so if you watched something you enjoyed it's most likely not Dutch.

I have just watched Ares, a Dutch programme about a Student Secret Society. It started off oddly with a real shocking scene, then meandered through a few episodes and came to an unsatisfying conclusion. I quite liked it, as I really had no idea where it was going.

Currently watching Titans Season 2. The first episode spends half of the time wrapping up the cliffhanger from the previous season and putting a little bow in it, before moving to a completely different storyline.

Continuing with Devs the latest episode (number 5) instantly won me over by prominently featuring the deepcut 'Oh I Wept' by Free, probably my favourite 'hard rock' band of the 70s. Unlike most bands of the era they excelled at these mid-tempo bluesy ballads with a real minimalist rather than maximalist touch. This episode also had the balls to have a 3-5 minute scene where characters discuss theoretical physics, assuming the audience wouldn't be lost or confused. Course I expect the dorks over at AV Club to complain that this dreamy, surreal episode was 'slow' as usual.

I love Free. Paul Kossoff was a huge influence on .my guitar playing. And Oh I Wept is possibly the best classic rock ballad ever recorded.

So I just discovered an etirely new genre of videos on Youtube that kinda fascinate me. Apparenty cows love music. They will gather around, seemingly transfixed by it. So there's a ton of videos of people going out into pastures and plasying instruments and the cows gathering around to listen.
