Today I received a nice, shiny new copy of Land of the Rising Sun for Chivalry & Sorcery 5e!

I've read a bit of it and I'm liking it a lot so far. I don't own C&S, and likely won't get it (too crunchy!), but this will sit nicely next to Sengoku as a great sourcebook for gaming in ancient Japan.

Yea, I've been surfing through it (I Kickstarted it) as I play with Cold Iron Samurai Adventures. Lots of good stuff. I just wish, like various other projects, they had been able to re-release the original.

I ordered a copy of the old Rules Cyclopedia from DriveThru about a month ago and it finally got here. I have the PDF, but it's nice to have the physical copy in my hands, even if it's not an original.

I am completely unfamiliar with that. What is it?
It's a time travel RPG, one of those games that is original and inspirational, but that not many people have gotten to the table. It's the classic time cop setup, with you trying to stop people from messing with history. I remember that creating paradoxes gave you points in Frag. If you got enough Frag, you got erased.

I did the same thing about two years ago on a lark. The PoD wasn't bad at all.

Well... I hope they're good.

I just got Alien RPG and Twilight 2000 by Free League delivered.
Overall I really enjoy T2000, it's done really well. At first I had some worries but they won me over. They need to release more material for it of course, specially life paths and background for other countries. Germany should have had more information from the start in my opinion.

Alien, I love the look and feel but the books are hard to read with that Alien feel. The PDF's are easier on the eyes to read. I've become a bit of a fanboy of Free Leagues Publishing and have backed a most of their Kickstarters. Good company with solid people who are passionate about their products and the hobby.

The system looks interesting, and looks like it can create "plausible" results while not grinding to a halt while rolling the dice. I have to play around a little bit with it and see how I think it holds up. I'm also curious how it would work for other settings with combat that "feels realistic."

I'm sure there soon will be a lot of homebrewed alternatives, even if it takes a while for FL to produce stuff. If I would get a gaming group together for this, I'd probably make a homebrewed timeline for a 2000 scenario (going with some divergences during the 80s as well, instead of just "the coup succeeded").

The "there's two Swedish" brigades... So... That should be read as "There's two brigades in central Sweden in the year 2000" right? Without the Soviet union collapsing, the military services would most likely not be dismantled. Besides the brigades that existed up to fall of the Soviets...
There were also 6 urban warfare specialist battalions planned. Three for Stockholm, and three for the rest of the country. Only the one for southern Stockholm and the one for central Stockholm got troops trained for them IRL to my knowledge (my time in the army, back in the early 90s, was with the one designated for Central Stockholm).

As I ordered the stuff from a gaming store, I didn't got the PDFs. However, I sent FL an email, and asked if there was a chance to get them if providing proof of purchase.

I never saw the original version but I was aware of it, and Bushido too, in the mid-80s when I first discovered RPGs. So the original isn't something I have strong feelings about, although I'd be curious enough to take a look. Later on, post-2000, I did read good things being said about it and then this new edition got some pretty great reviews when it came out. However, I wasn't interested in the C&S system. So I was in two minds about getting it. In the end, while it isn't the cheapest book, I feel it was a great investment. There's a ton of material to mine and I think it looks fairly easy to convert stuff over to other systems.

Yea, it's also great to mine for prices. One thing I've noticed is that there seems to be a significant compatibility across systems in prices though interestingly the exchange rates between copper, silver, and gold can be very different. I suppose part of it is everyone who does research finds the same historical price lists or something...

My copies of Mutants in the Now and Solar Blades & Cosmic Spells both arrived this week. Man SB&CS is a beast of a digest sized book. It’s like the mullet of RPGs; digest from the front, encyclopedia from the side.

I love the book.

Renegade Legion packages came in today. Damn impressive that they were indeed truly brand new. Now to track down RL Centurion and a few sundry other items. I did the two boxes of each deal from the seller. Plus the 4 books and two boxes of cohorts deal. He threw in a free book and 2 more platoons for the cohorts free of charge as well. Classy guy.

Awesome! I was more than happy with what he worked for me as well.

Two unpunched copies...

Never played it but loved the box/ad. What's it like?
It's a hex and chit game set on a planet called Imirrhos, ruled by several houses. Each house is a faction, and there are two others: the ruling Terran Empire, and the natives. Oh, amd the Silakkans, potential alien invaders.

Each counter has a combat strength (usually but not always used for attack AND defense) and a movement value.

Combat is attack strength plus die roll vs. same.

The map has different types of terrain, and different resources/strongholds which have victory point values.

There are a few different scenarios, either building the most powerful House, rebelling against the Terran Empire, or repelling a Silakkan invasion. Each one has different victory contortions.

In addition, there are Artifacts with different effects, Each house/faction has a leader with a special ability, and Heroes, also with special abilities can be recruited.

The thene of the game leans heavily to sci-fantasy.

Hope that makes sense. I'm high on painkillers.

Edit: a pretty straightforward little wargame with added randomness in the form of Arrifacts and Leader special abilities. Usually considered one of the best of TSR's minigames.

I have received these recently.

Call of Cthulhu 5th edition is one of my preferred editions, together with Classic Cthulhu (2e) stuff I am still waiting from the Kickstarter. Other than that I have the 3rd ed. hardback from Games Workshop (UK). Bought this edition from a friend.

Swords and Wizardry l’ve just received by mail from Amazon. Now that I’ve found the Gábor Lux stuff, my appreciation for D&D old school play has rekindled. I am seriously considering running Castle Xyntillan as a semi-mega dungeon on-line with OD&D/S&W. I bought this edition because of the Erol Otus cover.

Picked up the silver foil edition of Grimtooth's Ultimate Traps Collection. Mostly for nostalgia, as I'm not a fan of arbitrary insta-kills. Though I have used some of the less lethal traps. Still. It's great fun to read.

Call it FOMO (fear of missing out) or being a sucker for anything with a SALE! sticker on it, but I thought I'd take a punt on the Modiphius sale. I'd previously bought the John Carter of Mars core rulebook (on sale!) and liked the look of it after a flick through so figured 'in for a penny...' and took a look at what else was going.

From all the gushing outpouring of love for 2D20 on this forum* I figured I'd make up my own mind about the Conan game as well. My first experience with a Conan RPG was the horrifically laid out/edited (if it even was) TSR game back in the day which we played for a while but thought was crap, overall. I also have the Mongoose version which I never played but presume it was another in the glut of D20 OGL things that make my shelves groan. Never played, bought on the cheap, probably never get round to it as D&D is a thing I played in the 80s and I've mostly moved on.

The art looks decent for all the Modiphius stuff. Customer service is so-so. No word that things were waiting for restock until I chased up two weeks later. Within two days of the email the box turned up. Haven't really looked at the stuff for the last couple of days (it sat unopened as I've been up to my eyeballs with work) until today and I thought I'd better check what they've sent.

The Core rules slipcase is a nice thing indeed. Core Rulebook (288 page) and Campaign Book (128 page) in a sturdy slipcase. To put into perspective about my FOMO and being a sucker for a bargain check out the restored normal RRPs...

full-prices.png

The rulebooks come with complimentary PDFs and are delivered in minutes of ordering.

The slipcase set cost me £15 on sale (£75). Narrators Toolkit £5 (£24.99) Conan core book £17.50 (£34.99)

Dice sets cost £2.40 each (£11.99 each) Eeek! £12 for fancy dice. If I'd paid that and then seen the sale price it would leave a salty taste in the mouth.

John Carter Core Rulebook £8.40 (£41.99) Conan Pirate and Mercenary £12.50 each (£24.99 each). I wondered about filling out the rest of the lines but a quick look over the Conan stuff has my wallet reeling in fear and even John Carter has a few other books and bits/bobs that has my head shaking and my heart doesn't have the pull to overrule it. I'll keep an eye out for future sales but the Conan stuff was a half hearted 'give it a punt' because of what I've read about the system. For me BOL does Sword and Sorcery adequately and I'm more of a high magic type of GM/player these days. The Pirate and Merc books were bought because they apparently have useful extra rules on mass combat and ships.

Bits and bobs. Tile set £3 (£15) Notebook (no idea why I bought this) £2.40 (£11.99!) Players Guide £4 (£19.99) Landscape Deck £3 (£14.99) and Character/Token deck £3 (£14.99)

Other stuff was on sale but I'm a noob to 2D20. I'll look into it as much as I can to get a balanced view of the game before I crack the books open and have the PDFs for pretty much everything you see (except dice) so overall you can't beat the sales for sheer value especially on the JC stuff. I would not have bought any of this at full price and even the full price stuff I have bought recently (like the Talisman adventure game) I bought at a discounted price (£26 instead of £45 depending on where you buy). In other words I like a bargain.

Will I play it? Dunno. Too many games/not enough time syndrome as usual. I'll look at the PDFs and see whether the stuff is worth keeping sealed in case I ever purge a few shelves. Speaking of which I think I need another Billy (from Ikea). My new years resolution of not buying more stuff I will never play or read (remains to be seen) isn't going well. Current year spending so far over £200.

*Oh wait. That's Mythras. In that case change that to 'from all the hard stares, bitter experiences and shaking of head with angry under the breath mutterings' for 2D20

Anyone who's seen the actual Against the Darkmaster core rulebook will know what a behemoth it is, weighing in at close to 600 pages. For me, it's simply not something I can use easily and quickly at the gaming table. I've therefore, FINALLY, gotten around to splitting it out and getting it printed into 5 books, using the internal illustrations of each book and maintaining the page numbers and index in each so things can still be found - even if it sometimes means switchig books; but that should really be kept to a minimum as these individual books are logically separated.

Anyways, I think I may actually play this now!

I’ve been intrigued by Against the Darkmaster, but not having a group has kept me from pulling the trigger in recent times, and when I did have a group I know having to do math would have caused one player to sink the gane if I’d tried to run it.

That's a shame; adding two 2-digit numbers is easily solved with a calculator for most people but I guess there are always those that it doesn't.

From what I've read of it so far, I'm really enjoying it, and its definitely giving me a few ideas for a campaign... the section around building the Darkmaster for your campaign is pretty good and the bestiary has a lot of options in it that can be tailored down to give some specific flavour to each world. Artwork is lovely throughout as well, even if some pieces are derivative/homages (depending on your point-of-view).

I wish I was joking when I say they complained that totaling the Attribute + Ability to get a dice pool in V:TM was too much at times.

I understand they now work in an accounting role, which just makes me “WTF?” over my gaming math memories of them even harder.

But... But... There isn't even a need to add. Pick up the amount of dice for the attribute. Pick up the amount of dice for the ability. Pick up some more dice if there is a bonus. Remove any dice for any penalty. The amount in the hand is the correct amount, and there is no need to know how many it is.

Hold up there! I once gamed with a guy that struggled to add a D20+BAB for a low level dnd PC. It was almost comical at times. Watching him stare at his sheet. Then he would hold the dice up and move it around above his sheet like it was the planchette on a Ouija board. Then (when the spirits had presumable done the math) he would call out a random number that bore no relation to what he had rolled or what his BAB was. His friend would just look over and do the math for him. When he went to the bathroom we all asked if there was something wrong with him - like was he dyslexic or something? His friend shook his head and said, "nah, he's just really shit at adding up". Apart from that he was a pretty good player.

Later we found out he was working as a mortgage advisor for bank. We were all surprised when we found out and his friend just went, "yeah I know!"

... These stories are starting to remind me of t'Pub equivalent of that scene in Jaws where Quint and Hooper are trading scar stories!

You have good taste! I am a big fan of Gábor Lux and collected most of his work including a lovely hardcopy of Castle Xyntillan. Sadly, I have not had the opportunity to actually run any of it.

L Lundgren You shouldn't have any problems getting the pdfs from them.
I forgot to write about this.

Free League (and the store I ordered from) is connected to Bits and Mortar. So they was just waiting for the legal ability for me to change my mind and return the stuff would pass. After I contacted the store, I got a mail that informed me about the situation, but if I replied with a statement I voided my right to return the books they would finalize the steps for the PDFs. Half an hour later, I had the pdfs downloaded to my computer
