David Johansen David Johansen Enjoyed Hugo, but it's the only Blu-Ray I've seen that pushes the data transfer rate to the player's limit. Lots of pauses and stutters are a common complaint.

A shame, because it's such a beautiful film.

Jetstream Jetstream There's a YouTuber called Foresty Forest who has several vids of driving to the Yukon Arctic Ocean coast in February-March of this year. Weather looks insane.

His vehicle of choice is an old Chevy van - just enough room to sleep, sit up and cook.

As I mentioned in the "what I'm listening to" thread, although it's quite rare for me to re-watch a series I've already seen, I've recently re-watched all 3 seasons of Wynonna Earp. That is one of my favorite shows. All about Wyatt Earp's great-great granddaughter and her highly dysfunctional team fighting supernatural evil in small-town Canada. There's non-stop clever dialogue, the actors do a great job playing characters who are very fun to watch, the whole idea is rather creative, IMO, and there are a lot of great songs used.

There are a couple of special effects fails, but most of the special effects are fine.

It's funny, from my first time watching the show, I didn't really remember the details of any of the supernatural shenanigans. The only thing I specifically remembered was the time Wynonna
called Waverly "half-sister,"
which, on the one hand, is just a statement of fact, but the way she said it made it sound like the worst possible thing you could say to a person.

She was under the influence of a demon at the time, so it's forgiveable
.

Oh, and I guess I also specifically remembered this :clown: :

They are making a fourth season, but had to halt production for now like so many other current things.

Binged Season 6 of Bosch with the wife. We both dig this modern take on the classic police procedural.

I stopped watching after series 11. It's not even any special aversion to the current Doctor or showrunner. I think the show has always been pretty hit or miss. I'm just burned out on Doctor Who as a whole at the moment. All shows wear out. Doctor Who has done better with longevity than most due to its ability switch out the cast, but I'm just a little tired of the whole concept.

It might win me back someday, but for now I need a long break.

Yeah, I'm probably the same. Fortunately, they only seem to make one series a year, so I'll probably watch the next one on Catchup when it has finished showing on normal TV. Bingeing is a better way to watch it, for me.

Anyway, finished Series 12. It was OK, but nothing special. A few episodes were quite good, but most were OK. Having different writers means there is little continuity, although that has never been a big thing on Doctor Who.

They made a lot of these Mad Max ripoffs in the early 80s and have loads of these films on Prime, I've watched an insane number although I don't think I could say a single one was actually good, unless you consider Cherry 2000 part of the genre, which I guess it is. I remember being surprised that it wasn't just terrible softporn.

Oh, I really liked Cherry 2000.

The villain is brilliant, from having a packed lunch made to nasty stings. I'll have to watch it again, sometime.

My most recent films have been Fast Color and Freaks. Freaks is similar to Code 8 in that people with powers are on the outs with society (in Freaks they're usually killed if caught). Also finally started to check out The Mandalorian, as my friend recorded the episodes for me (he has D+, I don't). Also been catching new episodes of Dark Side of the Ring when someone posts them to Youtube

We just watched Code 8 last night and it was a solid genre storyline with some sf and superhero trappings. I liked how they got the infodump for the world all done during the credits sequence.

I also watched Spookies on VOD from the Alamo Drafthouse who are hosting a different film every week online as part of their Terror Tuesdays series. It is a cheapjack 80s horror film ripping off Evil Dead, looking great in the latest Vinegar Syndrome restoration, patched together incoherently by different directors and producers with some suprisingly good monster fx. It's fun if you like bad films.

Watching Beyond, which is quite interesting, with engaging characters and a backstory slowly revealing itself.

Just watched the lovely From Up on Poppy Hill (Kokuriko-zaka Kara) on Netflix.

Revisited two 70s horror anthology films from when I was a kid. First up was The Monster Club which has a silly but fun framing device starring the legends Vincent Price and David Carradine in a literal monster club. The first story is pretty forgettable is okay, the second has a good ending but it is the third story featuring a village of ghouls that is particularly good. As a kid I didn't know any of the bands playing in the club between stories but now I realize they include the great 60s rock band The Pretty Things and strangely enough UB40. There is a PG rated strip scene that still burned itself into my young mind too.

Followed it up with The Uncanny, a French Canadian co-production about killer cats featuring Peter Cushing and Ray Milland in the framing story. This creeped me out as a kid even though I was and remain a big cat lover. It is pretty silly but aware of it and quite fun.

Got halfway through The Mandalorian. It's ok so far. Watched an episode of McGuyver and SWAT after that to take a break. I'm now sort of watching two movies: Monster Hunter, a Chinese kid friendly film involving the hunt for the egg of the Monster Queen's child by both humans and other monsters (the old king was deposed, so the new king wants the egg). It's got some decent action to it. I found a director's cut on The Roku Channel (it's from one of the Filmrise channels), so I assume that means the film is longer (since the run time seems longer than when the film was on Netflix). I'm currently watching Predestination, a low key sci-fi film starring Ethan Hawke. It involved Time Travel. I find Hawke is pretty good with these low budget sci-fi/horror films (I loved Gattaca, and thought Sinister was pretty good).

Predestination is quite good, it is an adaptation of Robert Heinlein's famous short story 'All You Zombies' which does a good job of expanding it to feature lemgth and has a cool retro-50s sf meets modernday look that is a good fit with the very 50s feel of Heinlein's best sf.

I finished watching it, and damn, what a mind fuck that was (in a good way). I actually think it was better than Gattaca, which I felt was an under rated film.

Oh yes. It's that rare beast where the books are top notch and the tv series takes them, adapts them and it's still superb.

Just finished The Spy on Netflix. It's a true story of an Israeli spy (Sacha Baron Cohen) who infiltrated the Syrian government in the 60s. It was pretty good, tense enough to have me rubbing my head in frustration at obvious risk taking and grounded enough to feel accurate(ish). It was maybe a little too short as a series (6 episodes) and felt rushed at times. Recommended though.

I finished Monster Hunt. It was good, but not great. It's more a kid's film, with the monsters designed to be cute looking (especially the one at the center of the story). I'll probably catch the sequel (which I saw was free on Tubi and Vudu) next weekend.

Just watched The Rite on Netflix. Not at all as bad as some reports made me expect. Not sure I would really rank this as a horror flick, though I guess there is plenty horror in it.

Just binged watched season 1 and 2 of HAPPY!

It was fantastic. If you have a pitch black sense of humour, a love of the absurd, and are a fann of Grant Morrison's The Invisibles, I highly recommend it

Plus, you will never be able to watch an episode of Law & Order:SVU the same again.

I ended up watching Tiger King.

I have not seen that film since I was a kid. Now I am curious if my memories match the movie

Watched Extraction, the new Netflix original film with Chris Hemsworth (and produced by the Russo Brothers). Really brutal fight scenes spice up this typical story of a merc who has pretty much given up on life who is part of a team hired to rescue the son of a drug lord from Mumbai. They used single hand cams on a lot of the running battles. Hemsworth isn't his typical smiling self. He's reserved and somewhat brooding (why is revealed about halfway into the movie), and his character admits he's no hero. For what it was, it was pretty well done.

I also watched documentary called Netflix vs the World, which is of course about Netflix. What's interesting is the documentary covers a lot of the Blockbuster/Netflix rivalry, and features interviews with people from Blockbuster. At least half of the documentary features this. It's really good, and shows how close Blockbuster came to putting Netflix out of business if not for Carl Icahn being the douche that he is. One thing I found interesting was that one of the higher ups at Blockbuster was considering digital options before Netflix seemingly did. Things might have been very different if not for some bad moves on their part (plus Icahn's meddling really sped up their demise). I highly recommend this one

Finished the Mandalorian, then watched another Netflix original film, Close. It was kind of standard, then they did a swerve so that what you thought was going on wasn't. Like Extraction, it involves someone with military training protecting someone younger (in this case, a female contractor protecting an heiress from kidnappers and corrupt police in Morocco). Extraction was better (to me), but Close was grittier. The fights are more brutal, as more than once a character is in dire straights and barely wins.

Watched The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, directed and starring Tommy Lee Jones who is excellent as always with a very good cast. A modern Western with a slow burn and minimalist style, I really enjoy these kind of films and they make me think of the idea of a 'modern Western' rpg (other examples would be Hell or High Water and No Country for Old Men).

Finished beyond and it looks like it's angling for a new Series.

Just watches Series 3 of the Last Kingdom and watching Series 4, am enjoying it immensely.

I'm laughing out loud because that's a movie my wife and I rented way back when on a recommendation and about 45 minutes into it I asked her, "Are you enjoying this?" and she replied, "No, I was only watching because you were," to which I said, "No, I was only watching because I thought you were liking it." One of very few films we've ever turned off midway through. I also hate Tommy Lee Jones as an actor. :hehe:

We watched three films on Netflix which I heartily recommend:

Whisper of the Heart (Mimi o Sumaseba). The characters Muta and The Baron also appear in The Cat Returns.

Muta AKA Moon

Moonlight A beautiful coming-of-age drama with solid acting.

Errementari, a really fun Basque-language horror fairytale.

We also watched Resident Evil: Retribution which I'd only recommend if you know what you're getting into.

Rewatched Fallen Angel on TCM, a gem of a noir by Preminger with the great Dana Andrews, Alice Faye and Linda Darnell. Some classic dialogue in this one.

Also watched the excellent The Perfume of the Lady in Black on Prime, an unusual Italian giallo starring Mimsy Farmer, this is less of a proto-slasher and closer to a horror thriller in the mode of Rosemary's Baby and Altman's Images.

Only available on Prime in the English dub but that is fine as most of the actors were English speaking so you're better off hearing Farmer's performance that way.
